Mozilla today sent out invitations for a press conference that will take place on February 24th, the day before MWC 2013 officially opens. It confirms that Mozilla will not only attend but also exhibiting something at the event:

Mozilla MWC 2013 press conference invitation

The invitation makes no mention of what Mozilla plans to announce but there’s a good chance it will have something to do with its Firefox OS. It recently announced two developer smartphones, the Keon and the Peak, which are developed by Spain’s Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica.

While Firefox OS is still under development, the launch of developer phones suggests that it is in the final stretch. Could Mozilla formally announce Firefox OS at MWC 2013? We’ll know later this month.

Mozilla took another step forward this week with its Firefox OS, launching two developer preview phones. Developed by Spain’s Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica, the Keon is billed as “All you need to begin” while the the higher-end Peak is billed as “One step beyond.” Mozilla hopes that developers will use its Firefox OS developer smartphones to develop apps to build out the app ecosystem for the nascent operating system:

Developer preview phones will help make the mobile web more accessible to more people. Developers are critical to the web and to Mozilla’s mission to make the web accessible to everyone. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use Firefox to discover, experience and connect to the Web. A web based on open standards and open technologies. We couldn’t have done this without web developers. Now we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we’d like to invite web developers to join us.
