Facebook

It has been quiet on the Facebook smartphone front for a while today but that may be about to change. Rumours surfaced last summer that HTC was working on a Facebook-centric smartphone. They were quickly dismissed by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. A tweet from @LlabTooFeR (the renamed @Football4PDA) today suggests that the HTC Facebook smartphone is not only still coming but also headed to AT&T.

The device is now codenamed MYST_UL but was formerly known as Opera_UL. While the new codename does not feature on a recently leaked HTC codename list, the former does.

If the tweet is accurate, the HTC Facebook smartphone will sport the following specifications:

  • Processor: 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8930
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.1.2
  • Cellular connectivity: Not specified
  • Other connectivity: 802.11 a/b/gn/ Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Display: 4.3-inch HD (1280×720)
  • Input: Dedicated Facebook button
  • Memory: 1GB RAM
  • Storage: 16GB ROM
  • Rear-facing camera: 5MP
  • Front-facing camera: 1.6MP

There are no specific details on availability and pricing at this point.

Is this the upcoming HTC M7?

Curious to know what the oft-rumoured HTC M7 will look like? The usually reliable @evleaks has now given us our first clear look at what looks set to be HTC’s next flagship smartphone. The image reportedly comes from a short animation that shows new users how to install the SIM card into their new device.

Rumoured HTC M7

A couple of details suggest that we are not looking at the final design though. Most telling is that the bezels are not clearly defined. No branding is visible either.

Earlier rumours have suggested that the HTC M7 will come with a 1.7GHz quad-core processor, Google Android Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5.0, a 4.7-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display, and a 13MP camera (possibly with a Sony IMX135 Exmor RS sensor). The report adds that the HTC M7 will come with an IR port located allowing it to function as a universal remote control.

The HTC M7 is expected to be unveiled at MWC 2013 in late February. It could launch only weeks afterwards. It could have broad distribution, including at least two U.S. carriers. There is no word yet on Canadian availability. It could sell for “just north” of US$600 unlocked.

Sprint to offer two Windows Phone 8 smartphones this summer

Sprint

After teasing that Windows Phone 8 devices were coming soon, Sprint earlier this week shed more light on the launch. The company revealed that it would launch with two Windows Phone 8 devices, one from HTC and one from Samsung, sometime this summer.

“Sprint has had a strong relationship with Microsoft for many years so we are excited to reinforce our commitment to the Windows 8 platform by sharing the details and timing for our first Windows Phone 8 smartphones,” said Fared Adib, Sprint senior vice president, product development and operations. “These smartphones combine a robust new operating platform with the benefit of Sprint’s unlimited data plans. There is no doubt these phones will quickly become an extension of your PC experience right in the palm of your hand.”

While Sprint’s press release is light on details about the devices, Sprint’s director of device delivery Ryan Sullivan indicated that they would be new devices. “They’ll be current,” he said. “We’re working for current product launches, and not necessarily to launch on six-month-old hardware.”

Today, Sprint only offers Android, BlackBerry, and iOS devices. Sullivan hinted that Sprint could even offer devices powered by the Firefox and Tizen operating systems in the future.

HTCA number of recent rumours are all suggesting that HTC’s next flagship smartphone will be the HTC M7. Another round of rumours today has painted a fairly complete picture of what we can expect from this device. The latest specification details come courtesy of both @Football4PDA and HTCSource. They align very well with earlier rumours. Here is what we can expect:

  • Processor: 1.7GHz Qualcomm S4 APQ8064
  • Operating system: Google Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5.0
  • Cellular connectivity: GSM/EDGE/HSPA+/LTE
  • Other connectivity: GPS/GLONASS, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Display: 4.7-inch Full HD (1920×1080)
  • Input: Capacitive touchscreen with software buttons
  • Memory: 2GB RAM
  • Storage: 16/32/64GB onboard
  • Rear-facing camera: 13MP possibly with Sony IMX135 Exmor RS sensor
  • Front-facing camera: 2.1MP
  • Battery: 2,300mAh
  • Other: Beats Audio

The specifications may be tweaked a bit before the announcement. For example, it could be updated to Android 4.2 before launch.

The design of the HTC M7 is said to carry a number of same design cues as the Verizon DROID DNA. It will be all black and sport a “very nice looking beveled edge” along the screen.”

Rumours paint a conflicting picture as to when the HTC M7 will be announced. It could happen as early as CES 2013 or at MWC 2013 in late February. HTC is aiming for a first quarter launch. It could be headed to at least two U.S. carriers (Sprint and Verizon) and perhaps all four major ones.

More HTC device codenames revealed?

