Second generation Zunes spotted?

Our friends over at Gizmodo have landed pictures of what could be the rumoured Zune 2 and Zune Flash. Or as they suggest themselves, it could all be part of a diversion.

Rumoured 2G Zunes

If we assume for a second that these marketing materials are real, then it looks like the Zune Flash will come in either 4GB or 8GB capacity and in black, red, pink or green. The Zune 2 will sport an upgraded capacity of 80GB and will come only in black. Both sport a new controller and Gizmodo suggest that it could be touch-sensitive.

If these are not in fact decoys, I would say that Microsoft has once again missed an opportunity to make a bigger splash with its second generation Zune players (unless the software proves to be that leap ahead). If next week’s Apple event delivers half of what the rumours promise, the Zune risks becoming another victim of Apple’s innovation and success in this space.

Rumours swirling that Microsoft wants to buy RIM

Posted by  Comments Off on Rumours swirling that Microsoft wants to buy RIM
Aug 302007

Rumours are once again swirling that Research in Motion is about to be snapped up. This time the buyer would be Microsoft. While Microsoft does have a fair amount of money sitting in its bank accounts, RIM would not be a cheap purchase. RIM is currently valued at US$46.8 billion (compared to Microsoft’s market capitalization of US$266.5 billion).

One interesting bit of speculation suggests that Microsoft could be eyeing this purchase in response to recent rumours that Google could be moving into the mobile phone operating system and hardware business.

While RIM stock shot up just over one percent on the rumours, many analysts suggest that the rumour might be no more than that. Maybe the next few days will tell us more…

Sony to shut down Connect music store

Posted by  Comments Off on Sony to shut down Connect music store
Aug 302007

Sony announced today that it plans to close down its Connect online music store in early 2008. Sony will also stop supporting its ATRAC format.

The Sony Connect store faced challenges right from its launch. The Connect software was so buggy that Sony even recommended that customers use the older SonicStage software at one point. Development on the software then stopped in April 2006.

Sony recommends that Connect customers archive their music libraries to audio CDs because ATRAC content will not be transferable to new computers after the shutdown. They also recommend that customers use up any promotional codes before March 2008.

With the demise of ATRAC, Sony’s future digital audio players will support Windows Media, MP3 and AAC files.

Add another rumour for next week’s Apple event. AppleInsider is reporting that the iPod shuffle could be next in line to join or replace the existing nanos as (PRODUCT) RED products.

(RED) is a private company that fights AIDS in Africa using funds raised by partnering with worldwide companies who contribute a portion of sales of unique (PRODUCT) RED.

Aside from this move, not much else is expected for the shuffle which was updated last fall. If an update is offered, it would likely come in the shape of increased capacity, lower price or new software features.

Nokia N81

At a major press event today, Nokia unveiled a number of new devices and services. On the device side, it announced the Nokia N81 and Nokia N81 8GB, the Nokia N95 8GB and the Nokia 5310 and 5610 XpressMusic handsets.

The Nokia N81 and N81 8GB version support the relaunched N-Gage gaming platform and pack quad-band GSM and single-band HSDPA (no US band support). They come with dedicated music and gaming keys, a 2.4-inch display, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, a 2MP camera, and a microSD slot. As the name implies, the N81 8GB comes with 8GB of Flash memory.

The N95 8GB is very similar to the already available N95 but adds 8GB of Flash memory and a larger 2.8-inch display.

Both the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic and S610 XpressMusic are focused on music playing. The S310 is a thin (9.9mm) candybar that packs a 2-inch QVGA display, a 2MP camera, and a microSD slot (up to 4GB supported). The S610 is a slider featuring a 2.2-inch display, 3G support, a 3.2MP camera, and a microSD slot (up to 4GB supported).

All phones should start shipping in the fourth quarter.

Nokia also announced the launch of its Nokia Music Store which will offer music from major artists, independent labels and local hits. Offering both download and streaming service, a single user account promises to let users access the store from both computers and optimized Nokia devices (like the new N81 or N95 8GB). It will support features like over-the-air purchases, music browsing and searching, recommendations and wishlists. Songs purchased will be transferable to a PC or from a PC to compatible Nokia devices like the 5310 and 5610 XpressMusic devices.

Music tracks will be offered in 192Kbps audio in Windows Media Audio (WMA) format and will cost €1 each (€10 for albums).

The Nokia Music Store will launch across Europe and Asia over the next few months.

Google Phone confirmed by HTC insider?

Aug 282007

Crunchgear is reporting that an HTC insider has confirmed that the much-rumoured Google phone (rumours go back as far as late 2006) will launch in early 2008. Google is looking at some 20 HTC designs before deciding on which will become the final product.

The source indicates that there will be a special version of Google Maps that will work with integrated GPS, compatibility with Google applications like Gmail, and that it will support VoIP through Google Talk (so the phone will also support Wi-Fi). There is even a chance that Google could use Windows Mobile 6 as the OS but a Linux-based OS is more likely.

Not soon enough for you? The Business Standard, an Indian business daily, is reporting that in fact, Google will announce its gPhone as early as two weeks from now. It will be launched worldwide simultaneously (FCC approval expected shortly).

Let the frenzy begin anew!
