BlackBerry Z10

BlackBerry looks to be getting ready to launch its first OS update for BlackBerry 10. One of the first carriers that could see the update could be TELUS Mobility. According to the latest edition of its “Upcoming software updates schedule,” the BlackBerry Z10 will be upgraded to BlackBerry 10.1 starting sometime in March.

The update schedule shows a status of “Testing pending.” This may indicate that TELUS has yet to receive the update and put it through its certification process. If so, a late March release may be more likely than an early one.

Unfortunately, there is no information just yet on what Z10 users can expect from BlackBerry 10.1. At the very least, it will be a maintenance release that will address some of the bugs that have surfaced since the smartphone’s launch earlier this month.

TELUS warns that “all dates are subject to change.” We’ll have to check back regularly to see whether the update remains on schedule.

BlackBerry Z10 launch described as “best day ever” for BlackBerry

BlackBerry Z10BlackBerry appears to be quite pleased with yesterday’s BlackBerry Z10 launch. In short statement issued today, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins called yesterday the “best day ever” for the launch of a BlackBerry smartphone in Canada. Here is the full statement:

“In Canada, yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone. In fact, it was more than 50% better than any other launch day in our history in Canada,” said Thorsten Heins, President & CEO of BlackBerry. “In the UK, we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone.”

The statement does not make specific mention of any sales figures.

For its part, Rogers added that it “sold more BlackBerry smartphones on February 5th 2013 than any other day in Rogers history” and activated “activated thousands of BlackBerry Z10 smartphones yesterday.”

It appears that BlackBerry’s BlackBerry 10 launch is off to an auspicious start.

BlackBerry’s Super Bowl ad focused on what BlackBerry 10 could not do and only a mere hint of what to expect from its new operating system. With the launch of its new “Keep Moving” ad campaign, BlackBerry’s new ad gives users the first glimpse on what it can do.

Meet the new BlackBerry Z10: The first full touchscreen device for BlackBerry 10 and, according to CEO Thorsten Heins, “the most beautiful BlackBerry we have ever launched.” BlackBerry Z10 features the ability to turn back time when editing photos, house all of your messages in the BlackBerry Hub and balance all of your work and personal information in one device.

This first ad is packed with features, briefly showing off BlackBerry Hub, Camera Time Shift and the BlackBerry 10 Keyboard among others.

All in all, a much better ad than the Super Bowl one.

Just before a power outage halted the Super Bowl just as the second half was getting underway, BlackBerry’s BlackBerry Z10 ad aired. The 30 second ad focused on a few things that BlackBerry 10 cannot do, explaining those colourful puffs of smoke and bouncing yellow rubber ducks:

The ad was a one-time deal and will not feature in BlackBerry’s upcoming Keep Moving ad campaign which gets underway February 4th.

Was the ad everything you expected and more? Or the opposite?

With BlackBerry 10 having officially launched this week alongside the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10, the BlackBerry marketing machine is in high gear to get the word out. Part of its marketing blitz includes a 30 second ad that will air during tomorrow’s Super Bowl. Yesterday, it teased us with an image from the ad and it’s doing it again today with a new one:

Clouds of smoke, bouncing balls, whatever BlackBerry has in mind, it promises to be colourful. Hopefully it will also be clever and catchy! Fortunately, with the game only a day away, we will not have to wait too long to see the ad revealed in its entirety.

BlackBerry will be among the companies putting down millions of dollars to have their BlackBerry 10 ad run during the Super Bowl on Sunday February 3rd. It took to Twitter today to post a teaser of what the ad will be about:

Any thoughts on what the 30-second ad will be about? It promises to be colourful if nothing else. And an appearance by the new BlackBerry Z10 (and perhaps even a Q10) should not be ruled out.

Here’s hoping that BlackBerry has come up with a clever and catchy ad!

The contents of the box were not revealed. Aside from the smartphone itself, it will likely contain the battery, a charger and USB cable, earbuds and the usual manuals (quick start guide and warranty).

With days remaining before Research In Motion unveils its BlackBerry 10 devices, two more renders of its all-touch device have surfaced courtesy of @evleaks:

Rumoured RIM BlackBerry Z10

The BlackBerry Z10 has been leaked more than a few times and it’s quite likely to be one of the two devices that RIM will unveil on January 30th. The second is expected to be the BlackBerry X10 with physical QWERTY keyboard.

Rumours earlier today suggest that at least two Canadian carriers, Bell and TELUS, could launch the BlackBerry Z10 on February 5th for CA$650 contract-free.

Update: And here is another showing the BlackBerry Z10 in both black and white?

Bell

We are now only days from Research In Motion announcing its BlackBerry 10 smartphones. Along with the new devices, we expect to learn when they will launch and what pricing will be like. Ahead of the announcement, HowardForums has learned that Bell will launch its first BlackBerry 10 device, presumably the all-touch BlackBerry Z10 as the QWERTY-keyboard model is set to launch a bit later, on February 5th. Available in black or white, it will sell for CA$650 with no contract.

Dealers are expected to start receiving stock on January 30th, the day of the announcement itself.

A separate rumour earlier this week indicated that U.S. carriers would offer the BlackBerry Z10 for US$149 or below with a two-year contract. Canada could see it for a similar price but with a three-year contract instead.

The BlackBerry Z10 is expected to come with LTE connectivity, a 4.2-inch HD display (1280×768), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, an 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and a 1,800mAh battery.

Update: According to CrackBerry, TELUS will also launch the BlackBerry Z10 on February 5th. If the rumours are accurate, it is likely that Rogers (and possibly other carriers) would also launch on this date.

RIM BlackBerry

With a little over a week to go before Research In Motion launched BlackBerry 10, BGR has landed new details about the pricing of the BlackBerry Z10 all-touch device. If accurate, it appears that RIM and its U.S. carrier partners will offer it for US$149 or below with a two-year contract. That could translate to about the same here in Canada but likely with a three-year contract.

BGR has also obtained from a “close source” about 100 screenshots of the BlackBerry 10 operating system in full detail. It’s a comprehensive overview that covers everything from device setup including an introduction to its gestures, the BlackBerry Hub and built-in apps, and the Siri-like voice assistant. Here is just three of them:

RIM will unveil its BlackBerry 10 devices on January 30th at a series of worldwide events, including Toronto and New York.

Here is what is revealed:

  • Operating system: RIM BlackBerry 10
  • Cellular connectivity: LTE (three variants) or 21Mbps HSPA+ (one variant)
  • Other connectivity: GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC
  • Display: 4.2-inch HD (1280×768)
  • Memory: 2GB RAM

  • Front-facing camera: 2MP with 720p video capture

Missing from these specifications is the processor powering the BlackBerry Z10. Past rumours have suggested a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (except perhaps for the London HSPA+ variant). Otherwise, they line up well for the most part with what we have seen in the past.
