iPAQ h6300

Let me start off by saying that it’s not April Fools day – not for another day.

T-Mobile has released the much anticipated ROM update for the iPAQ h6315. The update promises improved overall stability, improved Bluetooth performance, improved voice quality, improved e-mail performance and other general improvements.

Let’s hope that this ROM update is what users have been looking for for so long.

Note: If your ROM Revision is 1.10.08 ENG or higher you should NOT install the new software version. I assume that this ROM is in fact version 1.10.08 ENG.

On the heels of the announcement that T-Mobile had released an updated ROM for the HP iPAQ 6315, it has resumed sales of the device. As of today, it is once again showing up on their site (with a link to the system upgrade on the left).

Does this mean that T-Mobile is confident that the new ROM has addressed most (if not all) of the customer complaints that had caused it to stop sales in the first place? Only time will tell.

HP m7000 Media PC

HP has introduced the Media Center m7000 desktop PC which is the first to come with the ability to dock your iPod. It’s not a full dock but rather a piece of molded plastic that will fit around Apple’s own dock. Together, the two allow your iPod to sit on the top of your PC.

In conjunction with this announcement came news that HP is planning to release new iPods in the upcoming weeks. “Expect us to have, like we did with the original products, a very similar lineup to what Apple has,” said Siobhan O’Connor, HP’s vice president of consumer brand and marketing.

Less than two months after it ousted Carly Fiorina, HP has chosen its new CEO: Mark Hurd, currently NCR chief executive. Hurd is expected to start his new job next month and he will serve as both president and chief executive withPatricia Dunn retaining the chairwoman title.

NCR is a much smaller company than HP with $5.98 billion in revenues last year. But Hurd apparently tackled on many of the same issues facing HP today when he took over the reins at NCR and became CEO in March 2003.

HP iPAQ rx3700 Series Mobile Media Companion ROM Update

Mar 292005

HP has posted another updated ROM for the iPAQ rx3700 Series Mobile Media Companion. This one offers:

  • Resolves Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer shutdown issue
  • Adds Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 Mobile for Pocket PC
  • Updates ROM to Bluetooth driver build 2600
  • Updates ROM to iPAQ Mobile Media version 2.0.1.87
  • Connectivity: Enables a Bluetooth phone to dial a contact
  • Supports Nevo Media, which is compatible with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile

Which leaves me with the question: What is different between this ROM and the one issued back in December (Version 1.01.10 dated 20 Dec 04)?

As always, make sure you read all the instructions and prerequesites (ROM version 1.00.09 must be installed on the handheld before this update can be installed) before attempting to flash your ROM.

Chef Homaru Cantu (head chef at the Moto restaurant in Chicago) cooks with inkjet printers! The inks are organic (fruit and vegetable mixtures) and the papers are made of corn starch and soybean. First he prints an image of some food and then he will rub spices and flavourings on the back to produce the appropriate “dish”. The sheets can then be and then be fried, frozen or baked.

Before you shake your head and think that he’s crazy, keep in mind that his customers will shell out about $240 (per person) for a 20-course meal.

And Cantu is not done: Read the article for more of his radical cooking ideas.

A closer look at Google Mobile Search

Google Mobile Search

If you recently visited Google on your PocketPC or smartphone, you probably ended up on a page somewhat different then what you expected. Google has begun to point mobile devices to a WML gateway.

Is Google Mobile Search is a good thing or not, asks the article. What made them ask this question: Google Mobile passes the sites you visit via their mobile search through a proxy. This is important because it converts and strips down the page’s source into something more easily digestible by devices with limited bandwidth and limited processing power. It doesn’t sound so bad until you realize that this means that Google is modifying the pages that you are browsing. Most may not mind as it speeds up the download process but what if it’s your content that is being cut up or your graphics and ads that are being stripped out?

WiFi iPod

Business 2.0 looks at what might be next for Apple now that it has revolutionized the music industry. The sizzle is in what Apple comes up with to turbocharge the iPod – or to create entirely new devices so irresistible that, iPod-like, they’ll blast open vast new markets. Analyzing that requires some speculation, of course.

Accompanying the article is a photoessay in which Business 2.0 commissioned design firm Pentagram to design some Apple products that I think all of us would like to see in the near future. So what did Pentagram come up with? Check out the photoessay that accompanies the article but here’s a sample: a wireless iPod (article image) and a vPod (a combination digital image/iPod device featuring a camera for still photos and video).
