Rumour: ASUS to announce Padfone 3 at MWC 2013

ASUS Padfone 2The ASUS Padfone 2 is less than six months old but Digitimes reports that ASUS will unveil the next generation of its smartphone-tablet hybrid device at MWC 2013 later this month. No details about the Padfone 3 (assuming that will be its name) were provided.

If the overall dimensions of the smartphone itself do not change, it could work with the current ASUS Padfone 2 Station, allowing ASUS to offer an alternative configuration to customers.

As for its predecessor, the Padfone 2 appears to be doing relatively well for ASUS. It is reportedly nearing global sales of 1 million units. With shipments ongoing, it should be able to surpass the million mark in the near future. Perhaps ASUS will expand availability to include North America with the next model.

The report adds that ASUS will announce the Padfone 3 alongside new smartphone models with large displays. An 11.6-inch Windows 8 tablet, the VivoTab TF810, will also be announced sometime this month (perhaps at MWC as well?).

There is little to go on here so take this with a healthy dose of skepticism for now. Let’s see if some corroborating evidence surfaces in the coming days.

Huawei to unveil Ascend P2 Mini along with Ascend P2 at MWC 2013?

Feb 022013

Huawei could announce more than two devices at its upcoming MWC 2013 press conference. Rumours so far suggest that the Chinese manufacturer will announce the Ascend P2, possibly the world’s thinnest smartphone, along with the Ascend W2, the thinnest Windows Phone 8 device. Now comes word of a third device, the Huawei Ascend P2 Mini.

As the name suggests, the Ascend P2 Mini appears to be a smaller sibling to the Ascend P2 both in terms of size and specifications. According to leaked details, it will sport a 4-inch HD (1280×720) display, 1GB of RAM, and an 8MP camera.

As for the Huawei Ascend P2, the report suggests that it will come with a 1.8GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V2 processor, a 4.7-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display (we’ve heard rumours of a 4.5- and 5-inch display in the past), a 13MP camera, and a 2,200mAh battery. It adds that it retain physical buttons and will be about 8.5 millimeters thick. If so, it can give up on its claim of world’s thinnest phone. It would also be offered in a variety of colours.

There is no word on availability and pricing. All we know is that the Ascend P2 Mini will sell for less than the Ascend P2.

Motorola X Phone specifications begin to leak?

Motorola Mobility

While rumours so far have hinted to Motorola working on a new flagship smartphone, the Motorola X Phone, that could be unveiled at Google I/O 2013, there has been little information about the specifications of the device. Fortunately, it looks like those details are now starting to emerge.

According to a PhoneArena source, Motorola is focusing on two key areas: Durability and battery life. The first will be addressed with a Kevlar chassis similar to what we have seen on other recent Motorola smartphones (like the Motorola ATRIX HD). For the latter, the Motorola X Phone could pack a battery with a capacity “in the realm of Moto’s MAXX line of handsets.” That would suggest battery with a capacity around 3,300mAh. Other specifications include a quad-core processor, a stock version of Android (Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie perhaps?), a 4.8-inch display (slightly smaller than earlier rumours suggested), a microSD card slot and online storage option that could go all the way up to 128GB. Without providing details, the camera is described as a “much better camera” and possibly with a Sony Exmor sensor.

Earlier rumours have indicated that the Motorola X Phone could go on sale on July 8th in the U.S. Verizon could offer it for US$299 with contract, a price that hopefully is for the 128GB model with cheaper options with less capacity.

If Motorola can deliver on the promise of these rumours, this could be quite the smartphone…

Rumour: HTC to follow up M7 with HTC M4 and HTC G2

HTC

HTC’s next flagship device, the HTC M7, has received a fair amount of attention ahead of its expected announcement on February 19th. It is unlikely to be the only device HTC launches in early 2013 though. Little has been heard about other HTC devices until today though. The usually reliable @evleaks now reports that HTC has two additional devices in the works. Codenamed the HTC M4 and HTC G2 (not to be confused with the earlier T-Mobile G2), they will round out HTC’s product lineup for early 2013.

With the HTC M7 being the next flagship device, the HTC M4 will hold down the mid-tier level with the HTC G2 being the new entry level model. Here is what we know so far about the HTC M4:

  • Processor: 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • Operating system: Google Android Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5.0
  • Cellular connectivity: LTE where supported
  • Display: 4.3-inch HD (1280×720)
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Storage: 16GB onboard
  • Rear-facing camera: 13MP with f/2.0 and 1080p video capture
  • Front-facing camera: 1.6MP FF
  • Battery: 1,700mAh

As for the HTC G2, its specifications clearly indicate an entry-level device:

  • Processor: 1.0GHz ARM Cortex
  • Operating system: Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Display: 3.5-inch HVGA (320×480)
  • Memory: 512MB
  • Storage: 4GB onboard and microSD cards
  • Rear-facing camera: 5MP
  • Front-facing camera: None
  • Battery: 1,400mAh

While the HTC M7 could launch within weeks of its expected announcement (perhaps as early as late February), the HTC M4 and HTC G2 are not expected to launch until the spring. They could be announced at MWC 2013 or even a bit later.

