TELUS delays Android 2.2 update for HTC Desire

With October just about over as I write this, it should come as no surprise that TELUS will now have to come up with a new target date for the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire. TELUS Support has hinted via Twitter that it will be soon without giving a more specific timeframe:

We got word that Android 2.2 has been pushed back and will be out in the near future in Q4

I just hope that HTC Desire owners don’t have to wait as long as HTC Hero owners did for the Android 2.1 update

If a leaked WIND Mobile inventory system screenshot is to be believed, the carrier is getting ready to launch the BlackBerry Curve 3G (also known as the Curve 9300). The two entries suggest that WIND Mobile could offer it two different colours.

Pricing and availability details are not yet known. Look for a release before the holidays for a price in the CA$350 range.

Samsung Canada launches Samsung Galaxy Series with Faber Drive concert

Oct 302010

Samsung Canada earlier this week introduced a number of new devices, the Galaxy S Captivate, the Galaxy Tab, and the Windows Phone 7 Samsung Focus, with a concert featuring Canadian band Faber Drive.

Once in, I expected to find the new devices available for us to play with or on display at least. None were in sight (or were they hidden away in the VIP area?). While I waited for the devices to make an appearance, I caught up with a few familiar faces.

An hour went by before Raj Doshi, Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Rogers Communications and Paul Brannen, Vice President at Samsung Mobile Canada, took to the stage to say a few words. Sadly, there was no information about release dates but there was a promise that devices were being shown off by staff in white. I looked around and did not see any.

By the time Faber Drive hit the stage, there was still precious little evidence of any of the devices. I finally noticed one or two Captivates (or perhaps Vibrants as it was quite dark and difficult to tell) but many more BlackBerry devices. And finally some Tabs started showing up in the crowd.

I ended up spending a few minutes with one but conversation with the Samsung rep was difficult as Faber Drive was playing only feet away. My first impression was that the Tab felt like an oversized smartphone. It was odd at first to see a smartphone OS on a larger device but I liked the familiarity that it brought. The Tab’s performance was pretty and applications seemed to scale well to the higher display resolution (but I only tried a few).

Unfortunately, the Canadian version will only support data plans and no voice plans. There is hope though (if I heard correctly): Samsung Canada could release an update to enable voice services should Canadian carriers express such an interest.

While Samsung definitely knows how to throw a party (remember the Metric show this past summer?), I wish that they would give a bit more attention to their devices. Here are a few pictures of the event:

Fortune ‘confirms’ iPhone headed to Verizon

Apple iPhone 4

Fortune is the latest to throw its weight behind rumours that the Apple iPhone is headed to Verizon in early 2011. In an article that focuses on Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, it states: “Fortune has confirmed that a Verizon iPhone will be released in early 2011.” Strong words, I say.

Verizon began to sell the Apple iPad earlier this week, a move hinting at closer relations between the two companies.

Market analysts think that Verizon could sell up to 9 million iPhones in 2011 alone. In comparison, some 22 million have been sold in the US so far. Would either company want to pass up such an opportunity?

There is no word on specific availability. An announcement could come at CES 2011 especially given that Seidenberg is expected to deliver a keynote at the event.

T-Mobile to offer 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab with Windows 7?

Posted by  Comments Off on T-Mobile to offer 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab with Windows 7?
Oct 292010

Earlier this week, T-Mobile announced the release date and pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Available starting on November 10th, it will sell for US$399.99 with a two-year contract (pricing in line with that of Sprint). Data plans will include T-Mobile’s monthly 5GB or 200MB webConnect mobile broadband plans as well as some new prepaid plans.

T-Mobile has now published the specifications of the tablet and there are a few surprises: 10-inch display, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor N450, 160GB hard drive, and Windows 7. Don’t get all excited: It is more likely to be a content snafu than a mysterious new Galaxy Tab model. Both the Overview and Features tab features the more usual 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet we are all expecting.

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab specifications?

Anyone out there wishing this was for real?

Samsung to announce Google Nexus two at November 8th event?

Remember that November 8thevent where Samsung plans to unveil a new device? According to sources, the device in question could be none other than the Google Nexus Two.

The sources also reveal that the Google Nexus Two would be the first device to ship with stock Gingerbread (Android 2.3?) and that it would be offered by multiple carriers across the world. Instead of being available only directly from Google, this new device would be available through more conventional channels (much as Google later did with the Nexus One).

A separate report suggests that the Nexus Two will be available exclusively through Carphone Warehouse in the UK. The event in New York suggests that at least one US carrier could also offer it. Interestingly, the same report suggests that Samsung will not be the manufacturer behind the Nexus Two (neither will it be HTC).

The saga of the white iPhone 4 continues. Apple yesterday confirmed that it was delaying the white version of the iPhone 4 to 2011 without providing an explanation.

“We’re sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller.

The story took another turn today with BGR reporting that Apple may have now decided not to release white iPhone 4 at all. Instead, Apple will simply continue to delay it until it announces the iPhone 5 (next June/July?).

Is anyone out there still holding out for a white iPhone 4?

HP preparing up to six webOS devices for next year?

A report from the China Economic News Service suggests that HP could release up to six webOS devices in 2011. Foxconn could supply four or five of these devices, including the upcoming PalmPad, with Compal to provide one additional device.

No details were given about the devices themselves. I suspect that between CDMA and GSM variants, we could actually only see 3 or 4 new devices (the PalmPad, successors for the Pre 2 and Pixi and perhaps one new form factor perhaps with no physical keyboard).

HP acquired Palm earlier this year and promised to invest more in R&D. It appears that we could soon see the results of this promise.
