Rumour: Google to announce next Nexus device in “next 30 days”

Sep 302012

Google AndroidWhile there have been a number of recent rumours about Google’s next Nexus device or perhaps even devices, they have been quite scattered For example, there’s a US$99 Nexus tablet, a 3G Nexus 7 tablet, and a 5-inch Google Nexus 5 smartphone by HTC. Things could be about to get clearer though.

Citing “three different industry sources,” Android And Me now reports that Google will launch their next Nexus smartphone within the “next 30 days”. The report adds that the next Nexus has already been leaked and will come with a new version of Android. Rather than a major release, it will be a point release though. Perhaps the Android 4.1.2 release that we already heard about?

The report then conjectures that Google could use the an interview between Walt Mossberg and Andy Rubin during AllThingsD: Dive Into Mobile at the end of October to launch the new smartphone. It adds that the Nexus could be a variant of the upcoming LG Optimus G.

With Samsung also rumoured to be working on a Nexus smartphone, perhaps we will see more than one device announced after all. What do you think?

Sep 302012

Along with a number of recent pictures of the upcoming BlackBerry 10 L-Series, a leak has given us alleged detailed specifications. Three L-Series models are planned to support different markets. The oft-rumoured BlackBerry 10 London (R072) will be the world version while the Laguna (R069) and Lisbon (R070) are planned for the Canada and U.S. markets. More specifically, the Lisbon is headed to undisclosed Canadian carriers and AT&T and the Laguna to Verizon.

Rumoured BlackBerry 10 L-Series specifications:

  • Processor (London): TI OMAP4 + ST-E MS730
  • Processor (Lisbon/Laguna): Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960

  • Front-facing camera: 2MP
  • Connectors: Micro-USB, micro-HDMI
  • Battery: 1,800mAh
  • Dimensions / weight: 130 x 65.6 x 9 millimeters

Rumoured RIM BlackBerry L-Serries London specifications

The specifications line up quite well with earlier details but there a few odd details. The operating system is referred to as “Superphone/QNX OS” rather than BlackBerry 10. And despite the Qualcomm MSM8960 SoC sporting Bluetooth 4.0, version 2.1 is listed here. It could well be that these slides are quite old or early draft versions. They could also be fakes.

Open webOS 1.0 Edition launched

Posted by  Comments Off on Open webOS 1.0 Edition launched
Sep 292012

Back in January, HP promised to deliver the open source version of webOS in September. It made good on this promise yesterday with the release of Open webOS 1.0 Edition.

Today is a great day for Open webOS. We have completed our initial roadmap and are releasing Open webOS 1.0 on schedule, as promised.

Our combined efforts with the community and hard work have paid off, and we are now ready to move on to the next phase together. With this release we have affirmed our commitment to meet our goals and create a vibrant open source community.

This latest update has not any introduced major changes except to add support for the web-based Enyo 2 application framework.

Now that Open webOS is a complete operating system, anyone can take it and port it over to new devices. HP did a port to a TouchSmart All-in-One “in a few days” as the video below demonstrates but has no plans to develop new webOS devices or offer an upgrade to existing devices for now.

Open webOS is also being ported to a Galaxy Nexus by the WebOS Ports team. Not all features work yet but it shows the potential that Open webOS offers.

It is likely that we will see a variety of ports over the upcoming months but it remains to be seen if a manufacturer will release devices powered by Open webOS.

Apple CEO apologizes for Maps app issues and suggests alternatives

Posted by  Comments Off on Apple CEO apologizes for Maps app issues and suggests alternatives
Sep 282012

AppleApple’s new Maps app has been widely criticized since its launch in iOS 6 due to inaccuracies and bugs. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has now published an open letter in which he recognizes that its new mapping application does not live up to the usual standards associated with Apple:

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

Cook added that Apple is “doing everything we can to make Maps better.” He also took the unusual step of suggesting other options that users could look into:

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Kudos to Apple for the frank response to this issue…

Google to launch US$99 Google Nexus tablet?

Posted by  Comments Off on Google to launch US$99 Google Nexus tablet?
Sep 272012

Google Nexus 7Google and partner ASUS could launch two new Nexus tablet models by the end of the year. According to Digitimes, one could sell for US$199 (the same price as the 8GB model does now) and a second for as low as US$99. Both would be thinner than the current model and use TN (Twisted nematic) panels from HannStar Display.

It’s unclear how Google and ASUS would get to the US$99 price point. There are a few possibilities. For one, it could downgrade the specifications (less powerful processor, less memory, etc). The risk here is that it could end up with a too-cheap product with the reputation to match. It could also follow in Amazon’s footsteps and offer an ad-subsidized device. With users increasingly getting used to ad-sponsored aps, could an ad-sponsored homepage be next? Then again, it’s still just a rumour.

The report adds that the move may be in response to the expected launch of Apple’s iPad mini in October.

RIM announces better than expected Q2 Fiscal Year 2013 results

Posted by  Comments Off on RIM announces better than expected Q2 Fiscal Year 2013 results
Sep 272012

Research In MotionResearch In Motion today announced its Q2 Fiscal Year 2013 results and delivered better news than expected. Revenues comes in at US$2.9 billion, up 2% over the previous quarter. Despite the better than expected revenues, RIM still recorded a net loss of US$235 million (including restructuring costs).

“Despite the significant changes we are implementing across the organization, our second quarter results demonstrate that RIM is progressing on its financial and operational commitments during this major transition,” said Thorsten Heins, President and CEO. “Subscribers grew to approximately 80 million global users, revenue grew sequentially from the first quarter, cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term investments increased by approximately $100 million to $2.3 billion, and carriers and developers are responding well to previews of our upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform. Make no mistake about it, we understand that we have much more work to do, but we are making the organizational changes to drive improvements across the company, our employees are committed and motivated, and BlackBerry 10 is on track to launch in the first calendar quarter of 2013.”

RIM reconfirmed that it now had 80 million subscribers and reported shipments of 7.4 million BlackBerry smartphones and 130,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks.

While the news was far better than many had expected, RIM still expects to face “continued pressure” due to “the increasing competitive environment, lower handset volumes, increased marketing expense associated with the launch of BlackBerry 10, and some impact from pressure by customers to reduce RIM’s monthly infrastructure access fees.” It predicts another loss for the next fiscal quarter.

RIM also reiterated that BlackBerry 10 remains on track for a Q1 2013 launch.
