Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass and the newer Gorilla Glass 2, yesterday announced Willow Glass, an ultra-slim flexible glass. Just how thin is it? About 100 microns thick or about the thickness of a sheet of copy paper. Combined with its flexibility, Willow Glass to be “wrapped” around a device or structure and could “revolutionize the shape and form of next-generation consumer electronic technologies.”

“Displays become more pervasive each day and manufacturers strive to make both portable devices and larger displays thinner. Corning Willow Glass provides the substrate performance to maintain device quality in a thin and light form factor,” said Dr. Dipak Chowdhury, division vice president and Willow Glass program director.

As promised, Corning yesterday unveiled its Gorilla Glass 2, the next generation of its damage-resistant cover glass for consumer electronic devices. Up to 20 percent thinner, it promises to be as tough and resistant to scratches as the original Gorilla Glass.

The thinner Gorilla Glass 2 enables slimmer and sleeker devices, brighter images, and greater touch sensitivity. These benefits can provide electronics manufacturers with superior design flexibility as they address consumer demand for increasingly high-performing, touch-sensitive, and durable mobile devices.

One class of devices that will benefit from this new glass will be Windows PCs (presumably laptops and ultrabooks). But there is no word yet on exactly what device will be the first to sport Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2.

Gorilla Glass was first unveiled in 2007 and has been used in more than 575 devices, spanning more than 500 million units worldwide.
