BlackBerry 7 devices delayed due to RIM focus on PlayBook?

Research In Motion

BGR.com is reporting that RIM may delay the launch of its upcoming BlackBerry 7 devices. The just announced BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 may only launch in mid-August rather than June has some unconfirmed reports had suggested. Other BlackBerry 7 devices (including the rumoured BlackBerry Torch 2 and BlackBerry Touch) may not get announced until mid-October at RIM’s DevCon conference.

The delays are being attributed to a “disproportionate” reallocation of resources to the PlayBook. Not only are new tablet models featuring 3G and 4G connectivity expected but RIM is apparently also looking to release a 10-inch model this year to broaden appeal for its tablets. It’s likely that OS updates are also consuming a fair amount of manpower.

Senior management is apparently quite displeased so we will have to see if RIM can somehow redress this situation.

RIM sells 50,000 PlayBooks on first day?

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook

Initial estimates suggest that Research In Motion sold about 50,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks on launch day, a figure that includes pre-orders. While RIM has yet to provide any numbers, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky came up with the estimate by checking with about 70 retail locations.

While these figures are a pale comparison to Apple iPad 2 sales, Abramsky notes that “the launch appears to have been stronger than the launch of Motorola’s Xoom (Android) Tablet, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab.” He also expects that RIM could ship about 500,000 PlayBooks during this fiscal quarter.

Abramsky points out that RIM must address a number of issues to improve sales. Among those is the fact that AT&T is still testing the BlackBerry Bridge app, and growing the number of apps available for the device.

BlackBerry OS7 to combine best features of QNX and OS6.1?

Research In Motion

N4BB.com has landed some details about the upcoming BlackBerry 7 operating system. The upcoming OS was one of the topics in a keynote delivered by David Yach, RIM’s Software Chief Technology Officer at an internal RIM RDX conference.

It appears that BlackBerry 7 will be a combination of the best features of both QNX and BlackBerry 6.1. It will also be RIM’s first OS to be used on both PlayBooks and BlackBerry devices. The project is codenamed “Highlander,” apparently a reference to the movie of the same name where “there can be only one.”

BlackBerry 7 is currently in the “early stages” of development. RIM is looking to have it out sometime in 2012.

Meanwhile, it appears that BlackBerry 6.1 is falling behind schedule due to “miscommunication between teams in the critical path of the project.” BlackBerry 6.1, based on an OS now almost 10 years old, is pushing the limits of what can be done and a number of unspecified features could disappear. One new feature called “Liquid Graphics” promises to add some ‘wow’ to the platform though.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9780

A leaked inventory system screenshot obtained by BGR suggests that the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9780 is headed to WIND Mobile. Considering that the carrier offers the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and that the 9780 is its successor, the move is not a huge surprise.

There is no word on exactly when WIND Mobile will announce the BlackBerry Bold 9780 but it is expected to be fairly soon (early next year?).

Skyfire halts BlackBerry Alpha program

Earlier today, Skyfire announced that it was halting its private Alpha program for the BlackBerry. The decision was made after the program was leaked by a participant who was under NDA.

Our intention with this Alpha was to get some early feedback under NDA with a limited number of BlackBerry Bold users – all under NDA during this early dev phase. We know that we have lots more work ahead of us, so we intentionally limited the number of participants as well as the development to the Bold model. Needless to say, this leak was not conducive to the intent of our Alpha.

It appears that the leaked alpha has traveled far already. It was used on Curves, Storms and other BlackBerry models for which this alpha version was not intended.

In a communication to the alpha testers, Skyfire indicated that a new build would be ready in a few weeks. Until then, the servers will be unavailable and the current application will not work.
