Amazon Kindle PaperwhiteWhen Amazon launched Kindle book sales in Canada last December, the move was widely seen as a sign that Amazon’s e-readers were not far behind. And that’s exactly what happened with Amazon yesterday announcing that the Kindle Paperwhite (3G or Wi-Fi-only) as well as the Kindle are now available directly from Amazon.ca.

“We’re excited to make the best-selling and most advanced e-readers in the world available to our Amazon.ca customers for the first time, making it easier and more affordable than ever for Canadian readers to own a Kindle,” said Dave Limp, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “With a Kindle in their hands, Canadian customers can now directly access the Kindle Store with the largest selection of the books people want to read, including the largest selection of best sellers and over 250,000 titles that are exclusive to the Kindle Store.”

Much as in the U.S., the Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G offers a free 3G connection to Amazon’s WhisperNet to shop for and download Digital Content.

The Canada Kindle Store offers over 1.5 million Kindle books including 50,000 French ones, most best sellers from the Globe and Mail and Le Devoir best seller lists, winners of the Giller prize, and a broad selection of works from leading Canadian publishers and authors, including Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro and Yann Martel.

Amazon is offering the Kindle for CA$89, the Kindle Paperwhite for CA$139 and the Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G for CA$199.

It’s not Friday just yet; our Weekend Fun feature is running a day early today because there is good news for those who have been waiting for Temple Run 2 to make it over to Android. Launched last week for iOS devices, it has already topped the 20 million download mark.

Temple Run 2

As you can see from the preview below, the game has been updated with new features but remains true to its predecessor as well. For example, one new feature gives each different character its own unique ability.

Temple Run 2 is free to play. Like the original, in-game purchases offer you the change to play new characters and get new powerups faster than simply by collecting coins.

You will have to run faster; that monkey chasing you is much bigger now!

Jan 232013

NEC Medias WAlong with the LG Optimus G Pro, NTT DoCoMo yesterday unveiled a rather different smartphone, the NEC Medias W smartphone which has two 4.3-inch displays. At first glance it looks like any all-touch smartphone but flip it over and you’ll find a second display. And it gets better: It can open up to offer the two displays side-by-side. The two can be used either independently or together.

NEC Medias W specifications:

  • Processor: 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • Cellular connectivity: LTE
  • Other connectivity: 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, NFC
  • Display: Two 4.3-inch qHD (540×960) LCD
  • Input: Touchscreen
  • Memory: 1GB RAM
  • Storage: 16GB onboard and microSD cards
  • Rear-facing camera: 8MP with BSI sensor
  • Front-facing camera: None
  • Battery: 2,100mAh

It remains to be seen how the NEC Medias W will fare with consumers. It’s not the first handset to sport dual displays but none so far have been clear successes.

The NEC Medias W is expected in Japan in mid-April through NTT DoCoMo. Pricing was not announced and neither were any plans to offer it in other markets.

Canadian pricing for the upcoming Surface Windows 8 Pro

Posted by  Comments Off on Canadian pricing for the upcoming Surface Windows 8 Pro
Jan 232013

Surface Windows 8 ProMicrosoft yesterday announced that the Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet would hit stores on February 9th. As expected, Canadian pricing will be slightly higher than U.S. pricing. The 64GB model will sell for CA$919 and the 128GB model for CA$1019. Much as we saw with the Surface RT pricing, Canadian pricing adds a CA$20 premium to the U.S. pricing. This is somewhat surprising as the Canadian dollar is now stronger than the U.S. one. You can probably chalk it up to additional transportation and distribution costs for Canada.

The optional Touch and Type Covers will continue to sell for CA$129 and CA$139 respectively.

Microsoft Canada also announced the 64GB version of the Surface Windows RT will be available in a new 64GB standalone version for CA$619. Previously only available with a bundled black Touch Cover, customers will now be able to choose what if any Cover they want to buy.

The Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro will be available in Canada from the Microsoft retail stores, microsoftstore.com, and a number of other still-unspecified “locations.”

Videotron today revealed exactly when it will begin offering the Google Nexus 4. Last week, it put up a banner that said that it was “coming soon”. Today we learned that soon means January 30th.

No such tweet in English but basically the tweet reads: “It’s January 30th that the Google Nexus 4 will be offered by Videotron. Are you ready?”

With no other Canadian carrier having announced plans to launch the Nexus 4, Videotron appears set to become the first to offer it here.

Pricing information is still not available.

Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro launch in Canada and U.S. set for February 9th

Posted by  Comments Off on Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro launch in Canada and U.S. set for February 9th
Jan 222013

Microsoft Surface Windows 8 ProMicrosoft today announced that its Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet (renamed from the original Microsoft Surface Pro with Windows 8) will launch in Canada and the U.S. on February 9th, only slightly later than it had originally promised.

Surface Windows 8 Pro is an exciting new addition to the Surface family, bringing a powerful, work-ready device that is just at home in the boardroom as it is the family room. Whether you’re a road warrior, a student or someone who just wants a flexible and powerful Intel PC, the Surface Windows 8 Pro will deliver. It’s the perfect complement to the Surface Windows RT and delivers hours and hours of entertainment with plenty of power and productivity to get your work done as well.

Unlike the Windows Surface RT, the Surface Windows 8 Pro will not be limited to a subset of applications and will run the full gamut of Windows applications. As a tradeoff though, it will be slightly thicker and heavier.

Microsoft already announced pricing back in November: US$899 for the 64GB model and US$999 for the the 128GB one. Pricing in Canada may be slightly higher if Windows RT tablet pricing (CA$20 higher) is any indication. Both versions will come with a Surface pen with Palm Block technology. Accessories including the Touch Cover and Type Cover will be sold separately.

The Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro will be available through all Microsoft retail stores, microsoftstore.com and at Staples and Best Buy in the U.S. as well as from a number of locations in Canada. Other markets will follow in the coming weeks.