HTC

HTC recently that it was planning to reduce the number of devices in development to focus on a smaller number of devices that would have a longer shelf life. A leaked list of device codenames now appears to suggest otherwise. In all, 35 codenames have been revealed, suggesting that HTC could be quite busy in 2013 after all:

  • APOLLO_TD
  • CP3DCG
  • CP3DTG
  • CP3DUG
  • DELUXE_R
  • DELUXE_UL
  • DELUXE_TW

  • IMPRESSION_J
  • JET
  • K2_CL
  • K2_WL
  • K2_PLC_CL
  • KNIGHT
  • M7_U
  • M7_WL
  • M7_WLJ
  • M7_WLV
  • M7DCG
  • M7DTG
  • M7DUG

  • MONACO_U
  • MONACO_UL

  • PDLU
  • PRIMOMINIU
  • PULSE_TD PUE_TD
  • QUATTROF
  • QUATTROU
  • VENUS_CL
  • VERDI_LTE

Interestingly, eight variants of the M7, rumoured to be HTC’s next flagship smartphone, appear on the list. It suggests that it will have a worldwide release with different models being prepared for different carriers and markets.

There are some signs that the list may not be quite up to date though. We have seen some of these codenames before. For example, the Quattro was rumoured to be an HTC tablet as far back as late 2011. Others have appeared on older codename lists that leaked. For example, the Jet first surfaced back in 2011. Others are for devices that have been released. For example, the Deluxe is none other than the HTC Butterfly and the K2 was released as the HTC One SV.

The list also has little in common with another codename list that surfaced back in November. Only the Era and Quattro appear on both.

While we may see some of these codenames again, especially with both CES and MWC just around the corner, take it with a grain of salt until we see some corroborating evidence to support it.

Will HTC announce HTC M7 flagship smartphone at CES 2013?

HTC

There is little to go on but a tweet from the usually reliable @Football4PDA indicates that HTC may announce its next flagship device, known so far only its HTC M7 codename, at CES 2013. An earlier rumour suggested that the announcement would instead take place at MWC in late February.

The tweet also suggests that the HTC M7 could come with software buttons rather than hardware ones.

A launch by HTC with the rumoured Sprint and Verizon would give it a head start over other flagship devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S IV and the Sony Xperia Z.

Earlier reports have suggested that the HTC M7 will be powered by a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and Google Android with HTC Sense 5. It will come with a 4.7-inch or 5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) SoLux display, LTE connectivity, and a rear 13MP camera.

HTC working on Windows RT tablets for 2013?

Dec 212012

HTCAfter being rebuffed by Microsoft earlier this year, it now appears that HTC will launch some Windows RT tablets next year. Citing “people familiar with the matter,” Bloomberg reports today that HTC is working on both a 12-inch model as well as a 7-inch one with phone capabilities. Both will be powered by Qualcomm chipsets.

HTC could be among the first to offer a 7-inch Windows RT tablet. It would allow Microsoft and its partners to compete against competing 7-inch tablets such as the Amazon Kindle Fire, Apple iPad mini and Google Nexus 7.

HTC recently confirmed its exit from the U.S. tablet market. It left the door open to a return and it now appears that it could do so in Q3 2013 with its new Windows RT tablets. Could these be the “something unique” HTC has been looking for?

HTC reportedly recently cancelled a large-screen Windows Phone 8 smartphone over concerns that its resolution would not be high enough to compete against competing similarly sized devices.

HTC cuts smartphone development and shipment goals for Q1 2013?

Dec 202012

HTCDespite a number of impressive smartphones, HTC has struggled against the Apple-Samsung juggernaut and seen its market share and sales fall significantly in the last year. HTC’s sales woes do not appear to be limited to its Android devices. The report indicates that sales of Windows Phone 8-based smartphones have also not met expectations. That trend looks to continue in early 2013 even as the company tries to turn its fortunes around.

HTC’s struggles are now having an impact in a number of areas for the company. According to Digitimes, HTC has suspended the development of several new smartphones for 2013. It has also revamped its product roadmap for 2013, likely by reducing the number of models it will offer. HTC has also reduced growth targets for Q1 2013 by half to between 10% and 15% from the original goal of between 20% and 30%.

HTC is expected to unveil its new flagship smartphone, the HTC M7, in early 2013, perhaps at Mobile World Congress.

HTC drops plans for larger display Windows Phone 8 smartphone?

Posted by  Comments Off on HTC drops plans for larger display Windows Phone 8 smartphone?
Dec 172012

HTCHTC looks to have scrapped plans to launch a Windows Phone 8 device with a larger display due to Microsoft’s display resolution rules. According to Bloomberg HTC decided that a device with a large display offering the maximum Windows Phone 8 resolution of 1280 by 768 pixels would not stand up well against competing Android devices offering resolutions as high as Full HD (1920×1080)

HTC is no stranger to large display high resolution display devices having unveiled the Verizon DROID DNA and HTC Butterfly with 5-inch Full HD displays recently. The new Windows Phone 8 device would have been unveiled next year in a bid to compete against Samsung and its own larger display devices (such as the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II).

