Rogers CommunicationsRogers Wireless on Sunday confirmed via Facebook that it will offer the Google Android 2.3.3 update to its Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 customers:

We will support the update and make it available to our customers. We don’t have timing yet, though. Stay tuned.

The upgrade will offer most of functionality of the Gingerbread platform, as well as some Sony Ericsson specific features. Among these are the new Facebook inside Xperia app, the customizable horizontal app tray and the media experience widgets first introduced this year on devices such as the Sony Ericsson arc. Contrary to original plans, the original camera UI (Éclair version) will also be kept.

Sony Ericsson began rolling out the Gingerbread update last week. It warned that not all carriers would offer the upgrade. Kudos to Rogers committing to this latest update.

Following in Bell’s footsteps, Rogers is set to launch a new mobile phone category of its own. Rather than going high-end as Bell did with the new ‘Superphone’ category, Rogers is looking to introduce a ‘Smartphone Lite’ category that will focus on devices “available at affordable prices with new low cost data plan options.”

According to a leaked internal document obtained by MobileSyrup.com, Rogers will launch the ‘Smartphone Lite’ category sometime in Q3 with the upcoming Nokia X7.

Rogers Smartphone Lite category

It will be interesting to see how Rogers markets this new product category. Will this be where free smartphones (with the obligatory three-year contract) come to slowly fade away? The suggestion that the Nokia X7 will start there seems to suggest otherwise.

Rogers Communications

A new rumour suggests that Rogers Wireless could launch the HP Pre 3 as early as July 19th (it currently offers the HP Pre 2). Rogers also appears set to carry the Wi-Fi-only HP TouchPad alongside the newest webOS smartphone.

The same rumour suggests that July 15th will be the launch date for the HP TouchPad for some Canadian big box retailers (Best Buy, Future Shop perhaps?). Prices in Canada could also line up with those in the US (CA$499.99 and CA$599 for the 16GB and 32GB models respectively) rather than the slightly higher prices we were expecting.

If this rumour turns out to be accurate, don’t be surprised if Rogers later announces a 3G version of the HP TouchPad.
