HTC One in silverAs expected, HTC today unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, billing it as “a bold step forward” rather than simply another specification bump. Along with it, HTC also introduced the latest version of HTC Sense. Called New Sense, it comes with a number of new features including HTC BlinkFeed which acts as a live homepage, HTC Zoe, a camera app, and HTC BoomSound for improved audio.

“People today immerse themselves in a constant stream of updates, news and information. Although smartphones are one of the main ways we stay in touch with the people and information we care about, conventional designs have failed to keep pace with how people are actually using them,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “A new, exciting approach to the smartphone is needed and with the new HTC One, we have re-imagined the mobile experience from the ground up to reflect this new reality.”

HTC BlinkFeed will provide live content on your homescreen. Along with some 1,400 partners who will provide content, it can also display information from your social networks.

Declaring the “era of the megapixel” over, HTC also unveiled its UltraPixel camera which gathers some 300 percent more light than a traditional one, promising “astounding low-light performance.” It also introduced HTC Zoe, a new camera app that can capture photos and a short 3 second video simultaneously. Much as the BlackBerry Z10 does, it also allows you to eliminate blinking eyes from your shots. Other features include enhanced 360′ panorama, time sequencing and object removal.

HTC BoomSound consists of dual front-facing stereo speakers with a dedicated amplifier, Beats Audio integration, and HTC Sense Voice which can boost call volume and quality in noisy environments.

Here is a closer look at the HTC’s One specifications:

There was good news from Samsung Canada yesterday among all the tweets about the Super Bowl and The Next Big Thing. The Canadian arm of the manufacturer announced that the Jelly Bean upgrade for the Galaxy Note II would begin rolling out on Wednesday, February 6th:

As you can see from the tweet, it will include Samsung’s Multi Window function as well as Chinese language support.

While Samsung did not provide additional details, the rollout will likely be staggered by carrier (as we have seen in the past). With the Note II carried by Bell, Mobilicity, Rogers, SaskTel, TELUS, Videotron, and WIND Mobile, it may be a few more days at least before everyone sees it on their device. As usual, you will be able to check manually to see if the upgrade is available yet: Settings -> About phone -> System Updates -> Check now.

We are now only days from Research In Motion announcing its BlackBerry 10 smartphones. Along with the new devices, we expect to learn when they will launch and what pricing will be like. Ahead of the announcement, HowardForums has learned that Bell will launch its first BlackBerry 10 device, presumably the all-touch BlackBerry Z10 as the QWERTY-keyboard model is set to launch a bit later, on February 5th. Available in black or white, it will sell for CA$650 with no contract.

Dealers are expected to start receiving stock on January 30th, the day of the announcement itself.

A separate rumour earlier this week indicated that U.S. carriers would offer the BlackBerry Z10 for US$149 or below with a two-year contract. Canada could see it for a similar price but with a three-year contract instead.

The BlackBerry Z10 is expected to come with LTE connectivity, a 4.2-inch HD display (1280×768), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, an 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and a 1,800mAh battery.

Update: According to CrackBerry, TELUS will also launch the BlackBerry Z10 on February 5th. If the rumours are accurate, it is likely that Rogers (and possibly other carriers) would also launch on this date.

Research In Motion will unveil its much anticipated BlackBerry 10 devices on January 30th at a series of worldwide events, including ones in Toronto and New York. But it’s not quite as clear when these devices will actually go on sale. RIM has remained tight-lipped about those details so far. A leaked Best Buy Canada inventory system screenshot now has given us our first clue:

Best Buy inventory system reveals BlackBerry 10 device launch date?

The image suggests that the Bell version of the BlackBerry 10 smartphone will launch on February 28th. Two things are likely: This will be the all-touch device (the BlackBerry Z10?) and other carrier launches will happen at the same time.

Needless to say, RIM had no comment when asked about the dates: “We understand that there is a lot of excitement for BlackBerry 10. We will launch the platform on January 30th and until then we won’t comment on speculation.”

RIM has previously indicated that pricing and availability details will be announced when it unveils its new devices.

TELUS starts taking RIM BlackBerry 10 pre-registrations

Research In Motion

TELUS today became the latest Canadian carrier to start taking pre-registrations for BlackBerry 10 devices. While the tweet making the announcement boasted pre-orders, the sitelet set up only allows you to register to receive updates. This what Bell is doing more closely than the actual all-touch model reservations that Rogers is now taking. Having said that, TELUS says that “Pre-register now and you’ll be the first to know when pre order is available.”

TELUS has a small section dedicated to BlackBerry 10 showing off the textured back of what is likely the all-touch BlackBerry Z10 and a sneak peek video.

Research In Motion will unveil BlackBerry 10 and the first BlackBerry 10 devices at a number of worldwide events, including Toronto and New York, on January 30th.

Bell today began allowing customers to pre-register for updates about the upcoming BlackBerry 10 launch. Both business and personal users (or those using both) are welcome to sign up.

It looks like the pre-registration will give customers a chance to get regular updates but does not give them a chance to reserve a BlackBerry 10 device the same way Rogers is doing.

Bell is also holding a weekly draw to award a new BlackBerry 10 device to lucky winners although it does not specify whether it will be the all-touch model or the one with a QWERTY keyboard. The contest closes on January 30th, the day that RIM will unveil its new BlackBerry devices. A total of five devices (each valued at CA$700) are up for grabs.
