Samsung Galaxy Note IISamsung Canada today launched the Galaxy Note II with multiple Canadian carriers. Finding it though in a store may be a bit of an adventure challenge as Samsung warned that it will be scarce for a few weeks:

Today Samsung marks the official release of the GALAXY Note II, our latest premium Smartphone and the Next Big Thing in mobile communication devices. We are working hard to get inventory to all of our carrier and retail partners, however in-store availability will be scarce until we get our full supply to stores over the next two weeks. Thank you for your patience and love for the GALAXY Note II.

A number of Canadian carriers will offer the Samsung Galaxy Note II. These are Bell, Mobilicity, Rogers, SaskTel, TELUS, Videotron, and WIND Mobile. WIND Mobile reaffirms commitment to Canada

WIND MobileOrascom announced yesterday that it was planning to convert its non-voting stake in WIND Mobile into a voting one thereby taking control of the Canadian carrier and making it Canada’s first foreign-owned carrier. WIND Mobile today issued a press release to reconfirm that the announcement does not affect its current commitments. It also sought to put to rest merger rumours.

“VimpelCom Group and WIND Mobile remain committed to the Canadian marketplace and becoming Canada’s fourth-largest carrier,” said Tony Lacavera, Chairman and CEO of WIND Mobile. “Contrary to certain preliminary stories in the media this morning, while we’re always considering our strategic options, the company is not currently engaged in any active merger discussion. One thing remains unchanged – our commitment to offering Canadians simple, fair and easy-to understand wireless plans at an affordable rate.”

Past rumours have suggested that WIND Mobile could merge with either Mobilicity or Public Mobile and sought partnerships in a bid to expand its network.

WIND MobileWith Canada having rolled out new foreign ownership rules for the telecom sector, Egypt-based Orascom is moving forward with a plan to assume voting control of WIND Mobile which now has over 500,000 subscribers. The company will exercise an option to convert a 65% non-voting stake into voting shares. The move would see control shift away from Globalive Communications but it is expected to retain a minority stake.

“Orascom exercised a right they have always had to increase their voting shares,” said Wind CEO Anthony Lacavera. “I see this as a big positive for Wind in that this will give them the confidence to continue investing in Canada and it positions us to lead the necessary new entrant consolidation.”

The move would make WIND Mobile Canada’s first fully foreign-owned carrier.

Orascom, itself owned by VimpelCom after being acquired last year, will need approval from Canadian investment authorities, something it expects to happen by the end of the year or early 2013. Shareholders will also vote on the proposal in November.

As for WIND Mobile’s operations, Lacavera expects that there will be no changes to the business plan or to the company’s management.
