Happy birthday: Gadgetorama turns 6

Happy birthday!

It was six years ago today that I launched Gadgetorama. Since then, 6906 posts with 1399 posts in the last year alone have covered the fast changing world of mobility and gadget news.

How things have changed since that first day: New players such as Apple and Google in the smartphone market, the arrival of netbooks (and early signs of their demise now at the hand of tablets), ever increasing wireless speeds with 3G and now 4G coming on, and the increasing digitization of content (not only music but books, TV and movies as well now). It has been quite the ride and things do not appear to be set to let up any time soon.

Thank you all for your support over the years and for making Gadgetorama a stop for your daily fix of mobility and gadget news. And now, on with the news…

Happy New Year from Gadgetorama

Happy New Year!

As festivities welcoming 2011 begin in other parts of the world, I would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year. Thank you for your ongoing support and for making Gadgetorama a regular stop for your mobile gadget news.

2010 proved to be another interesting year. Gadgetorama headquarters are still under renovations (although we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now) and life outside of Gadgetorama continues at its breakneck speed. Just keeping up with the news was a challenge at times and my ambition to do more reviews and a site redesign remain just that for now. Hopefully things will quieten down a bit in 2011 and allow me to focus more energy in these areas.

In the meantime, I will continue my Gadgetorama tradition and look at the stories I found the most interesting in 2010. CES 2010 held much promise for tablets and Apple, much as it did with the iPhone, set the standard that competitors are and will be measured against (at least for the next year or so). Will Android and webOS tablets live up to their expectation? Meanwhile, the growing influence of Canada’s new wireless players (Mobilicity, Public Mobile, Wind Mobile, and Videotron in Quebec) is slowly beginning to change the Canadian wireless landscape. How will the Big Three (Bell, Rogers, TELUS) respond in 2011? Lastly, Microsoft finally released Windows Phone 7. It’s too early to call this one but 2011 will be a critical year for it. More device differentiation and timely upgrades (not tied to the carriers and their certification processes) should help it catch up…

All in all, 2011 is shaping up to be another interesting year…

Again, thank you for all your support and Happy New Year!

It’s once again time to set aside the computer to celebrate Christmas at Gadgetorama headquarters. Before I do so, I wish everyone who visits Gadgetorama a safe and very merry Christmas and happy holidays.

News coverage will be sporadic over the next few days but will gear back up to usual speed when the holidays wrap up.

All the best to everyone and may Santa bring you those gadgets that you put on your wish list!

Gadgetorama.com outage

My apologies for the outage that took us offline for most of today. Good old DDOS attacks have been causing us some grief over the past week, causing some slowdowns a few days ago and today knocking us out completely. Very frustrating…

Hopefully we can now get back to the news without any further disruptions…

Gadgetorama turns 5

Time flies when you are having fun. Today, Gadgetorama turns five! Over that time, there have been 5507 posts with 1094 in the last year alone.

It’s quite amazing how far things have come since I started covering mobile gadgets in 2005. The first official story was about leaked pictures of the then unreleased Windows Mobile 5.0. Since then, a year later, Palm unveiled its Palm Treo 700w (with Windows Mobile 5.0). Since then on this day in history, we’ve seen double-sided LCD panels capable of displaying different images, Sony BMG abandoned DRM, and a hybrid SSD/HD netbook from MSI. Check out the archives for more if you feel like a trip down memory lane.

Welcome to all those who found Gadgetorama this year and decided to make it a regular stop. And thank you to those who have been making the stop for longer than that. And now, on to the news…

Where is the news?

Sorry for the lack of news coverage over the last few days. I’m completely swamped at work but hope to get back on track in the next few days. It’s bad enough that I’m working through Canada Day.

My apologies to all.

Announcing the newest Gadgetorama Editor-in-training

My apologies for the lack of news but the newest Gadgetorama Editor-in-training was born at 1552 Tuesday afternoon, about three weeks ahead of schedule (forcing everyone into scramble mode). Everything went well and both Mommy and he are both doing well. Christian, the other Gadgetorama Editor-in-training and now older brother, greeted Noah’s arrival with excitement and lots of jumping around.

While all this was happening, I was still trying to get over the jet lag from my trip halfway across the world and fighting off a nasty cold that I must have picked up on the flight back. It’s been a long but exciting week.

News coverage will resume shortly but probably at a bit slower pace at first as the household gets used to juggling an excitable 3-year old and the demands of a new born!

The case of the bloggers and the free Ferraris

A bit of a storm is brewing in the blogosphere today as it was revealed that a number of prominent technology bloggers have received free Acer Ferrari laptops (either the Ferrari 1000 or the 5000) courtesy of Microsoft, AMD and Acer (via PR agency Edelman). At the heart of this issue are a few questions: Should the bloggers have disclosed the “gift” or not? Will these generous gifts compromise the bloggers’ integrity as they post about their experiences with Vista? Should they keep the gifts.

As far as I’m concerned, disclosure is always good. As for whether a gift (especially a more than $2000 laptop) can sway the opinion of the blog you are reading, you will have to decide for yourselves. If you’ve been reading a particular blog for a while, you should already have a sense of how trustworthy that blog is.

Before you ask, no Ferrari laptop showed up at Gadgetorama headquarters!

Like last year, our little family is off for a little vacation in Canadian cottage country. I don’t expect to have Internet access so news coverage will resume upon our return.

See you all in a week!

Canoe trip

Before the warm weather of summer truly slips away from us, I am again taking a few days off to enjoy what should be the last camping trip of this summer. I will not have access to WiFi so there will not be any news until Monday.

It’s hard to believe but it’s already been six months since I officially launched Gadgetorama. Over 400 news items have been posted and the reviews section is starting to look a little less empty!

So what’s on tap for the next little while? More news and reviews of course but also a nicer logo and a few new site features like RSS.

Many thanks to all of you visitors and stay tuned, this is just the beginning!

Welcome to Gadgetorama! Gadgetorama will focus on news for PDAs and other cool gadgets. As I continue to set everything up, you will have noticed that I have started posting some news just to slowly get things moving forward.

So why another site about gadgets when there are so many other good ones out there? That’s easy! Working with Marc on iPAQabilities has been a lot of fun but I wanted to cover more products than just iPAQs. Marc and I had talked a lot about expanding the scope of iPAQabilities but with Marc so busy, I decided to fly solo. And here we are!

And with that, I’m off to continue to work on the site! Enjoy your stay!
