Rogers delays some Android Jelly Bean upgrades

Rogers Communications

Rogers has once again updated its OS Upgrades Schedule found on its Community Forums. All devices on the list are scheduled to receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean but ETAs for many have slipped a bit.

The Motorola RAZR HD is now slated for its update in early February (from late January). It will be followed by the Sony Xperia T (LT30a) in mid-February. Bringing up the rear are the the Samsung Galaxy S II (SGH-I727R) and Galaxy Note (SGH-I717R) with late February ETAs.

On a more positive note and just in case you have missed them somehow, the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X updates are now available.

Rogers does warn “release dates are subject to change.” There could be more changes so you will have to hang on (patiently) a bit longer. If nothing else, kudos to Rogers for updating the timelines regularly.

Sony provides update on 2012 Xperia smartphone Android 4.1 upgrade plans

Dec 172012

SonySony today provided an updated and more specific timeline as to when 2012 Xperia smartphone owners would (or would not) see Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on their devices with the usual caveat that “availability and rollout timing will vary by market and customer variants.”

First up will be the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V with upgrades set to roll during February and March. The Xperia P, Xperia J and Xperia go will follow starting in late March. The Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia ion and Xperia acro S will then follow in “the subsequent weeks.”

A number of devices will not be updated. The Xperia U, Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, and Xperia sola will all remain on Android 4.0. Sony explained that:

The quality of Xperia’s software experience is dependent on a number of factors including: screen resolution, hardware platform and RAM. In the case of Xperia go, this combination came together in a way that meant the user experience running JB was not adversely affected.

Unfortunately, in the case of Xperia tipo, Xperia miro, Xperia U and Xperia sola this wasn’t the case – so we made the decision to keep them on Ice Cream Sandwich.

It remains to be seen if and when devices will then be upgraded to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Sony has already confirmed that it will not upgrade its 2011 Xperia devices to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

List of HTC devices to be updated to Android Jelly Bean revealed?

Posted by  Comments Off on List of HTC devices to be updated to Android Jelly Bean revealed?
Dec 112012

HTCHTC has taken its time announcing which of its devices it would upgrade to Android Jelly Bean. To date, only the HTC One X and HTC One S have been confirmed. Its last update back in mid-November indicated that it was still deciding which other devices to upgrade. We may now have more information courtesy of the usually reliable @Football4PDA:

Translating codenames, we get the following list of devices:

  • HTC One XL (Evita)
  • Verizon DROID Incredible 4G (Fireball)
  • Sprint HTC EVO 4G (Jewel)
  • HTC One SV (K2)
  • HTC One VX (Totem C2)
  • HTC One S (Ville and Ville C2 variant)
  • HTC J ISW13HT (Valente)

The HTC One X+ (Evitare) also features on the list. Given that it already ships with Android 4.1, this could be an indication that it will be updated to Android 4.2 (which is also known as Jelly Bean).

It remains to be seen if HTC will add more devices to this list (assuming it is legitimate) or if it will limit itself to just these devices. Based on the fact that HTC has already confirmed that it would not upgrade devices with 512MB RAM or less, a number devices have already been eliminated but a number, including the HTC Amaze 4G, remain in limbo for now.

Motorola also expects to make a decision on upgrade plans for the Motorola RAZR V sometime soon.

It remains to be seen if Canadian MOTOROLA XOOM WiFi-Only owners will see the Android 4.1 update. It rolled out this summer south of the border but still does not appear to feature in Motorola Canada’s plans.

HTC updates Android 4.1 upgrade plans

HTCHTC has updated one of its Q&A page with additional information on its Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update plans to its devices. HTC is “actively reviewing our product portfolio to identify candidates to receive Jelly Bean” but, so far, only the HTC One X and HTC One S upgrades are confirmed.

HTC has prioritized its review process. It started with devices launched in 2012. It will then turn its attention to its 2011 devices.

As it stands, at least two devices released in 2012 will not be updated. These are the HTC One V and the HTC Desire C. HTC explains that devices with 512MB RAM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.1 as such upgrades would not deliver an “optimal user experience.” HTC does make clear that these devices will still get software improvements, security fixes, and technical support as required.

HTC added that Android 4.1 upgrades will include HTC Sense 4+.

Timelines are also vague with HTC warning that carrier certifications may also delay deployments further.

The deployment will be done in phases starting today. No ETA was given as to when all customers will have been upgraded though. Customers will also be able to manually download the update starting sometime next week.

Motorola MobilityMotorola Mobility last month confirmed that most of its 2011 smartphones would be upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Those that would not be would instead be eligible in the U.S. for a US$100 credit towards a new Motorola smartphone. The company has now updated its upgrade lists to indicate which devices will be upgraded and which will not.

First up, the devices that will receive the upgrade include the recently announced DROID RAZR M, RAZR HD, and RAZR Maxx HD which will all be upgraded by the end of the year. The ATRIX HD, Photon Q, Eletrify 2, DROID RAZR, DROID RAZR MAXX, DROID 4, and DROID Bionic will also be upgraded but timelines are not provided.

With Motorola having changed its mind on a few devices already, it still leaves the door open to additional ones with the warning that “all dates and status subject to change.”

A total of 13 devices will not be upgraded and will be eligible for the rebate. Among those are the Atrix 4G, Atrix 2, Photon 4G, DROID 3, Milestone 3, and others. The rebate can be applied towards the purchase of a ATRIX HD, DROID RAZR HD, DROID RAZR M, DROID RAZR MAXX HD, MOTOROLA ELECTRIFY 2, Electrify 2, or Photon Q.
