The rumoured Apple iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 are the topic of rumour again. According to a post on the Chinese Sina Weibo microblogging site, both devices were apparently spotted at an Apple supplier in China. Pictures were not allowed for fear that they would later be leaked (fancy that!).

According to the person who saw both devices, the iPhone 5S is described as very similar to the iPhone 5 while the iPhone 6 is wider, longer and thinner. The Google translation is not very clear but appears to suggest that the iPhone 6 could sport a 5-inch display. Past rumours have indicated that Apple was working on a new iPhone with a larger display. Could the iPhone 6 be none other than the mysterious “iPhone Math” with its 4.8-inch display?

The report adds that both devices should launch this year but gives no specific details. Earlier rumours have suggested that the iPhone 5S may come out in the March-July timeframe with a second model to follow later in the year. Apple could also release a third model but was not mentioned in this latest rumour.

First components for iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 spotted?

If recent rumours are to be believed, Apple is, for the first time ever, readying to launch more than one iPhone model this year. As many as three different models could be in the works including the iPhone 5S, the iPhone Math with a larger 4.8-inch display, and a third model. Now, pictures of one of the components headed into at least two of these have allegedly surfaced. In themselves, they reveal little but their somewhat different designs suggest that there are indeed different models coming (or Apple is playing wit different prototypes).

The images obtained by French blog show speaker components that are allegedly headed to the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6. In the image below, the iPhone 5S speaker is on the left and the iPhone 6’s on the right:

The Apple iPhone 5S would likely be an updated version of the iPhone 5, looking quite similar to it but with upgraded components (possibly including a 12MP camera). The iPhone 6 would be a completely new version.

The report adds that the first model will launch sometime between March and July. A second one would then launch late in the year. It’s not clear from the report when the third, the iPhone Math, would be released (earlier rumours suggested it would launch along the iPhone 5S in June).

We’ll continue to follow the story and see it takes us.

Apple iPhone 5S to come in different screen sizes and colours?

Jan 082013

CES 2013 may be in full swing but there’s always time for some new Apple rumours. Two different reports point to Apple possibly offering a number of different iPhone models in 2013. Along with a new low-cost model for emerging markets, the next iPhone, likely to be called the Apple iPhone 5S, could offer users a choice of screen size and colour.

Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White reports that his “checks” with Apple suppliers suggests that Apple will take a different approach with the next iPhone model. He expects “more choices for customers,” including “more color patterns and screen sizes.” Much like the current iPod touch, the new iPhone will come in multiple colours, perhaps as many as eight. “In our view, the iPhone 5 unibody aluminum case is a work of art and we believe it would be even more popular with the ability for consumers to choose from a wide array of vibrant colors that only Apple can deliver,” he writes.

Perhaps more important is the suggestion that Apple will, for the first time, offer different screen sizes for a single model. The move would allow Apple “to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach.” The report adds that one of those sizes would be larger than the iPhone 5’s 4-inch display. Another would be smaller and would allow Apple to grow its reach in emerging markets including China and India.

According to Digitimes and its “supply-chain sources,” Apple will in fact take a different route for the iPhone 5S. They report that the low-cost model would sport a larger display to meet the “prevailing trend for the adoption of 5-inch displays for high-end models” and a new exterior design.

It’s not the first time that there have been rumours about multiple colours for the next iPhone. It was suggested in December that it would come with a “super HD” display and camera, NFC support, and a better battery.

AppleApple may not wait a full year before launching its next iPhone. According to Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek, Apple could launch the iPhone 5S as early as next June.

The report adds that the iPhone 5S will come with a “super HD” display and camera, NFC support, and a better battery. It will be available in between 6 and 8 colours much as the iPod touch already does.

The Apple iPhone 5S rumours began last month with a report that volume production could begin in Q1 2013 for a mid-2013 launch. Last week, an alleged image of the new iPhone also surfaced.

The report also notes that Misek has made “a lot of bad predictions about Apple TV,” suggesting that this could another such prediction.

Despite the Apple iPhone 5 having launched only last September, rumours are already floating about that Apple will soon release a follow-up smartphone, the iPhone 5S. The name suggests a very similar device with only a number of relatively minor component upgrades. Now, images of the device have surfaced courtesy of ETradeSupply.

According to the site, two signs suggest that this is not the iPhone 5 but a new design. Not only is product information below the logo replaced by a series of x’s but the number of screws used and screw positioning is also different.

The possibility that these are older pictures, possibly iPhone 5 prototypes, cannot be ruled out either.

Past rumours have suggested that Apple could launch the iPhone 5S in “mid-2013.”

Next-generation iPad and iPhone coming mid-2013?

AppleRumours last week suggested that Apple would launch its next iPhone smartphone (the iPhone 5S?) and iPad tablet as early as the first half of 2013. These gained steam today with a report by Digitimes that “market observers” expected many of Apple’s component suppliers to see rising component orders starting in late Q1, suggesting that Apple could unveil its next-generation iPad and iPhone devices as early as mid-2013.

The report suggests that Apple could be looking to accelerate its release cycles. It launched the iPhone 5 in September and the fourth-generation iPad in October along with the new iPad mini [product information]. The faster releases may help it better compete against competitors such as Samsung which refresh their device lineups more often. It may also simply be looking to spread out its release schedule instead of having a very busy fall release cycle this past September and October.

The report sheds no light on what we can expect to see with the new iPhone or iPad. If Apple is working on the iPhone 5S, it may be a very similar device with only a number of relatively minor component upgrades.

The report also indicates that both contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and packager Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) are now on Apple’s list of suppliers.

If nothing else, the iPhone and iPad rumours were not dormant for long!

Apple to launch iPhone 5S in mid-2013?

Nov 122012

AppleApple may launch a new iPhone model as soon as early next year. According to the Chinese-language China Times, Apple will introduce a new iPhone along with a new iPad, and Apple TV device sometime in the first half of the year. The iPhone 5S could launch first and be followed by a new iPad about a quarter later.

Production of the iPhone 5S could start sometime in December with initial runs of between 50,000 and 100,000 units. Volume production would then follow sometime in Q1 2013.

Little is known about the iPhone 5S but if Apple follows past naming patterns, the new S model will come with a number of small component upgrades but will sport the same design as the Apple iPhone 5.

Production challenges of its current iPhone 5 and iPads appears to be the reason that Apple is accelerating the certification and deployment of new devices.
