Google begins pushing out Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1.2 update

Galaxy NexusSince releasing Android 4.1.2 last week, Google has begun to release Android 4.1.2 factory images. The first was for the Google Nexus 7 and it was quickly followed by additional ones for some of the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S smartphones. Now attention has turned to device updates.

The rollout for the Nexus 7 kicked off last week (although there is no sign of it here at Gadgetorama HQ). Now, another has started for the Galaxy Nexus, albeit only for the international and Google Play versions (yakju and takju builds) at this point. Canadians (as well as users of the U.S. CDMA version) who have bought their Galaxy Nexus from a carrier will need to be patient (they just got 4.1.1 last month) or look at converting their software from the yakjuux version to yakju (not impossible but not so simple either).

There are also some reports that the GSM Nexus S (soju version) is also getting the update.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update now hitting Google Nexus S in Canada

Australia’s Vodafone Google Nexus S owners may have to wait a bit longer for their Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrades but it has landed in Canada. After a 1MB update that updated the Android 4.0.4 build number of my trusty Nexus S from IMM76D to IMM76M but seemingly little else earlier today, the Android 4.1.1 update followed shortly after (about 1 hour later).

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on Google Nexus S

I’ll try to post a few first impressions about Jelly Bean this weekend. For what it’s worth, the upgrade was buttery smooth…

Anyone else seeing the update?

Update: Google has confirmed via Google+ that it has begun the update:

We’ve started rolling out Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, to Nexus S phones on a number of carriers including T-Mobile, H3G, O2, Rogers as well as Vodafone in most countries, with more to come.

As far as Canadian carriers, you can add TELUS to that list

Vodafone Australia halts Google Nexus S Android 4.1 update

Google Nexus SWas it too good to be true? News broke yesterday that Vodafone Australia had approved the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Google Nexus S and that updates would start today. With only hours to go, Vodafone has now postponed the update.

A blog post explains that the delay is due to “a software issue.” As a result, the update “does not meet all the Australian regulatory requirements related to emergency calls.”

Vodafone does not have a new release date yet.

Given that the issue is specific to Australia, it should not affect unlocked devices or devices in other regions. But given that Google itself (or any other carrier for that matter) has yet to say much on the matter, it appears unlikely that the update will move forward today at all (but I’ll gladly be wrong on this one).

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to land on Google Nexus S starting July 19th?

Google AndroidAside from the Google Nexus 7 which has Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preinstalled, only a handful of devices are so far confirmed to be receiving an upgrade to the latest version of Android (although that is likely to increase over the next few months). So far, the upgrade has begun for the Galaxy Nexus but it may be joined by the Google Nexus S sooner than many had expected.

In a blog post covering upcoming software updates, Vodafone Australia lists teh following for the Google Nexus S:

Approved by Vodafone, roll out by Google scheduled for 1:00pm AEST, 19th July 2012. Keep an eye on our blog for further information.

A quick time conversion indicates that 13:00 AEST is 23:00 ET.

Note that this does not mean that all Nexus S devices will suddenly see the update tomorrow. Most likely the update will be staggered possibly over a few weeks. But it is coming and coming soon…

The only other devices so far to have confirmed Android 4.1 are the ASUS Transformer Pad TF201, TF300, and TF700 tablets. HTC and other manufacturers are also evaluating their upgrade plans.

Good news! The much anticipated Android 4.0.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Nexus S smartphones and Motorola XOOM tablet has begun to arrive on Canadian devices. I’ve received a few reports that users have now received the upgrade on their Nexus devices (no word on XOOM updates so far). The Gadgetorama HQ’s trusty Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S both showed “currently up to date” until today when I took matters into my own hands and forced a checkin (by dialing *#*#2432546#*#*).

Lo and behold if the upgrade did not show up for the Google Nexus S. Sadly, not as much luck with the Galaxy Nexus so far.

Android 4.0.4 on Google Nexus S

Hopefully everyone’s patience will soon be rewarded…

Let us know below if you have received the update on any of these…

Google AndroidSo much for those Android 4.0.5 rumours. Google today announced that it has begun to push out Android 4.0.4 to some models of the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and Motorola XOOM tablets.

Some of you will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich for the first time, while others will be receiving an update to your existing Ice Cream Sandwich experience with stability improvements, better camera performance, smoother screen rotation, improved phone number recognition and more.

The rollout applies to the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, UMTS/GSM Nexus S and Xoom Wi-Fi tablet. More devices will receive the update “in the coming weeks.”

