Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Yu Chengdong already confirmed last month that his company would announce its latest flagship smartphone, the Huawei Ascend D2, at CES 2013. Needless to say, Huawei revealed little about the device, saving those details for its upcoming press conference. But specifications and pictures have leaked several times since. Now an advertising billboard near the cabstand line of the Las Vegas Convention Center has revealed the device ahead of its official announcement tomorrow:

Traditionally known for its cheap entry-level devices, Huawei is broadening its device portfolio and looks to want to become a player in the high-end smartphone arena. We saw the first signs of this last year with the Ascend D Quad XL which landed in Canada courtesy of WIND Mobile. Huawei now appears ready to build on that with the Ascend D2.

According to PocketDroid‘s sources, the Huawei Ascend D2 will sell for about ¥3299 (about CA$525).

HuaweiHuawei was among the manufacturers named by Microsoft when it announced Windows Phone 8 last summer. Huawei even indicated that its first smartphone powered by the new OS would launch by the end of the year. We will instead have to wait until early next year for a formal announcement.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Yu Chengdong has confirmed on Chinese-language Weibo that the manufacturer will unveil the Huawei Ascend W1 at CES 2013. Based on earlier rumours, it will be an entry-level device powered a 1.2GHz processor and with a 4-inch WVGA display, 512MB RAM, a 5MP rear camera, a 3MP front camera, and a 2,000mAh battery. It will also have 4GB of onboard storage. The Ascend W1 has also been the topic of leaked images and press shots.

Yu also indicated that the company will reveal a new flagship device called the Ascend D2, likely the successor to last year’s Ascend D quad. The Google translation is very poor but suggests that Ascend D2 might be yet another smartphone with a 5-inch 1080p display.
