HP TouchPad

HP this week announced a CA$50 rebate on the purchase of the 32GB TouchPad. But there is a catch: The offer is limited to people who already own a webOS smartphone.

When the first webOS phone came out, a lot of you took a chance on our new platform. We appreciate your support — as customers, as champions, and even occasionally as our most thoughtful critics — and we’d like to make it just a little easier for you to experience the latest version of the power of HP webOS.

The $50 rebate is valid until July 31st on the 32GB model only and applies to both Canada and the US. Proof of ownership of a Palm Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi, or Pixi Plus will be required. It looks like owners of newer devices such as the Pre 2 or the Veer are not eligible though. You should have further details of the offer in your inbox.

The HP TouchPad will be available in the US on July 1st and in Canada on July 15th. The 16GB model will sell for US$499 (CA$519.99) while the 32GB one will sell for US$599.99 (CA$619.99).

HP talking to companies about webOS licensing

Hewlett-Packard

Remember those comments that HP would be open to licensing its webOS operating system? HP CEO Leo Apotheker confirmed in an interview that those hints have progressed to talks with a number of interested companies. He said, “I can share with you that a number of companies have expressed interest. We are continuing our conversations,” but provided little additional information.

Citing “three people with knowledge of the discussions,” Bloomberg named Samsung as one of the interested companies. The move is motivated by rumours that Google will restrict modifications to its Android mobile operating system (something hinted at in the past). Neither HP nor Samsung would confirm that the two are talking about webOS though.

ThisIsMyNext.com reached out to Jon Rubinstein, former Palm CEO and current HP executive, who added, “If someone wants to really invest, and potentially help develop webOS, we’re interested in talking to them.” Rubinstein also made it clear that HP is looking for someone to commit to webOS as their primary choice: “If it was the primary one they were going to do and they were going to add real value back into the ecosystem, and ‘oh by the way’ they were doing some Android or Microsoft stuff, of course we’d consider it – but if we’re going to be one of 5 or 6 OSs, it’s hard to see – it wouldn’t make any sense.” The comment suggests that companies such as HTC would be out given their approach of offering devices powered by different operating systems.

Latest iPhone rumour: Free iPhone 3GS and new iPhone 5 out this year

Apple

RBC analyst Mike Abramsky has weighed into the iPhone4S/iPhone 5 rumour mill with his own predictions. According to his latest research note, Apple will not release an entry-level iPhone this year but could do so in 2012. This contradicts an earlier report that Apple would unveil both it and the iPhone 5 this year.

Abramsky instead expects Apple to reduce the price of the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 to US$0 and US$99 respectively with the new iPhone 5 to come in at the traditional US$199/US$299 price point. The iPhone 3GS could also be sold for US$399 unlocked.

It’s not clear if Abramsky’s iPhone 5 is the slightly upgraded iPhone 4 version (also known as the iPhone 4S) or a radically upgraded design.

RIM halts work on on 10-inch PlayBook in favour of QNX smartphone?

Research In Motion

Remember those rumours that RIM was working on a 10-inch version of the PlayBook? While it appears that the rumours were in fact true, it also now looks like RIM has put those plans on hold. N4BB.com is reporting that “the entire 10-inch PlayBook development has been canceled” in favour of its first QNX-powered BlackBerry ‘Superphone.’

Contrary to earlier statements, RIM is apparently considering a 1.2GHz single-core processor (the same as for the BlackBerry Bold 9900) for the the QNX smartphone. A dual-core processor has not been completely ruled out but battery life is a concern. RIM is also looking at a 4.3-inch display running a resolution of 900+ pixels.

The decision to halt development of the 10-inch PlayBook will also allow RIM to focus more on the LTE 4G PlayBook. N4BB.com sources suggest that it will be released in October 2011, echoing statements made by Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis a couple of weeks ago.

There is no word yet on when RIM will launch its first QNX-powered smartphone but it is unlikely to be in 2011.

HP TouchPad

TechCrunch has learned that the first official Facebook tablet app may not make its debut on the Apple iPad as most would have expected. Instead, it could launch this Friday along with the webOS-powered HP TouchPad. This is not to say that Facebook is not working on an iPad version as well but it does appear that we will see the TouchPad version first.

Among the tablet features caught in the screenshots obtained by TechCrunch is a tile view of the Newsfeed. Photos use a similar tiled view.

Facebook on HP TouchPad?

The HP TouchPad will launch in the US on July 1st and in Canada on July 15th.

Update: Facebook reached out to TechCrunch to clarify the story: “This app was not built by Facebook but by HP.” So still no official Facebook app on any tablet…

Apple to launch two iPhones in September?

Apple

Rumours continue to swirl about Apple’s plans for its latest iPhone. Will it be a specification bump with little physical changes (a la iPhone 3GS) or a radically changed design? The latest market analyst to weigh in on this matter is proposing the best of both worlds: Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore suggests that Apple will announce both in September (without citing any sources).

Whitmore suggests that Apple will release the mid-range iPhone 4S to take advantage of Research In Motion and Nokia’s current challenges. Such a device, unlocked and costing around US$349, would also “drive significantly greater penetration,” especially in the pre-paid market. Many markets, such as Africa and Latin America, are made up of a majority of pre-paid customers. A cheaper iPhone, one that customers could pay for upfront, could open up a market of about a billion new customers to Apple.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty suggests that she expects Apple to start ramping production for the new iPhone (she expects only one) in mid to late August with a launch in late September (timelines echoed by Bloomberg last week)