BlackBerry Q10 to launch in Canada “this spring”

BlackBerry Q10While most of the attention today was on the BlackBerry Z10 as it will be launching first, many keyboard fans are waiting for the BlackBerry Q10. Billed as “the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone with a physical keyboard,” it will launch a bit later than the BlackBerry Z10 but the exact date has yet to be announced. Fortunately, MobileSyrup was able to get BlackBerry to narrow the launch window to sometime “this spring.”

Past rumours had suggested a launch in February or about four to six week after that of the Z10. If so, we could see the Q10 sometime in early to mid-March (around the same time as the Z10 will launch in the U.S.?).

BlackBerry did not announce the full specifications of the BlackBerry Q10. It will come with a 3.1-inch AMOLED display offering a resolution of 720 by 720 pixels, the largest battery ever found in a BlackBerry smartphone, and LTE connectivity. It uses a “unique glass-weave material” that promises to be thinner and lighter, but stronger than plastic.

Pricing details not announced either.

Along with the news that the Google Nexus 4 is on sale again today (and remains available several hours later), a leaked picture suggests that a white variant may also be on the way. The image received by PhoneArena comes from an anonymous source. The white Google Nexus 4 looks identical to the black model except for the white speckled pattern and silver trim around the camera.

Rumoured Google Nexus 4 in white

The 13MP photo was taken with an LG Optimus G sometime last week if the EXIF data is to be believed. The full-size image is available from PhoneArena if you want to do some sleuthing to see if it was photoshopped.

There is no word on when the white version could be released. Will you now wait for the white version or jump on the black one?

Update: A whole gallery of pictures of the Google Nexus 4 in white have surfaced via Vietnamese website Tinhte. Here is one of them:

It appears that the white will only extend to the back and sides with the front keeping its black bezel.

HTC today sent out invitations to a press conference that will take place on February 19th in New York City. A similar event will take place in London as well. No details were given about what HTC would announce.

HTC February 19, 2013 invitation

With earlier rumours having suggested that HTC will unveil its next flagship, the HTC M7, at an event prior to MWC 2013, it looks like we know what’s on tap for the event. Then again, HTC could also surprise us with something else entirely.

The HTC M7 is expected to come with a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, Google Android Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5.0, a 4.7-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display, and a 13MP camera (possibly with a Sony IMX135 Exmor RS sensor). The fact that the event will be held in the U.S. supports rumours that the HTC M7 be headed to at least three major U.S. carriers: AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

Second-generation Google Nexus 7 to sport FHD display?

Google NexusAccording to Digitimes, Google is teaming up with ASUS again for a second generation of its Nexus 7 tablet. Recently released engineering samples suggest that the new model will feature a Full HD (1920×1080) display and thinner bezels. It adds that it will run Jelly Bean but that could be bumped to Key Lime Pie should the next major version of Android be announced before or at the same time.

The report adds that the next-generation Google Nexus 7 will be announced at Google I/O in May and will sell for the same price as current models (between US$199 and US$249). It’s not clear if the first generation models will simply be retired or continue to sell albeit at a lower price.

Total Google Nexus 7 shipments are expected to top six million units by the end of the month. With the expected second generation models, they are expected to exceed 10 million in 2013.

First components for iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 spotted?

If recent rumours are to be believed, Apple is, for the first time ever, readying to launch more than one iPhone model this year. As many as three different models could be in the works including the iPhone 5S, the iPhone Math with a larger 4.8-inch display, and a third model. Now, pictures of one of the components headed into at least two of these have allegedly surfaced. In themselves, they reveal little but their somewhat different designs suggest that there are indeed different models coming (or Apple is playing wit different prototypes).

The images obtained by French blog nowhereelse.fr show speaker components that are allegedly headed to the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6. In the image below, the iPhone 5S speaker is on the left and the iPhone 6’s on the right:

Rumoured iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 speaker component

The Apple iPhone 5S would likely be an updated version of the iPhone 5, looking quite similar to it but with upgraded components (possibly including a 12MP camera). The iPhone 6 would be a completely new version.

The report adds that the first model will launch sometime between March and July. A second one would then launch late in the year. It’s not clear from the report when the third, the iPhone Math, would be released (earlier rumours suggested it would launch along the iPhone 5S in June).

We’ll continue to follow the story and see it takes us.

Samsung

Recent rumours have hinted that Samsung is readying a refresh of its tablet lineup with new models ranging in size from 7-inches to 10.1-inches. According to information obtained by SamMobile, it is working on three models in a new Galaxy Tab 3 family of tablets but not all may see the light of day.

Most likely to launch is the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. It will be available in both Wi-Fi-only and LTE options. Samsung could also launch a Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 model but only if sales of the upcoming Galaxy Note 8.0 meet its goals. Like its larger cousin, it would come in both both Wi-Fi-only and LTE options. A Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 model has apparently been dropped.

