Has Google sold 1 million Nexus 4 smartphones?

Google Nexus 4Google Nexus 4 sales may just have topped one million units. The announcement comes not from Google or LG but from xda-developers where some enterprising forum users developed a formula that lets them to estimate how many smartphones have been manufactured based on crowd-sourced IMEI numbers. It so happens that a recent submission suggests that the million unit milestone has been reached. According to forum user draugaz who has been tracking the numbers:

Ladies and gentlemen, we have just reached the millionth device!

(of course just judging by serial number, i.e. minus gaps)

ATURBK 302KPSL999998 20130205 TURKEY

Which means, IMEI prefix 35391805* is now officially complete and the next one will be started.

The same tool has been used to estimate production run totals by month. The results show that from a run of 70,000 in October, LG has ramped production up to 550,000 or more in January.

Considering that the Google Nexus 4 has been sold out more often than available and that it only went on sale just over two months ago, the million unit milestone is pretty impressive. With production volumes catching up to demand and availability being expanded to carriers (Videotron and WIND Mobile now offer it in Canada), we may be hearing about new sales milestones in the near future.

Remember the days when the Google Nexus 4 was the most elusive of smartphones? Well, no more. Fido today became the latest Canadian carrier to launch the latest Google Nexus smartphone. It follows Videotron and WIND Mobile who made similar announcements recently.

Your best bet might be to check with your local Fido store in person. Earlier today, Fido’s website showed that shipments would start today but also indicated that it was currently out of stock. If you check back now, it is not even listed anymore and the page instead says “Sorry, the device you are looking for is not available.”

It’s not clear at this time when Fido will put the Google Nexus 4 back up on its website. It had promised an “early February” availability in late January.

As for pricing, if what was shown earlier today holds true, it will sell for CA$100 with a two-year contract or CA$425 outright.

Along with the news that the Google Nexus 4 is on sale again today (and remains available several hours later), a leaked picture suggests that a white variant may also be on the way. The image received by PhoneArena comes from an anonymous source. The white Google Nexus 4 looks identical to the black model except for the white speckled pattern and silver trim around the camera.

Rumoured Google Nexus 4 in white

The 13MP photo was taken with an LG Optimus G sometime last week if the EXIF data is to be believed. The full-size image is available from PhoneArena if you want to do some sleuthing to see if it was photoshopped.

There is no word on when the white version could be released. Will you now wait for the white version or jump on the black one?

Update: A whole gallery of pictures of the Google Nexus 4 in white have surfaced via Vietnamese website Tinhte. Here is one of them:

It appears that the white will only extend to the back and sides with the front keeping its black bezel.

Despite LG’a assurances that there are no production issues, the Google Nexus 4 has remained sold out at the Google Play Store pretty much since it launched except for a few short periods of frenzied buying action. If you are still looking to get your hands on one and live in Quebec, you may be in luck soon. A banner on the Videotron is proclaiming today that the regional carrier will soon carry it:

Videotron Google Nexus 4 coming soon

Videotron could well become the first Canadian carrier to offer the latest Google Nexus smartphone. It is hopefully a sign that other carriers are also gearing up to offer it in the near future.

Videotron has not provided specific availability and pricing details yet.

LG denies Google Nexus 4 availability issues

Google Nexus 4The Google Nexus 4 remains an elusive smartphone. Despite remaining sold out in both Canada and the U.S., LG indicates that production is on track. An LG Electronics spokesperson told the Korean Chosun Ilbo that production at the Pyeongtaek factory is proceeding “without a hitch” and that “there is no problem in supply.”

The report contradicts earlier an earlier statement that confirmed that LG was struggling to meet the “huge demand.” For its part, Google has described the supply situation as being “scarce and erratic.”

As far as consumers are concerned, it looks like the Google Nexus 4 will remain as scarce as it has been so far. Worse, it does not appear that the situation will improve any time soon.

The Google Nexus 4 is the subject of two new ads, one each from Google and LG. Google’s ad focuses on Photo Sphere, a feature introduced in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. LG’s ad is more encompassing, showing different people using the smartphone for different purposes by using different tools including Photo Sphere, Google Now, Wi-Fi Display, and Android Beam. The latter also features a number of shots of the reflective pattern on the back of the smartphone.

Now, if Google and LG could only do something about those scarce and erratic” supplies and get these in the hands of all the people wanting one…

Google describes Nexus 4 supply as “scarce and erratic”

Google Nexus 4Since the Google Nexus 4 smartphone went on sale in mid-November, it has been out of stock far more often than it has been in stock. LG, its manufacturer, has already confirmed that it is struggling to meet the “huge demand.” Google UK & Ireland Managing Director Dan Cobley has now taken to Google+ to offer both an apology and a few more details.

Cobley describes supply from LG as being “scarce and erratic” and called Google’s own communications about the issue “failures” before providing an apology.

Dear all, I know that what you are going through is unacceptable and we are all working through the nights and weekends to resolve this issue. Supplies from the manufacturer are scarce and erratic, and our communication has been flawed.

I can offer an unreserved apology for our service and communication failures in this process.

I am optimistic that we will be able to share some positive news shortly, but I do not want to cause any more disappointment by making a commitment until we are 100% sure we can deliver on it.

Cobley added Google will issue a shipping refund to customers whose orders did nt ship in the promised 3 to 5 day window. Hopefully we will see the overall supply issue improve quickly as well.

Google Nexus 4LG has confirmed what many had predicted: It is struggling to keep up with the demand for the Google Nexus 4 [product information]. Not only did it sell out in minutes on its debut on November 13th but it has remained difficult to find since then. The Google Play Store continues to sell out of it in mere hours (including Canada) wherever it is is made available again.

Asked about the Nexus 4 stock situation, Andy Coughlin, the head of mobile at LG UK, told CNET UK that the phone “had proven extremely popular, and as such retailers have been met with huge demand”. LG’s Korean headquarters added that Google underestimated initial demand for its latest Nexus smartphone, explaining why Google so quickly sold out of its initial supply.

LG is working with Google to address the demand. “We are working closely with Google to ensure that those who wish to purchase a handset are able to do so,” he said.

Neither Google nor LG have given any timelines as to when they expect supply to catch up for demand for the Google Nexus 4. Nor have they provided any specific figures for either the first dale of sales or cumulatively.
