Research In Motion

TELUS today became the latest Canadian carrier to start taking pre-registrations for BlackBerry 10 devices. While the tweet making the announcement boasted pre-orders, the sitelet set up only allows you to register to receive updates. This what Bell is doing more closely than the actual all-touch model reservations that Rogers is now taking. Having said that, TELUS says that “Pre-register now and you’ll be the first to know when pre order is available.”

TELUS has a small section dedicated to BlackBerry 10 showing off the textured back of what is likely the all-touch BlackBerry Z10 and a sneak peek video.

Research In Motion will unveil BlackBerry 10 and the first BlackBerry 10 devices at a number of worldwide events, including Toronto and New York, on January 30th.

More pictures of Research In Motion’s all-touch BlackBerry 10 smartphone have surfaced. The device, which could be known as the BlackBerry Z10, is shown next to an Apple iPhone 4S (for a size comparison). For the first time, we see carrier branding on a BlackBerry 10 device. The device on the lft sports a Verizon logo on the top left.

BusinessInsider‘s source also provided a number of first impressions after testing both AT&T and Verizon variants:

  • The build quality is really nice. The back cover feels rubbery and snaps on sort of like the back cover on Samsung’s Galaxy S III.
  • The screen looks great.
  • The web browser is very quick, just as fast as a desktop browser. It also supports Flash.
  • You can set up separate profiles for work and personal use. This is good for people who want to use one phone for business and play.
  • The new AppWorld store looks a lot like the Google Play store for Android apps.
  • It only takes one minute to boot up.

Research In Motion will unveil BlackBerry 10 and its first BlackBerry 10 devices in less than a month now at a series of worldwide events.

Bell starts taking BlackBerry 10 pre-registrations

Bell today began allowing customers to pre-register for updates about the upcoming BlackBerry 10 launch. Both business and personal users (or those using both) are welcome to sign up.

It looks like the pre-registration will give customers a chance to get regular updates but does not give them a chance to reserve a BlackBerry 10 device the same way Rogers is doing.

Bell is also holding a weekly draw to award a new BlackBerry 10 device to lucky winners although it does not specify whether it will be the all-touch model or the one with a QWERTY keyboard. The contest closes on January 30th, the day that RIM will unveil its new BlackBerry devices. A total of five devices (each valued at CA$700) are up for grabs.

Two RIM BlackBerry 10 devices clear FCC?

Research In Motion will need to ensure that its upcoming BlackBerry 10 smartphones have all their necessary certifications in place before they can be launched. One such hurdle appears to have been passed: The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given its approval to two BlackBerry devices identified only as the RFF91LW and RFH121LW. Unfortunately, confidentiality requests have hidden away some of the more interesting documents including photos and the user manuals. Aside from the standard test results, we have an image of where the FCC label will go, giving us the silhouette of the device:

FCC label for RIM BlackBerry RFF91LW

The BlackBerry RFF91LW was cleared for AT&T’s LTE and GSM bands. Sample devices provided all ran OS 10.0.9. Less information is available about the BlackBerry RFH121LW but it does support North American bands as well as bands that “are not operational in North America.” It could be a world edition of the same device.

With the devices not being specifically identified, it remains a possibility that the devices cleared by the FCC are not the upcoming BlackBerry Z10 or X10 but one of the Dev Alpha device that developers have been provided to help them build their BlackBerry 10 apps. If so, it’s likely that similar filings exist for those devices.

All will be revealed on January 30th when RIM unveils BlackBerry 10 and its first two BlackBerry 10 devices at a number of worldwide launch events, including Toronto and New York.

It appears that the upcoming RIM BlackBerry X10, the first BlackBerry 10 device to come with a physical QWERTY keyboard, has lost its aversion to the camera. Its all-touch BlackBerry Z10 sibling is now having to share the limelight more often as more leaked pictures have surfaced. The latest come courtesy of an N4BB anonymous source:

While these latest pictures reveal nothing we have not seen before, they do show the BlackBerry X10 running the upcoming BlackBerry 10 whereas previous pictures have only shown us a black screen. They are also clearer than what we have seen before.

RIM will unveil the BlackBerry X10 and BlackBerry Z10 (assuming that these are the official names) on January 30th, 2013 at a number of worldwide launch events.

BlackBerry 10 BBM Remember

Research In Motion has confirmed that its upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system will include no BlackBerry 7 legacy code and is built instead on its QNX acquisition. Existing apps and services will be updated and new ones will also be unveiled. We caught a glimpse yesterday of BBM Video and another leaked slide also obtained via the CrackBerry forums today has revealed BlackBerry Remember.

