TELUS Mobility

TELUS has clarified the terms of the iPad data plan it announced on Saturday by adding a 5GB cap. When first announced, TELUS’ only iPad plan offered 500MB for CA$20 with additional data to be charged at CA$0.05 per MB up to a maximum of $30.

With no mention of any cap, TELUS was essentially offering an unlimited data plan for CA$50 per month. TELUS has now clarified the terms of the plan and added that “maximum allowed data usage per month will be 5GB.”

The TELUS plan has lost much of its appeal with the imposing of the cap but, unlike the Bell and Rogers plans, it is available post paid (with a CA$35 activation fee) and allows for overage. It also offers an additional 250MB for CA$5 when compared to the cheaper Bell and Rogers data plans (250MB per month for CA$15)

HTC Desire

It appears that TELUS may have changed its mind about rebranding the HTC Desire as the HTC Triumph. A new TELUS inventory system screenshot obtained by MobileSyrup.com now shows the HTC Desire, suggesting that the carrier may have decided against rebranding what so far appears to be none other than the HTC Desire.

A July release date still appears to be in the cards. If so, TELUS would launch the HTC Desire with Android 2.1 and release an update to Android 2.2 a bit later.

Will Telus save the HTC Triumph name for another device? We’ll have to see…

Lenovo Skylight

Back at CES 2010, Lenovo unveiled the Skylight smartbook, promising to launch it in April. April came and went and there was no Skylight. Now comes word that Lenovo has delayed (canceled?) the device to make changes to the OS that will power it. Rather than a proprietary Linux based OS, Lenovo is likely to use Google Android (or Google Chrome maybe?).

“After careful consideration of market conditions and user feedback, Lenovo has decided to focus its resources on building a family of next-generation mobile internet devices based upon open technologies such as (but not limited to) the Android kernel, similar to the Lenovo smartphone, which is available for sale in China now.

As a result of Lenovo’s strategic shift towards open standards such as an Android kernel based environment, the Company has shelved its plans to release the initial version of the Skylight smartbook that featured a proprietary Linux based OS.”

Lenovo provided no indication as to when the Skylight could resurface.

ASUS Eee Pad EP 121

As Computex is set to kick off, ASUS announced it is jumping into the tablet device arena with the Eee Pad. In fact, it plans to offer two models. Unfortunately, neither will ship until early 2011.

Engineering excellence meets stunning design in the ASUS Eee Pad, an ultra-slim and light yet high-performance slate device designed to provide users with a real time cloud computing experience.

The EP121 Eee Pad will be powered by an Intel CULV Core 2 Duo processor and Windows 7 Home Premium. It will come with a 12-inch multi-touch display, a webcam, USB port, and a keyboard dock.

The EP101TC will be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra chipset and Windows Embedded Compact 7 with a customized UI. It will come with a 10-inch display. It should be about 12mm thick and weigh about 675 grams.

Both promise about 10 hours of battery life.

While final pricing has yet to be determined, ASUS expects it to fall in the range of US$399 (EP101TC) to US$499 (EP121).

ASUS is also working on its own app store. No timelines were given as to when it could go live.

Amazon to unveil thinner Kindle this August?

Bloomberg is reporting that Amazon could unveil its next generation Kindle e-reader later this summer. While the new device will sport a more responsive and sharper resolution display, it will not come with a colour screen or support for touch, according to Bloomberg’s sources.

This is not to say that colour and multi-touch will not ever make their way onto the Kindle. Both are being looked at by Lab126, Amazon’s division responsible for designing the Kindle. Prototypes are apparently already running but it remains to be seen when consumers will see such Kindles.

Earlier this week, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos indicated that the Kindle will remain focused on long-form reading rather than evolving into a multi-purpose device such as the Apple iPad.

Amazon launched its first Kindle back in 2006.

Rogers Wireless has confirmed via Twitter that Google Android 2.1 updates are on their way for two of its current smartphones.

@DGfromMTL I just confirmed that HTC will deliver 2.1 for Magic for testing end of June. Acer Liquid will release w/ 2.1. X10 2.1 in Fall.

What is not so clear is how long Rogers will need to test the HTC Magic update before releasing it to its users. It might only be sometime later this summer. Meanwhile, the XPERIA X10 update is expected possibly as late as November.

The tweet also confirms that the Acer Liquid e will have Android 2.1 loaded when it launches. This was pretty much guaranteed given that Acer has already announced that the North American version of the Acer the Liquid e would come with Android 2.1.