Samsung also has a Galaxy Tab 3 Plus and a tablet known only by its Vienna codename in development. The latter could be a followup to the original Galaxy Note 10.1.

The report also provides codenames and model numbers for these tablets:

  • Galaxy Note 8.0
  • Codename: Kona
  • Model numbers: GT-N5100 / GT-N5110 (Wi-Fi) / GT-N5120 (LTE)
  • Galaxy Tab 3 7.0
  • Codename: Santos
  • Model numbers: GT-P3200 / GT-P3210 (Wi-Fi) / GT-P3220 (LTE)
  • Galaxy Tab 3 8.0
  • Codename: Santos
  • Model numbers: Unknown
  • Galaxy Tab 3 10.1
  • Codename: Santos
  • Model numbers: GT-P5200 / GT-P5210 (Wi-Fi) / GT-P5220 (LTE)
  • Galaxy Tab 3 Plus
  • Codename: Roma
  • Model numbers: GT-P8200 / GT-P8210 (Wi-Fi) / GT-P8220 (LTE)

Samsung has already confirmed that it will unveil the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 at MWC 2013. It remains to be seen if the manufacturer will also announce the Galaxy Tab 3 tablets.

Huawei Ascend P2 image leaked

Huawei has already sent out invitations to its MWC 2013 press conference. The smartphone silhouette on it suggests that the Chinese manufacturer has a few more devices to announce after unveiling the Ascend D2, Ascend Mate, and Ascend W1 last month. Among these is the Ascend P2 which is set to take on the mantle of world’s thinnest smartphone.

Rumoured Huawei Ascend P2

Along with the image, one interesting detail is revealed. The report suggests that the Ascend P2 will come with a 4.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080). Earlier rumours suggested a 5-inch HD (1280×720) IPS display along with a 1.8GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V2 processor, a 13MP AF rear camera and a 3,000mAh battery all neatly put together in a device no thicker than 6.45 millimeters. It still sounds too good to be true!

Huawei is expected to announce the Ascend W2, the thinnest Windows Phone 8 device, alongside the Ascend P2. In terms of specifications, it should be on par with the Nokia Lumia 920 or the Windows Phone 8X by HTC.

Samsung aiming to sell 10 million Galaxy S IV smartphones per month?

Samsung

The success of its Galaxy S II and Galaxy III smartphones has set the bar high for the next-generation flagship smartphone. According to Korean website Money Today, the manufacturer has set itself the goal of selling 10 million Galaxy S IV handsets per month, right from its launch.

As a comparison, it took the Samsung 50 days to ship its first ten million Galaxy S III smartphones while the Galaxy S II required five months to do so. Since then, the Galaxy S line has topped sales of 100 million units.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV (or Altius) is expected to come with a 4.99-inch FHD display, a 1.8GHz eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and optional wireless charging. It is expected to be unveiled at a Samsung Unpacked event in either March or April (although some rumours suggest a MWC announcement).

The report also adds that Samsung has a wide range of tablets in development. Aside from the already rumoured new 7-, 8-, and 10.1-inch models, we can expect to see 12-inch and 14-inch tablet models. There is no mention of an ASUS Transformer-like 13.3-inch tablet with optional QWERTY keyboard dock.

With days remaining before Research In Motion unveils its BlackBerry 10 devices, two more renders of its all-touch device have surfaced courtesy of @evleaks:

Rumoured RIM BlackBerry Z10

The BlackBerry Z10 has been leaked more than a few times and it’s quite likely to be one of the two devices that RIM will unveil on January 30th. The second is expected to be the BlackBerry X10 with physical QWERTY keyboard.

Rumours earlier today suggest that at least two Canadian carriers, Bell and TELUS, could launch the BlackBerry Z10 on February 5th for CA$650 contract-free.

Update: And here is another showing the BlackBerry Z10 in both black and white?

Bell

We are now only days from Research In Motion announcing its BlackBerry 10 smartphones. Along with the new devices, we expect to learn when they will launch and what pricing will be like. Ahead of the announcement, HowardForums has learned that Bell will launch its first BlackBerry 10 device, presumably the all-touch BlackBerry Z10 as the QWERTY-keyboard model is set to launch a bit later, on February 5th. Available in black or white, it will sell for CA$650 with no contract.

Dealers are expected to start receiving stock on January 30th, the day of the announcement itself.

A separate rumour earlier this week indicated that U.S. carriers would offer the BlackBerry Z10 for US$149 or below with a two-year contract. Canada could see it for a similar price but with a three-year contract instead.

The BlackBerry Z10 is expected to come with LTE connectivity, a 4.2-inch HD display (1280×768), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, an 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and a 1,800mAh battery.

Update: According to CrackBerry, TELUS will also launch the BlackBerry Z10 on February 5th. If the rumours are accurate, it is likely that Rogers (and possibly other carriers) would also launch on this date.
