Marvell announces new XScale processors

Nov 302006

Marvell (which took over Intel’s cellular and application processor division) has announced new processors in its XScale line of processors. The PXA3xx family (codename Monahans during development) will come with 3 processors. The PXA3xx family of processors delivers improved performance and extended battery life, enabling advanced video and audio capabilities. Wireless Intel SpeedStep with MusicMax technology provides intelligent power management, enabling varying power states so users can listen up to 30 hours of MP3s on their handsets without sacrificing battery life. Intel VideoMax technology in the PXA3xx family of application processors supports high-performance video capabilities, and will continue delivering improved resolution with future versions of the PXA3xx family of processors.

The PXA320 is currently offered as a 806MHz processor (although it was demonstrated to run at 1.2GHz). We can expect to see devices running the PXA320 in the first quarter of 2007.

The PXA300 offers performance and cost optimization. Basically, this is the entry level processor.

The PXA310 is focused on multimedia performance and supports high-resolution VGA multimedia (30fps H.264 playback).

2007 promises to be interesting: New processors and Crossbow from Microsoft. I expect we will see a few new devices!

Split Cam

If trying to merge a couple of pictures into one using Photoshop is not for you, perhaps the Split Cam will be. Sure you have to step back into the world of 35mm film but this camera lets you morph two pictures together without much effort. The camera comes with lens-blocking sliders and viewfinder cross hairs that will let you line up to pictures and combine them into one. Two pictures later, you will have your head on the body of your dog.

Unfortunately, the camera does not come with a flash so it is likely not to work too well in low light conditions. As long as you stick to sunny days and a faster film, much hilarity should be the result.

The camera is available for about $13 USD.

Wal-Mart launches movie downloads

Nov 282006

Wal-Mart has entered the world of movie downloads, albeit with a slightly different approach than other such services. The program is launching in a beta mode and offering only Superman Returns at first. Customers purchasing a DVD copy of the movie will be offered the possibility of downloading a digital copy for an additional fee. For $1.97 USD, customers will be able to download the movie to a portable device, for $2.97 USD to a PC and for $3.97 USD to both a portable device and a PC. This approach is meant to protect Wal-Mart from cannibalizing its own DVD sales.

Wal-Mart plans to expand its service to include other DVD movies as well as standalone movies and TV shows in the next few months.

Downloads will be in the Windows Media Player format (XP and Windows Media Player 10 required on computers), thereby excluding Apple Mac and iPod users as well as Linux devices.

Pink Zunes out in the wild

Not only did Microsoft reward some people who worked on the Zune project with pink and orange Zunes but some 100 of the pink ones are also out in stores for some lucky souls to find. Lucky only if when they open the box to find a pink Zune rather than the colour that they had picked out. With your limited edition Zune, they’ll get a certificate indicating that it is a limited edition.

Apparently, if you want to avoid bringing home the pink Zune, check the fine print on the bottom of the box. On the other hand, if you want one, check out eBay as some have already gone on sale.

To Microsoft, of all the limited edition colours you could have picked, why pink? I’m not sure that the colour appeals to a wide demographic.
