GoogleGoogle chairman Eric Schmidt recently revealed plans to launch its own Android tablet within the next six months. Details are now emerging about what this device could look like. Citing its usual “supply chain” sources, Digitimes reports that Google is looking at taking on Amazon and its Kindle Fire tablet rather than Apple and its dominant iPad tablet.

The report suggests that Google’s tablet will run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and come with a 7-inch display. It could be priced below US$199 to compete against the Kindle Fire. At that price, it remains to be seen if it will be the “tablet of the highest quality” promised by Schmidt.

The Google tablet (it remains to be seen if it would be branded as a Nexus device) could launch as early as March or April.

HTC Radiant LTE Windows Phone for AT&T revealed?

The HTC Radiant is one of three Windows Phone devices that AT&T is rumoured to announce next week at CES 2012. Little was known about it until a leaked image surfaced today.

It appears to share many similarities with the HTC Titan (which AT&T already offers) but there are also a few differences. These include the camera LED flashes switching sides and what appears to be a larger front-facing camera. It may also not be possible to replace the battery without having it serviced.

Rumoured HTC Radiant

There are still no details on the specifications. PocketNow suggests that it will come with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB of RAM. It may also retain the 4.7-inch WVGA display of the HTC Titan. A larger battery may also have been added to deal with LTE connectivity power consumption.

The HTC Radiant is expected to be announced next week at CES 2012.

Microsoft and partners to spend US$200 million on U.S. Windows Phone marketing

Posted by  Comments Off on Microsoft and partners to spend US$200 million on U.S. Windows Phone marketing
Jan 042012

Windows PhoneMicrosoft and Nokia have promised a big marketing push for Windows Phone once it makes its U.S. debut. Just how big is now coming to light as details emerge about the marketing plans to support the launch.

Microsoft, Nokia and AT&T could between them spend about US$100 million on the Nokia Ace which is scheduled to launch in March. The carrier has given the device “hero” status meaning that AT&T will itself promote the device in advertising and its retail network. The success of the Nokia Ace will also determine whether a future device could also be given “hero” status for the next holiday season.

Another US$100 million will be spent by Microsoft and other hardware partners (such as Samsung). Aside from the significant advertising blitz we can expect, one program will focus on sales incentives for retail employees. Payments of between US$10 and US$15 made could be made for each Windows Phone device sold, depending on the number sold. The hope is that this will translate to sales people recommending Windows Phone devices over Android and iOS ones.

After yesterday’s teaser, Sony Ericsson today posted a number of pictures of a new smartphone ahead of its expected CES announcement. The pictures, the ones below, show a dedicated shutter button, a microHDMI port, an HD camera, and a camera icon.

Sony Ericsson CES 2012 teaser

Two Sony Ericsson smartphones have been revealed by recent rumours: The Xperia Nozomi (LT26i) and the LT28at (perhaps as the Xperia Ion). Leaked pictures of the Nozomi don’t quite line up with these (eg, the Nozomi camera has the flash underneath whereas this one as the ‘HD’ text) suggesting that this announcement could be for the LT28at or an unheard-of-so-far model.

BlackBerry 10 Slider ‘Milan’ cancelled?

Jan 042012

It could be a case of ‘We hardly knew you.’ N4BB is reporting that Research In Motion has cancelled the BlackBerry 10 slider codenamed Milan. According to the source, the decision is due to “an issue with hardware.”

Rumoured BlackBerry Milan

N4BB adds that the Milan was to have come with a 4.2-inch display. RIM may have found that the combination of portrait slider form factor and large display resulted in an ackward design. It remains to be seen if the portrait slider will make a return with an updated design.

RIM is still rumoured to have four other devices in development with the BlackBerry London likely to be the first to be released. The first of these is expected to launch late this year. Development has been held up as RIM waits for a a new LTE dual-core Qualcomm chipset. Rumours are suggesting that delays are due to software development being behind schedule.

Birthday time: Gadgetorama turns 7

Birthday hatIt was 7 years ago today that I launched Gadgetorama. Along the way, we have posted 8509 stories with 1598 in 2011 alone. It is quite amazing how much our mobile gadgets have changed over this time.

The first official Gadgetorama story was about leaked pictures of the still unreleased Windows Mobile 5.0. And now we’re only days away from Nokia’s big CES launch of Windows Phone in North America. Six years ago on this day, Palm launched its Palm Treo 700w powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. Palm is no more and webOS, on which it bet its future, is now headed to the open-source realm where it will hopefully live on.

As for what is in store for Gadgetorama this year, with the site finally off the custom CMS I had built so many years ago, I am now going to focus more on the site’s growth. And that’s where I need your help. If Gadgetorama is a useful and usual stop on your Internet sojourn, please let others know: Subscribe to our Twitter feed, retweet the stories you find interesting, like us on Facebook, and don’t hesitate to leave a comment about anything you see here.

So, welcome to all those who found Gadgetorama this year and decided to make it a regular stop. And a warm thank you to those who have been making the stop for longer than that. Now let’s get back to the news…

ASUS responds to Transformer Prime GPS and bootloader complaints

ASUS Transformer PrimeIn the same update where it announced the release of its Android 4.0 update for the Transformer Prime, ASUS also tackled two complaints that have surfaced as customers began getting their hands on the tablet.

First, ASUS responded to complaints about varying degrees of success (or lack thereof) getting GPS to work properly. Describing the Transformer Prime as “not a professional GPS device,” it explained that a number of factors can affect performance. Among them is the tablet’s metallic unibody design as well as external factors such as weather, buildings, and surrounding environments. A fix for the issue may not be as simple as a software patch. ASUS has gone as far as removing the reference to GPS functionality on product pages:

Please understand there are limitations when using the GPS function. To avoid inconveniencing users who demand a powerful GPS device, we made the decision to remove it from our specification sheet and marketing communications. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

ASUS also indicated that it will release bootloader unlocking tool after it came to light that the Transformer Prime comes with a locked and encrypted bootloader. It attributes the decision to lock it down to DRM, namely Google DRM. It warns that customers opting to use the unlocking tool will not only lose access to Google’s video rental service but will also void their warranties.

No timeline was given for the release of the bootloader unlock tool.

Is either of these a deal breaker for anyone?
