Samsung outlines U.S. carrier Android 4.0 Galaxy upgrade plans

Posted by  Comments Off on Samsung outlines U.S. carrier Android 4.0 Galaxy upgrade plans
Apr 242012

SamsungSamsung has posted new details about its Android 4.0 upgrade plans for devices offered by U.S. carriers. The list does not provide specific timelines and Samsung warns that “this list may be altered as updates are confirmed or released.”

AT&T leads the pack with six devices, including the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, and Nexus S, scheduled for updates. Sprint and Verizon both have two devices up for updates. Samsung and T-Mobile USA are still “in close communication” to determine which devices will be updated.

The following Wi-Fi-only devices are also scheduled for updates: the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 Wi-Fi, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi.

It should come as no surprise that both the original Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab are not listed. Despite an outcry about its decision, Samsung has yet to reverse its stand on providing updates for these devices.

Only one update is currently available. It is for Sprint’s Nexus S 4G (SPH-d720).

Samsung has so far avoided naming the “Next Galaxy” device that it will unveil on May 3rd. Rumours have suggested that it may not be called the Galaxy S III as many expect. Samsung may now have put those rumours to rest by (accidentally?) revealing the “galaxy s3″ name in its description of its Unpacked 2012 event app.

That Samsung will unveil its Galaxy S III next week now looks like a pretty good bet…

What is the Sony Xperia ST27?

Apr 232012

A new and so far unknown Xperia model surfaced last week courtesy of its UPnP Forum certification. The entry reveals little about the Xperia ST27. Could it be the model number for a device caught on Sony’s leaked 2012 roadmap?

UPnP certification for Sony Xperia ST27

XperiaBlog surmises that the ST27 could be the successor to the Xperia active (ST17). If so, it will likely be dust resistant and waterproof like its predecessor.

There is no word on availability or pricing.

Smaller Apple iPhone model rumours resurface

Posted by  Comments Off on Smaller Apple iPhone model rumours resurface
Apr 232012

AppleRumours of a cheaper and smaller iPhone have been around for some time. They have now resurfaced courtesy of a China Times report. The claim (as usual) is that the new model would allow Apple to better compete against cheaper devices, especially lower-end Android ones.

Such rumours have surfaced a number of times but never materialized. Each time, Apple has chosen to simply continue offering an older model at a reduced price along with the new model. With rumours that the next iPhone will sport a larger display, the current iPhone 4S could by default become the smaller model. Does Apple really need another smaller model?

The report adds that the iPhone nano could be introduced at the same time as the next generation iPhone.

SamsungSamsung may be unveiling more than just a new smartphone at its May 3rd Samsung Unpacked event. Citing “a source familiar with the matter,” CNet Asia is reporting that the manufacturer could also unveil a new 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab.

Unlike the upcoming Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) that may now come with a quad-core processor, this model will sport a dual-core processor. No other details were given about it. Perhaps it will come with an HD display?

Samsung could also unveil its own cloud service called S-Cloud. It would offer users both free and paid music, movies and TV shows as well as the ability to upload their content.
