Garmin nuviphone gets priced?

Garmin nuviphone

Garmin is apparently trying to find out just how much customers would spend for their upcoming nüvifone. One pricing scheme was proposed in a recent Garmin survey:

Now, how likely would you be to buy the Garmin nüvifone (for yourself or as a gift) if offered by AT&T for $499.99 with a two year contract? You would be required to have both a data plan that would include unlimited Internet browsing and unlimited Navigation for $19.99 per month and one of the standard voice rate plans for a monthly fee.

If Garmin goes with the USD$499.99 price point, it would make the nüvifone more expensive than the iPhone. It seems pretty expensive for the debut phone from a company just entering the handset market but just remember how well the iPhone did on its expensive debut.

So far, we know that the nüvifone will come with a 3.5-inch touchscreen display, 3.5G connectivity (specific bands not disclosed although the survey does suggest North American bands will be supported if it comes to AT&T), built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, and a digital camera. It will run on Garmin’s own operating system. On the software side, it will have a web browser, email and IM clients, Google local search, a media player and a number of preloaded maps.

The Garmin nüvifone should be available in the third quarter of 2008. Pricing information was not announced.

Intel confirms Atom shortages

Intel

Intel has confirmed earlier rumours that demand for its Atom processor and chipset is outstripping supply. Bill Calder, an Intel spokesman, said “We are working closely with our customers to meet their needs.”

During a call for first quarter financial results, Asustek CEO Jerry Shen said that he sees the shortage continuing into the third quarter of the year. This bodes well for ASUS which currently uses an Intel Celeron processor in its Eee PC line and for other manufacturers such as HP who are using VIA processors in their low-cost notebooks. It might also give AMD and VIA an opportunity to push their forthcoming Puma and Isaiah processors to manufacturers affected by the Atom shortages.

May 012008

Did you know that May 1st is RSS Day as declared by the folks behind Daily Blog Tips? What is RSS, you ask?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to deliver information from websites and pages that get updated regularly. An RSS document (which is called feed) contains either a summary or the full content from a website.

The main benefit of RSS is that it enables people to stay connected with their favorite websites without having to visit them. Once you subscribe to a particular RSS feed, you will automatically receive updates from the website that publishes the feed, whenever they release new content.

If you want more information about RSS, check out the RSS Day web site for a thorough explanation, including a video.

And if you have not already done so, why not add the Gadgetorama RSS feed to your list of favourite RSS feeds?

What is the next move for Microsoft after Yahoo deadline passes?

The deadline imposed by Microsoft for Yahoo! to come to the bargaining table has passed. Microsoft is mulling its next move in its proposed USD$44.6 billion takeover and could make it as early as this week. A number of options are thought to be on the table.

One option on the table is to try to replace the Yahoo board of directors with its own. A second option would be to go directly to the Yahoo! shareholders with a hostile acquisition offer. Microsoft is also apparently considering simply pulling their bid and continuing to compete alone against Yahoo! and Google in the online advertising space.

I have a funny feeling we are far from the end of this saga.