If the report is accurate, the rumoured HTC Titan III will either come with a smaller display or may not come at all now.

HTC’s large display Windows Phone 8 device may well have been the oft-rumoured Zenith device. If so, it would have sported a 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 42Mbps HSPA+, and the same 8MP camera as the Windows Phone 8X.

HTC currently offers two Windows Phone 8 devices, the Windows Phone 8X by HTC with a 4.3-inch 720p HD super LCD 2 display and the Windows Phone 8S by HTC with a 4-inch WVGA (800×480) display.

First Microsoft Windows Phone 8 OTA update headed to Windows Phone 8X by HTC

Posted by  Comments Off on First Microsoft Windows Phone 8 OTA update headed to Windows Phone 8X by HTC
Dec 112012

Windows Phone 8X by HTCMicrosoft has begun rolling out the first OTA update for Windows Phone 8. Headed to the Windows Phone 8X by HTC [product information], it includes a number of new features, including one that Windows Phone users have been waiting for for some time.

Probably the key new feature added is the ability to keep Wi-Fi active when the screen times out. Before this option, Wi-Fi would be disabled at the same time as the screen going off, switching over to a cellular connection or disconnecting if one was not available.

This Windows Phone 8 update also adds some new SMS features: The ability to create SMS drafts, a ‘select all’ option mass deletions, and the ability to reject calls with a text message.

The update process took about 30 minutes when performed by WPCentral. It took about 10 minutes to download the update and for the device to prepare itself. The update itself took another 10 minutes or so. Five more minutes were taken up by the data migration that wrapped up the process.

The update appears to be rolling out to the international version of the Windows Phone 8X for now. Hopefully the update will soon make its way over to North America (It has certainly not shown up on the 8X we are currently reviewing).

List of HTC devices to be updated to Android Jelly Bean revealed?

Posted by  Comments Off on List of HTC devices to be updated to Android Jelly Bean revealed?
Dec 112012

HTCHTC has taken its time announcing which of its devices it would upgrade to Android Jelly Bean. To date, only the HTC One X and HTC One S have been confirmed. Its last update back in mid-November indicated that it was still deciding which other devices to upgrade. We may now have more information courtesy of the usually reliable @Football4PDA:

Translating codenames, we get the following list of devices:

  • HTC One XL (Evita)
  • Verizon DROID Incredible 4G (Fireball)
  • Sprint HTC EVO 4G (Jewel)
  • HTC One SV (K2)
  • HTC One VX (Totem C2)
  • HTC One S (Ville and Ville C2 variant)
  • HTC J ISW13HT (Valente)

The HTC One X+ (Evitare) also features on the list. Given that it already ships with Android 4.1, this could be an indication that it will be updated to Android 4.2 (which is also known as Jelly Bean).

It remains to be seen if HTC will add more devices to this list (assuming it is legitimate) or if it will limit itself to just these devices. Based on the fact that HTC has already confirmed that it would not upgrade devices with 512MB RAM or less, a number devices have already been eliminated but a number, including the HTC Amaze 4G, remain in limbo for now.

  • Battery: 2,020mAh

Rumours had referred to the HTC Butterfly as the HTC Deluxe or DLX.

While HTC has yet to reveal availability and pricing details, the fact that the HTC Butterfly lacks LTE and comes with dual-band (850/2100MHz) HSPA connectivity makes it unlikely that we will see it in Canada unless a model with different band support is announced later.

HTC working on 2013 flagship smartphone called HTC M7?

Posted by  Comments Off on HTC working on 2013 flagship smartphone called HTC M7?
Dec 052012

HTCWith 2012 wrapping up, attention is turning to what smartphone manufacturers will offer in 2013. The flagship smartphone space looks set to be dominated by devices sporting 5-inch 1080p HD displays. HTC got an early start with the DROID DNA [product information] and HTC J Butterfly [product information] and appears to be building on those with a new device codenamed “M7.”

There is little to go on for the M7’s specifications but HTCSource suggests it will come with a Qualcomm APQ8064 quad-core processor, a 5-inch HD display (likely the same 1080p HD Super LCD3 display as on the DROID DNA), a 13MP camera, and a uni-body aluminum shell. If so, it may be none other than the HTC Deluxe, a device that has been the topic of recent rumours.

According to Focus Taiwan, the HTC M7 could launch as early as March 2013. In preparation, HTC is already working with suppliers to secure enough components for production of between 4 and 5 million HTC M7s in Q1 2013.