Rumoured BBM Remember app

BlackBerry Remember will be BB10’s new task app. It also promises to do more than simply track your upcoming tasks and to-do’s. it promises to let you “capture and organize content and ideas in a way that makes it easy to decide what to do next.” You will be able to create tasks and goals from anywhere on the device and group them and track your progress for each. BBM Remember will also sync these tasks with your Outlook calendar.

All should be revealed at RIM’s upcoming worldwide unveiling events on January 30th, 2013.

Leaked slide about BBM Video

Not only is the recently introduced BBM Voice coming to BlackBerry 10 but leaked slides that first popped up in the CrackBerry forums suggest that Research In Motion’s new operating system will also offer BBM Video, a new Apple FaceTime-like service.

According to the leaked documents BBM Video will let BBM users “chat with a colleague or customer then transition to a video call for improved collaboration and share a presentation or spreadsheet instantly to help get the message across more clearly – all at the push of a button.”

A closer look at the screenshots shows that a video of the person you are talking to will take up most of the display with your own image at the bottom in a status bar. BBM Voice will also work with BBM Groups.

Expect more to be revealed about BBM Voice along with the first BlackBerry 10 devices on January 30th when RIM holds a number of worldwide launch events (including ones in Toronto and New York).

We’ve seen pictures of the all-touch BlackBerry 10 L-Series smartphone (the BlackBerry X10?) and the QWERTY-keyboard BlackBerry 10 N-Series (the BlackBerry Z10?), including this one earlier today. But never have they been seen next to each other. A new leaked image has them side-by-side now. A third device on the left, sports a different keyboard layout (without the frets). Perhaps it’s the recently announced Dev Alpha C device which comes with a physical QWERTY keyboard.

On the heels of that alleged image of the back of the upcoming BlackBerry 10 QWERTY N-Series smartphone (perhaps to be known as the BlackBerry X10?) comes a new image, this time of the front of the device:

Rumoured BlackBerry 10 N-Series smartphone

It is very similar to an earlier image leaked back in September. This one shows the front-facing camera better. One thing is clear, the BlackBerry X10 shares much of its looks with the older BlackBerry Bold 9900 albeit with a straightened out keyboard layout.

No additional details were revealed about the device. RIM has already confirmed that it will sport a 720 by 720-pixel display.

RIM will unveil its new BlackBerry 10 devices on January 30th, 2013, at a number of launch events across the world (including Toronto).

Dec 222012

Earlier this week we learned that Research In Motion might unveil its first all-touch BlackBerry 10 L-Series device as the BlackBerry Z10. The device name has now been caught on a screenshot of UK-based Carphone Warehouse’s inventory system:

The screenshot also indicates that the BlackBerry Z10 will be available in either black or white.

If the inventory system contains pricing information, it is unfortunately cut off.

RIM will unveil its new BlackBerry 10 devices at a number of worldwide events on January 30th, 2013. In Canada, the all-touch device can already be pre-ordered from Rogers but there are no details yet on specifications or pricing.

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry L-Series smartphone (the BlackBerry Z10?) has been the topic of many more rumours than its companion, the QWERTY keyboard BlackBerry 10 N-Series. Today, a new image of the N-Series surfaced courtesy of NerdBerry. Unfortunately, only the back of the device is revealed. Unlike the L-Series, it appears it will come with a smooth finish.

The report also suggests that the first N-Series device could be known as the BlackBerry X10 (something we first heard yesterday).

All will be revealed at a number of worldwide events on January 30th, 2013 when RIM finally unveils its first two BlackBerry 10 devices.

Nokia and RIM enter new patent license agreement

Dec 212012

NokiaAnother legal battle has been put to rest. Last month, a dispute between Nokia and RIM over WLAN patents went in Nokia’s favour, putting at risk RIM’s BlackBerry sales, including those of its upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices. Fortunately, the two companies have reached a resolution and existing patent litigations have been settled.

“We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM and reached this new agreement, while maintaining Nokia’s ability to protect our unique product differentiation,” said Paul Melin, chief intellectual property officer at Nokia. “This agreement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”

As a result of the settlement, Nokia will receive a one-time payment and on-going payments from RIM. More specific terms of the agreement were not revealed.

The agreement is one less hurdle that RIM will need to deal with as it prepares to launch its BlackBerry 10 smartphones next month.
