HTC has posted a teaser image ahead of next week’s Mobile World Congress. The tagline “This Sunday you’ll discover something fast” accompanies a smartphone silhouette with the number 5 on it.

HTC MWC 2012 teaser

As for what the 5 represents, it could be any number of things. Is it a reference to the five cores in the Tegra 3 processor that is expected to power the HTC One X/Endeavor? 5 phones to be unveiled? Or perhaps simply that there are now five days until HTC’s event (scheduled for Sunday, February 26th). Any other theories out there?

The HTC Endeavor was formerly known as the HTC Edge and it now appears to be headed for another name change. PocketNow has learned that it could be launched (likely at Mobile World Congress) as the HTC One X or HTC OneX.

Meanwhile, a second report supports earlier rumours about the HTC Endeavor’s specifications. MoDaCo‘s source confirms that details leaked earlier are correct and adds a few more to complete the picture:

  • Processor: 1.5GHz quad-core Nvidia AP33 Tegra 3
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.0 with HTC Sense 4.0
  • Cellular connectivity: 21Mbps HSDPA
  • Other connectivity: A-GPS, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC
  • Display: 4.7-inch HD (720 x 1280) S-LCD 2
  • Input: Capacitive touchscreen
  • Memory: 1GB RAM
  • Storage: 32GB internal / No microSD card slot
  • Rear-facing camera: 8MP with f/2.2 lens, backlit sensor and 1080p video capture

  • Battery: 1,800mAh
  • Dimensions: 8.8 millimeters thick with unibody design

MoDaCo adds that the buttons seen on leaked images have been replaced by capacitive ones typical of an Android 4.0 device. The only physical buttons will be the power button and volume rocker. It will also have a dual-colour (green and amber) LED notification rather than a multi-colour one like on the Galaxy Nexus.

The dual-core HTC Ville looks set to be launched as the One S alongside the HTC One X/Endeavor/Edge.

HTCHTC appears set to follow in Motorola’s footsteps and reduce the number of smartphones it will release in 2012. Rumours have already hinted at this but it has now been confirmed by HTC UK chief Phil Roberson. In 2012, HTC will focus on a smaller number of higher-specifications devices. In an interview with Mobile Today, Roberson said:

“We have to get back to focusing on what made us great – amazing hardware and a great customer experience. We ended 2011 with far more products than we started out with. We tried to do too much.

So 2012 is about giving our customers something special. We need to make sure we do not go so far down the line that we segment our products by launching lots of different SKUs.”

The move will allow HTC to focus its efforts (marketing, development, etc) on fewer devices. It should also offer a less confusing product catalog to customers.

While not exiting the market completely, HTC is also slowing down its tablet projects. This suggests that HTC may not unveil its rumoured quad-core HTC Quattro tablet at Mobile World Congress.

Using data provided by Occasional Gamer, WMPowerUser has determined the relative market share of different Windows Phone manufacturers. It not only looks at the overall Windows Phone market but also focuses on how manufacturers are faring with second generation devices. Assuming that these numbers are reflective of the overall market, it appears that Nokia is quickly establishing itself as the dominant player.

While it only has 4% of the overall market, Nokia, with its Lumia 710 and Lumia 800, already owns 45% of the second generation Windows Phone handset space. While HTC still dominates the overall market with a 55% share, its second generation device share is down to 40%. Momentum also seems to be favouring Nokia which is planning a big marketing push in North America over the next few months.

2nd generation Windows Phone device market share - January 2012

Samsung is holding down third both overall and for second generation devices. Its Omnia W and Focus Flash appear to be its best-selling devices.

Along with reports that it sold some 1.3 million Windows Phone handsets in 2011, this is another sign that Nokia’s decision to align with Microsoft was the right one.

HTCThe oft-rumoured quad-core HTC Edge appears to have been renamed ahead of its expected Mobile World Congress debut. PocketNow has learned from “a trusted source” that HTC has taken the unusual step of changing its codename to Endeavor.

No reason was given for the codename change but PocketNow surmises that it might be “to build up some buzz for its products prior to their introduction, but not so far ahead of time that its ability to operate in secrecy is hindered.”

The HTC Endeavor/Edge could be introduced as the HTC Supreme. It is expected to come with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, a 4.7-inch 720p HD “optically laminated” display and a 8.8 millimeters thick unibody design. It could be available as soon as the spring.

Upcoming HTC Ville headed to T-Mobile?

 Posted by Jerome  Comments Off
Jan 152012

The only device HTC unveiled at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show was the HTC Titan II, the first LTE Windows Phone smartphone to be headed to AT&T. More announcements are expected at next month’s Mobile World Congress. Among these is likely to be the HTC Ville. PocketNow has learned that it is likely headed to T-Mobile where it could launch as early as this spring.

Earlier rumours suggest that the HTC Ville will be quite slim (under 8mm). It looks like it will be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and Android 4.0 along with HTC Sense 4.0. It could also pack a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display and an 8MP camera.

Rumoured HTC Ville

PocketNow also expects HTC to unveil HTC Family, a new service that will allow family members to leave other messages and coordinate family events. Geolocation support would also make it easier for family members to know where each is.

HTC is also rumoured to unveil one other smartphone and a quad-core tablet at MWC. The second rumoured smartphone may also be powered by a quad-core processor. Could it be the HTC Edge?

Motorola may not be the only smartphone manufacturer looking to release fewer models in 2012. Digitimes is reporting that HTC, Research in Motion and Sony (as well as the aforementioned Motorola) are all looking to reduce the number of devices they release to focus their marketing efforts more tightly.

Both Apple and Samsung (to a lesser degree) already use such a strategy. Both have been very successful with it. Samsung sold over 10 million Galaxy S II devices in the first six months they were available. Apple iPhone sales in the last quarter alone could top 30 million with the iPhone 4S accounting for the lion share.

The focus on fewer models should also give manufacturers other benefits. Not only should they should be able to achieve higher economies of scale but both the sourcing of raw materials and shipping logistics should be simplified.
