FidoFido today announced that it will launch its LTE service this summer in a number of Canadian cities.

“We are thrilled to offer the benefits of LTE network technology to Fido customers this year,” said Steven Sarfin, senior director of marketing, Fido Solutions. “Our focus at Fido has always been on providing the best value to our customers. With data plans starting from $10/month, affordable LTE service is a perfect complement to the exclusive FidoADVANTAGE programs like FidoTRADE™, Fido LiveANSWERS™ and FidoDOLLARS™ our customers already enjoy.” Sarfin added.

The Fido Mobile Hotspot will be the first LTE device that the carrier will offer. It will allow up to 10 Wi-Fi capable devices to connect to its Wi-Fi hotspot to benefit from LTE download speeds. Fido will also launch LTE-enabled smartphones later this year. Where LTE is not available, devices will be able to fall back to Fido’s HSPA+ network. Fido will also offer LTE SIMs later this summer to customers wishing to bring their own LTE device over.

While initial Fido LTE coverage will include Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and St. Johns, it is planning to rapidly expand this coverage. By the end of the year, LTE in Moncton, Trois-Rivières, Sherbrooke, Québec City, Kingston, Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Niagara, Windsor, Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, London, Barrie, Sudbury, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kelowna, Abbotsford and Victoria should also benefit from Fido LTE coverage.

It appears that Rogers’s flanker brand Fido could soon launch its LTE network. A leaked screenshot of a customer activation/upgrade tool shows the option of “LTE Voice and Data Sharing Bundles.”

Fido to offer LTE soon?

If and when Fido does launch LTE, it is likely it will use Rogers’ own LTE network and offer the same coverage and speeds (on average between 12Mbps and 25Mbps).

There is no word on timing or what devices could be available at launch (the new Apple iPad perhaps?).
