Amazon Kindle 3G

AT&T today announced that it will begin to sell the Amazon Kindle 3G at its company-owned stores starting on March 6th.

“Amazon has without question pioneered the eReader space with Kindle, and it’s exciting to not only connect this device through our network, but now offer it in our stores to readers around the country,” said Glenn Lurie, president, emerging devices, AT&T. “As the first dedicated eReader offered in our stores, we are confident the Kindle will be an attractive addition to our in store connected devices lineup.”

AT&T will offer the Kindle 3G for US$189, the same price as on Amazon’s website. Not surprisingly, it will not sell the Wi-Fi only version.

Rumours that Samsung will add a third tablet to its Galaxy Tab lineup gained credence today with a teaser for CTIA. Little is revealed but the announcement will focus on the Tab.

March 2011 Samsung event

The poster features the mysterious numbers 78910 under the tagline “What’s your Tab life?” With Samsung already having a 7- and a 10-inch model, removing those numbers from the sequence leaves 89 which could be a reference to the rumoured 8.9-inch display the new tablet will sport. The graphic also sports a honeycomb pattern in the bottom right corner, a likely reference to Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb).

Look for an announcement at CTIA on March 22nd.

Motorola XOOM 4G LTE upgrade details

Motorola XOOM

Along with the release of the Motorola XOOM earlier this week, Verizon outlined the details of the upcoming LTE upgrade program. It should be available about three months from now (towards the end of May) and will be completely free.

4G LTE is the next generation of wireless. It will provide network speeds that are up to 10 times faster than 3G when you’re within the 4G LTE coverage area. Verizon’s 4G LTE network is the fastest, most advanced 4G network in America. Maximize the experience on your Motorola Xoom with 4G LTE – download songs in seconds and movies in minutes and video chat live using Google Talk without any network interruptions.

Unfortunately, the upgrade will require that customers ship their XOOM tablet back to Motorola for the upgrade. The process is expected to take approximately six business days from shipment time.

One consolation is that customers will not need to change their plans once the 4G LTE upgrade is complete.

The offer of the free upgrade will be valid for six months from the initial availability date.

HTC

An HTC spokesperson has apparently confirmed to Slashgear.com that the HTC Desire, Desire HD, Desire Z, and Incredible S will all be updated to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) in Q2 2011. All of these devices are currently on Android 2.2.

The news should come as a relief to the older HTC Desire and Desire Z owners who may have thought that there would be no further updates for their devices. At the other end of the spectrum is the HTC Incredible S which was announced only last week yet will still come with Froyo rather than Gingerbread.

Let’s hope that the carriers are able to quickly turn these updates around and allow their customers to update in a reasonable amount of time.

Apple

Over the past few months, rumours have suggested new feature such as a higher resolution display, an SD card slot, a USB port, and both front and back cameras. With only days to go before Apple is expected to unveil the iPad 2 at its March 2nd press event, new information obtained by Engadget suggests that Apple has scaled back its plans for its latest iPad.

Citing “engineering issues,”, it appears that both the high resolution display and SD card slot have been dropped. These changes may well be the last minute changes that appear to have disrupted manufacturing plans.

As for what we can expect from the iPad 2, it appears that it will look much like the original but slightly thinner. It is expected to come with a more powerful A5 processor, 512MB RAM, and at least a front-facing camera.

A new version of iOS (version 5) could also be previewed. New and revamped cloud services (including MobileMe) could also be announced.

MWC and CTIA push out 2012 event dates

Two of the largest mobile phone trade shows will take place later in 2012 than they have traditionally done. The Mobile World Congress will take place in late February rather than mid-February and CTIA Wireless will move from March to May. The moves are seen as a response to the growing number of mobile phone announcements taking place at CES in early January. Pushing out the shows will give companies (and everyone covering the announcements) a bit more breathing room between major announcements.

The GSMA Mobile World Congress 2012 will once again take place in Barcelona but will start February 27th and run to March 1st. Further changes could be in store from 2013 onwards as the GSMA considers bids from Barcelona, Munich, Paris, and Milan to host the show from 2013 to 2017.

CTIA Wireless 2012 will run from May 8th to May 10th in New Orleans, Louisiana According to Robert Mesirow, CTIA vice president and show director: “We decided to have the show in May after listening to our customers who wanted to use the show as an advantageous opportunity to launch products focused on back-to-school and fourth quarter retail cycles.”

Samsung

A report this week from the Korean Yonhap News suggests that Samsung will soon add a third Android tablet to its lineup. The new device, likely another Galaxy Tab model, will apparently come with an 8.9-inch display, placing it between the 7-inch Galaxy Tab and the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The report had few other details beyond indicating that this third tablet would launch in the first half of the year, possibly as early as next month. A global launch is planned.

It will be interesting to see how this 8.9-inch model stands up against the similarly-sized LG Optimus Pad.

Microsoft suspends Windows Phone 7 updates to Samsung phones

Microsoft Windows Phone

Microsoft yesterday confirmed that it has temporarily suspended the deployment of its first Windows Phone 7 update to Samsung phones after users reported issues.

We’ve identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacts a small number of Samsung phones. We’re working to correct the problem as quickly as possible. But as a precaution, we’ve briefly suspended updates to Samsung phones. We are continuing to update other Windows Phone models as scheduled.

Since the update was first released, Microsoft has found that over 90 percent of all users who received the update notification have successfully updated their devices. Of the remaining 10 percent, half failed due to either a bad Internet connection or insufficient computer storage space. I’m assuming that the other half are Samsung phone users caught out by that third issue.

Microsoft did not provide details as to when it expects to resume pushing out the update to Samsung phones.

Apple March 2011 press event
