Microsoft Office Mobile

Microsoft has released a new version of Office Mobile. Version 6.1 comes with a number of improvements: Compatibility with Microsoft Office 2007 which introduced the new Open XML file formats, the ability to create rich charts in Excel Mobile, the use of SmartArt and Themes in PowerPoint Mobile and the ability to view the contents of compressed (zipped) folders using Zip Mobile.

The update is not a ROM upgrade and will require that you install it to main memory or to your storage card.

The latest version of Office Mobile is available for Windows Mobile 5.0 (with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack – look for a build number higher than 14847) and Windows Mobile 6. Best of all, the upgrade is free if you already have Office Mobile on your device.

Announcing the newest Gadgetorama Editor-in-training

Nov 302007

My apologies for the lack of news but the newest Gadgetorama Editor-in-training was born at 1552 Tuesday afternoon, about three weeks ahead of schedule (forcing everyone into scramble mode). Everything went well and both Mommy and he are both doing well. Christian, the other Gadgetorama Editor-in-training and now older brother, greeted Noah’s arrival with excitement and lots of jumping around.

While all this was happening, I was still trying to get over the jet lag from my trip halfway across the world and fighting off a nasty cold that I must have picked up on the flight back. It’s been a long but exciting week.

News coverage will resume shortly but probably at a bit slower pace at first as the household gets used to juggling an excitable 3-year old and the demands of a new born!

OQO is set to unveil something called the Anytime/ Anywhere Computing Environment at a press event set for December 3rd in London, England. Details are slim for this exclusive pre-launch unveilingbut James Kendrick over at jkOnTheRun received an invitation and expects that a completely new product will be announced.

The event will be attended by OQO CEO Dennis Moore, lending support to the idea that it could be more than just simple updates to existing devices. But Moore has already indicated that we should not expect a model 03 but rather something that we think will be important particularly to the European market.

Could OQO be about to announce a HSDPA-enabled device, model 02 (or E2 as it is known in Europe) or otherwise? We will know early next week.

Apple iPhone

In order to comply with an injunction brought on by rival Vodafone, T-Mobile has begun to sell unlocked iPhones in Germany. But it will not be cheap. Whereas an iPhone with two-year contract sells for €399, an unlocked one sells for €999 (about USD$1475).

The injunction filed by Vodafone alleges that the sale of iPhones that cannot work on rival networks is a breach of German laws.

T-Mobile will also allow customers who bought locked phones to have them unlocked. If so, this would mark the first time that a legitimate way to unlock phones is available to customers.

Bell announces HTC Touch with $7 unlimited data plan

Nov 162007

The rumours last week about Bell introducing a new CAD$7 data plan with the HTC Touch have been confirmed. Bell today launched the HTC Touch smartphone, offering clients the ability to add unlimited access to the Internet and email for just $7 a month.

With Bell Mobility’s mobile browser feature, clients can add unlimited access to the Internet and email to their HTC Touch for just $7 per month. They can visit popular Web sites like Facebook, chat with friends on Windows Live Messenger, or access email accounts (including Windows Live Hotmail, Sympatico, Google Mail and Yahoo! Mail) without additional charges.

Pricing information reported earlier was a bit off though. Without a contract, the Touch will sell for CAD$399.95. This falls to CAD$149.95 with a three year plan.

I hope that this marks the arrival of more reasonable wireless data plans in Canada from all players in the market. If not, I may be switching over to Bell sooner than later!

China Unicom also interested in Apple iPhone

Posted by  Comments Off on China Unicom also interested in Apple iPhone
Nov 142007

Apple iPhone

Only yesterday, there were hints that the iPhone could be headed to China with China Mobile. Now rival China Unicom has expressed a similar interest. One of their executives, Executive Director Li Zhengmao, is quoted as saying, “But of course, we’re always willing to discuss a good business opportunity if it presents itself. As for whether we’ll talk about iPhones with Apple, you’ll have to ask Apple.”

With China Mobile already expressing concerns about subscription revenue sharing, having another player express interest may well play into Apple’s hands. China Unicom is about half the size of China Mobile (156 million subscribers compared to over 350 million) and it may be willing to make more concessions in order to carry the iPhone and use it to close the gap with their competitor.

The price of the iPhone may also play into all this. At USD$399, it costs more than what the average Chinese earns in a month. If so, the iPhone could find itself limited to an elite audience.

One thing is clear: Negotiations are just getting started so an announcement may still be a ways off. Another concern is the price of the iPhone. The average Chinese earns less in a month than the price of the iPhone (USD$399) so the iPhone could well end up as a luxury item available to few.

The N82 is powered by the Symbian operating system. It comes with a 5MP camera with Xenon flash, a 10x digital zoom and Carl Zeiss optics, assisted GPS (A-GPS), up to 100MB of internal memory, a 2.4-inch QVGA display with automatic screen rotation, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP Stereo audio, FM tuner, and a microSD expansion slot. The Nokia N82 is available now for €450 in what Nokia calls “key markets” (Europe).
