Motorola pokes fun at Apple Maps in latest ad

Sep 222012

That Apple will improve its new iOS 6 Maps app over time is not in question. But until it does, its competitors will see its current troubles as one of the few chinks in Apple’s armour. Case in point is Motorola’s latest ad:

Looking for 315 E 15th in Manhattan? Google Maps on DROID RAZR M will get you there & not #iLost in Brooklyn.

Mapping software is now a standard feature on smartphones. For the first time in what seems like a long time, Apple has given its competitors something that they can use to sway buyers from one device to another. It will not be enough on its own it but could could be that little bit extra needed to tip more than one decision away from Apple.

Food for thought: Is it time to coin the term ‘MapsGate’ to describe Apple’s latest public relations nightmare?

Latest Samsung ad revisits the Apple customer lineup

Sep 192012

It’s been a while since Samsung released an ad featuring its favourite competition’s customers waiting in a lineup for the “next big thing.” Continuing with its “The Next Big Thing is Already Here” theme, the latest ad features the Samsung Galaxy S III and once again takes a few jabs at Apple’s products, this time the upcoming iPhone 5.

These still make me smile…

Samsung takes aim at Apple iPhone 5 with latest ad

Sep 162012

Samsung may have lost its U.S. patent lawsuit with Apple but it remains unbowed. After a series of video ads clearly aimed at Apple fans and their near fanatical devotion to the brand, the manufacturer has now taken aim at Apple’s latest smartphone. With the tag line “It doesn’t take a genius” it compares Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III to the iPhone 5 and unsurprisingly finds the latter lacking.

Needless to say, the ad is skewed towards the Galaxy S III, touting pretty much all of its features (such as S Beam or Share Shot) but omitting to list iPhone 5 features (such as AirPlay). Samsung also takes a shot at the new Lightning connector, describing it as “a totally different plug.”

It would appear that relations between the two companies will not be warming up any time soon…

Motorola to offer US$100 credit for 2011 devices not to be upgraded to Jelly Bean

Posted by  Comments Off on Motorola to offer US$100 credit for 2011 devices not to be upgraded to Jelly Bean
Sep 062012

MotorolaAs first announced yesterday during its event with Verizon, most Motorola Android devices released from 2011 onwards will be upgraded to Jelly Bean. It also promised a US$100 credit for those devices that would not be upgraded due to hardware limitations.

If we don’t upgrade your phone to Jelly Bean, we don’t want you to miss out. Buy a select new Motorola smartphone, trade in your old phone, and we’ll give you $100 back. So you always enjoy the best from us.

It today launched a trade-in sitelet where you can go to register to be notified of when your phone’s Jelly Bean upgrade is released or how to to trade in your phone and take advantage of the credit.

The fine print states that the offer is only available to “United States sales of Android Motorola smartphones first offered in 2011 or later.” We’ve reached out to Motorola Canada to see if they will offer a similar program.

Update: Motorola Canada provided us with the following response: “Motorola is evaluating which devices will receive the Jelly Bean upgrade. We will release more details as soon as we have them.” Canadian owners will need to keep their fingers crossed a while longer.

Motorola Facebook teaser is not for the DROID RAZR HD

Aug 082012

Motorola yesterday kicked off a Facebook teaser campaign asking users to guess what phone it was hinting at. Most of us expected the campaign to culminate in the announcement of a new smartphone with the DROID RAZR HD as the likeliest candidate. Today’s hint rules out the DROID RAZR HD, revealing that the device in question is already on sale in the U.S.:

Guess the Smartphone: I’m really fast! I browse the Web, multitask and power through emails with my 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. And just a note, I’m in market in the U.S. from Motorola already. Which smartphone am I?

As for what device Motorola is teasing us with, it appears that it is none other than the Motorola ATRIX HD which is already offered by AT&T (and coming to Bell soon here in Canada).

August 2012 Motorola device announcement

Looking back at yesterday’s first hint, Motorola never does say that the device is in fact new. Chalk this one up to one of those cases where we saw what we wanted to see! As for the DROID RAZR HD, we’re now back in the dark as to when it will be announced.

It is unlikely that this upcoming device will be launched in Canada. Motorola Canada recently announced the Motorola RAZR V, Motorola ATRIX HD LTE, and Motorola DEFY PRO.

It would appear that Google has a hit tablet on its hands with the Nexus 7. While the 8GB version is still available online, Google has pulled the 16GB version, now listing as ‘coming soon.’ Finding either in a retail store also appears to be an epic effort with most reporting sell-outs as well. This said, Google has yet to provide actual numbers but has said that it is seeing “incredible demand.”

Google is now stepping up its marketing efforts with the release of its first Nexus 7 ad entitled ‘Camping:’