Android 4.0 coming to Google Nexus S in “next few weeks”?

Google Nexus SThere may be some good news for Nexus S owners still waiting for their promised Android 4.0 upgrades. Engadget is today reporting that one of their “trusted sources” has confirmed that the official Android 4.0 update is expected “to drop in the next few weeks.” Both the 9020A and 9020T (AWS) versions of the software are expected.

Google had originally promised to released the Nexus S Android 4.0 update only weeks after the release of the Galaxy Nexus. It did start to push the update out in December but quickly stopped after reports began to came in about battery issues. Since then, there has been little information from Google about when it would resume the updates for the device.

It remains to be seen if the update will consist of the current 4.0.3 base version or if it will sport a newer version.

Nexus S Android 4.0 upgrade being pushed to Google employees

If now deleted Google Plus posts are any indication, Google has pushed out an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to its employees using Google Nexus S smartphones. At least one employee, Adel Saoud, reported getting the OTA update after the news was broken by Adnan Hodzic. If true, Google is likely testing the deployment with its employees before rolling out to its wider customer base.

Android 4.0 pushed to Google employees' Nexus S?

The Google Nexus S is likely to be the first smartphone to get the update. Manufacturers (including HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung) who have announced updates for their devices are likely to not push out their updates until early 2012 at the earliest. It remains to be seen if Nexus S owners will see it in 2011 but Google had promised it “a couple of weeks after” the release of the Galaxy Nexus.

Google AndroidDuring an interview at the AsiaD: All Things Digital conference now taking place in Hong Kong, Andy Rubin answered one of the biggest questions to follow the Android 4.0 announcement: When will it be available for current devices? Rubin answered that an upgrade would follow “a couple of weeks after” the release of the Galaxy Nexus.

The first device to get the upgrade will be the Google Nexus S. Google’s Gabe Cohen and Matias Duarte also expect that the update should work for any device currently running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) but no specific schedules were provided.

Rubin also confirmed that Android 4.0 will go open source around the same time that the first updates are released.

Google Nexus SAs promised, Google has released an Android update with a fix for a Voice Search bug that affected the Google Nexus S. It’s unclear what other fixes and enhancements there could be in the update:

This OTA update will upgrade your device to Gingerbread 2.3.6. It contains important bug fixes and security patches.

As Google points out, it may still take a few days for the update to be deployed to everyone. If you’re impatient (like me), you can do a *#*#checkin#*#* to check if the update is available. It worked for me and my Nexus S is now running Android 2.3.6 (Build number GRK39C, baseband I9020AUCKF1)

Fix for Google Nexus S Voice Search bug coming this week

Posted by  Comments Off on Fix for Google Nexus S Voice Search bug coming this week
Aug 312011

Google Nexus SAn issue plaguing some Google Nexus S owners may soon be put to rest. The bug sees Google Voice activate at random and often lock out controls. Google promised a fix “soon” back in early June but it has yet to materialize.

There may finally be some good news though. On a forum discussion thread tracking the issue, Paul, a Google employee, has indicated that the fix could be pushed out this week:

Update to my post on August 19: We plan to release an over-the-air update this week which includes a fix for this bug. I’ll post again once the OTA starts.

As I write this, I have not seen the OTA update materialize yet and there are no further post updates giving more specific release details.

Fix coming soon for Google Nexus S Voice Search bug

Google Nexus S

Google on Friday announced that it has identified the cause of an issue where Voice Search will activate at random times and often lock out controls on the Google Nexus S. I’ve had the issue on my Nexus S (running Android 2.3.4) and each time it has happened, I had to reboot it. According to Paul, a Google employee:

“Good news – we’ve identified the source of this problem which is entirely software based. We’re developing a fix which we can deploy with an over-the-air update. I don’t have a timeline for when that’ll happen yet, but when it’s ready I’ll let you know.”

Fingers crossed we will not have to wait too long…

Remember those rumours that Samsung would soon announce the Nexus Two? Samsung’s press event came and went this week with no Nexus Two in sight. Samsung has gone as far as dismissing these but additional rumours then surfaced suggesting that a recently identified hardware issue had delayed the November launch.

More evidence has surfaced today in the form of a reference to the Google Nexus S coming to T-Mobile. The reference appeared briefly on the Best Buy website but has now disappeared. Details are few but it appears that it will be sold exclusively through Best Buy sometime this holiday season.

The Google Nexus S / Two will reportedly be the first device to ship with Android Gingerbread (version 2.3?).
