HERE Maps helps you feel like a local anywhere you go. See where you are, search and discover nearby places, and get a feel for the place. Collect places to remember or for later discovery. Next-generation iPad and iPhone coming mid-2013?

AppleRumours last week suggested that Apple would launch its next iPhone smartphone (the iPhone 5S?) and iPad tablet as early as the first half of 2013. These gained steam today with a report by Digitimes that “market observers” expected many of Apple’s component suppliers to see rising component orders starting in late Q1, suggesting that Apple could unveil its next-generation iPad and iPhone devices as early as mid-2013.

The report suggests that Apple could be looking to accelerate its release cycles. It launched the iPhone 5 in September and the fourth-generation iPad in October along with the new iPad mini [product information]. The faster releases may help it better compete against competitors such as Samsung which refresh their device lineups more often. It may also simply be looking to spread out its release schedule instead of having a very busy fall release cycle this past September and October.

The report sheds no light on what we can expect to see with the new iPhone or iPad. If Apple is working on the iPhone 5S, it may be a very similar device with only a number of relatively minor component upgrades.

The report also indicates that both contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and packager Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) are now on Apple’s list of suppliers.

If nothing else, the iPhone and iPad rumours were not dormant for long!

Apple to launch iPhone 5S in mid-2013?

AppleApple may launch a new iPhone model as soon as early next year. According to the Chinese-language China Times, Apple will introduce a new iPhone along with a new iPad, and Apple TV device sometime in the first half of the year. The iPhone 5S could launch first and be followed by a new iPad about a quarter later.

Production of the iPhone 5S could start sometime in December with initial runs of between 50,000 and 100,000 units. Volume production would then follow sometime in Q1 2013.

Little is known about the iPhone 5S but if Apple follows past naming patterns, the new S model will come with a number of small component upgrades but will sport the same design as the Apple iPhone 5.

Production challenges of its current iPhone 5 and iPads appears to be the reason that Apple is accelerating the certification and deployment of new devices.

Android makes inroads in tablet market in Q3 2012

The tablet market continued to show strong growth in Q3 2012. Shipments reached 27.8 million units, a 49.5% growth over the same quarter a year ago and 6.7% over Q2 2012. Apple continued to dominate despite slowing sales (tied in part to anticipation for the iPad mini). Android made strong gains thanks in large part to Samsung and ASUS.

“After a very strong second quarter, Apple saw growth slow as both consumer and commercial (including education) shipments declined, and rumors of a forthcoming iPad mini began to heat up,” said Tom Mainelli, research director, Tablets at IDC. “We believe a sizeable percentage of consumers interested in buying an Apple tablet sat out the third quarter in anticipation of an announcement about the new iPad mini. Now that the new mini, and a fourth-generation full-sized iPad, are both shipping we expect Apple to have a very good quarter. However, we believe the mini’s relatively high $329 starting price leaves plenty of room for Android vendors to build upon the success they achieved in the third quarter.”

Here are the full numbers:

Vendor 3Q12 Shipments 3Q12 Market Share 3Q11 Shipments 3Q11 Market Share Year-over-year Change
Apple 14.0 50.4% 11.1 59.7% 26.1%
Samsung 5.1 18.4% 1.2 6.5% 325.0%
Amazon.com 2.5 9.0% NA NA NA
ASUS 2.4 8.6% 0.7 3.8% 242.9%
Lenovo 0.4 1.4% 0.2 1.1% 100%

The next few quarters will be interesting to watch. Apple has now launched its iPad mini (and fourth-generation iPad) and tablets powered by Microsoft’s new Windows 8 and Windows RT operating systems are also now hitting the market.

Apple sells 3 million new iPads in first three days

Apple iPad miniApple began selling both the iPad 4 and iPad mini this past Friday. Not surprisingly, their debut weekend was strong with three million iPads being sold over the past three days. A breakout of how many iPad minis were sold was not provided though.

“Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”

Interestingly, Apple found itself in the rare position of being “practically sold out of iPad minis” rather than fully sold out as it more traditionally has been with other product launches. Was demand more muted than it expected or was it able to get more supply out in time for the launch?

One thing is for sure: Apple can claim yet another successful product launch!

Android takes 75% share of smartphone market in Q3 2012

Google Android
According to the latest numbers from IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Google Android shipped on an incredible three out of every four smartphones in Q3 2012. Year-over-year shipments increased 91.5% to account for 136 million units out of the toal 181.1 million smartphones shipped in the quarter.

“Android has been one of the primary growth engines of the smartphone market since it was launched in 2008,” said Ramon Llamas, research manager, Mobile Phones at IDC. “In every year since then, Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition. In addition, the combination of smartphone vendors, mobile operators, and end-users who have embraced Android has driven shipment volumes higher. Even today, more vendors are introducing their first Android-powered smartphones to market.”

Apple iOS was a distant second but still recorded an impressive 57.3% year-over-year growth despite being represented by only three models. The only other OS to show growth was the combination of Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile with the former driving the majority of that growth. With a promising lineup, it will be interesting to see if Windows Phone 8 can help Microsoft increase its market share further.

Here are the complete numbers:

Operating System 3Q12 Shipment Volumes 3Q12 Market Share 3Q11 Shipment Volumes 3Q11 Market Share Year-over-year Change
Android 136.0 75.0% 71.0 57.5% 91.5%
iOS 26.9 14.9% 17.1 13.8% 57.3%
BlackBerry 7.7 4.3% 11.8 9.5% -34.7%
Symbian 4.1 2.3% 18.1 14.6% -77.3%
Windows Phone 7 / Windows Mobile 3.6 2.0% 1.5 1.2% 140%
Linux 2.8 1.5% 4.1 3.3% -31.7%
Others 0.0 0.0% 0.1 0.1% -100%
Totals 181.1 100.0% 123.7 100.0% 46.4%

It remains clear that this is still a two horse race with Microsoft and RIM with its upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS to fight it out for third.
