HTC

If we all scream loud enough long enough, maybe Microsoft still won’t listen but HTC lools like they will. According to MoDaCo, HTC will add a close button that really closes and not just minimizes applications to its devices.

Starting with AKU 3.2, HTC devices will have the ability to use the X button in the same way that it works in other Microsoft operating systems. Users will have the option of choosing to either use a simple tap or a tap-and-hold gesture to do so.

Way to go HTC!

No Zune in the UK until 2008?

Zune

Microsoft’s plans to have the Zune take over the world will take some time if the latest rumours are true. It looks like the Zune will not launch in the UK until late 2007 or early 2008 according to Microsoft media and entertainment alliance manager Dene Schonknecht. The delay appears to be due to the fact that Microsoft does not have a music store provider for the Zune Marketplace in the UK. If this is true, the Zune will hit the UK over a year after it hit US shores.

It looks like Steve Jobs may have one more reason not to be worried about the latest iPod competitor.

Glyn Evans of Pocket PC Solutions has developed a prototype keyboard that also acts as a case for a UMPC device. Imagine that you pull your UMPC out of this case, connect it to the said case and start typing away. The keyboard makes audible clicks you press keys. The prototype was built using technology from Eleksen, the company that came up with flexible fabric keyboards.

Pictures show the UMPC in the case and then with the case acting as the keyboard.

This prototype clearly shows that fabric keyboards may be one solution that combine light weight and small size with all the advantages of full size keyboards.

More Apple interface patents

Posted by  Comments Off on More Apple interface patents
Oct 272006

Apple has filed another interface patent. The latest one, called “Electronic Device Having Display and Surrounding Touch Sensitive Bezel for User Interface and Control” is for a touch-sensitive bezel (the frame around the screen) that would let users first select a control and then use a scrolling control (for example, at the bottom of the bezel) to adjust the setting selected. The ‘More information’ link features many more pictures that illustrate how this would work.

Earlier Apple patents focused on using a touchscreen as the control. Many feared that this would lead to smudges and scratches on screens. By moving the controls to the edges of the screen, Apple may have found a way to address this concern.

You can read more about the patent application here.

Nokia to unveil more Internet Tablets?

Posted by  Comments Off on Nokia to unveil more Internet Tablets?
Oct 262006

Rumours and a picture of a replacement for the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet has surfaced. A picture of the Nokia 870 (the name is not confirmed either) was posted over at Internet Tablet Talk. Details are still sketchy but it should come with a webcam (that protrudes from the left side) and additional VOIP functions. So far, no news on whether the new tablet would come with updated hardware or software.

This rumour follows on the heels of another Nokia Internet Tablet rumour. If the 870 is the big brother, the Nokia 330 could be the younger sibling. It is apparently smaller than the 770 and its main capabilities would focus around media playback (including DivX playback), GPS navigation and audio playback. It would sport a 3.5-inch screen.
