Huawei could announce more than two devices at its upcoming MWC 2013 press conference. Rumours so far suggest that the Chinese manufacturer will announce the Ascend P2, possibly the world’s thinnest smartphone, along with the Ascend W2, the thinnest Windows Phone 8 device. Now comes word of a third device, the Huawei Ascend P2 Mini.

As the name suggests, the Ascend P2 Mini appears to be a smaller sibling to the Ascend P2 both in terms of size and specifications. According to leaked details, it will sport a 4-inch HD (1280×720) display, 1GB of RAM, and an 8MP camera.

As for the Huawei Ascend P2, the report suggests that it will come with a 1.8GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V2 processor, a 4.7-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display (we’ve heard rumours of a 4.5- and 5-inch display in the past), a 13MP camera, and a 2,200mAh battery. It adds that it retain physical buttons and will be about 8.5 millimeters thick. If so, it can give up on its claim of world’s thinnest phone. It would also be offered in a variety of colours.

There is no word on availability and pricing. All we know is that the Ascend P2 Mini will sell for less than the Ascend P2.

Samsung and Apple account for half of smartphone market in Q4 2012

Posted by  Comments Off on Samsung and Apple account for half of smartphone market in Q4 2012
Jan 252013

The smartphone market continued to show impressive growth in Q4 2012 with 219.4 million units shipped in the quarter, a growth of 36.4% over the same quarter a year ago. They also accounted for 45.5% of all mobile phone shipments, which themselves topped 1.7 billion units.

Samsung and Apple together now account for 50.8% of the smartphone market (up from a mere 45.5% only a quarter ago). Samsung set new records for number of smartphones shipped in a quarter and in a single year while Apple benefited from strong sales especially in China and the U.S. Up in third for the first time in its history is Huawei. Sony and ZTE held down fourth and fifth respectively with strong growth numbers. Out of the top five are RIM and HTC.

“The high-growth smartphone market, though dominated by Samsung and Apple, still presents ample opportunities for challengers,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “Vendors with unique market advantages, such as lower-cost devices, can rapidly gain market share, especially in emerging markets. A good example is Huawei, which overtook LG as a Top 5 vendor in the overall mobile phone market and passed HTC to become a Top 5 smartphone vendor.”

Vendor 4Q12 Unit Shipments 4Q12 Market Share 4Q11 Unit Shipments 4Q11 Market Share Year-over-year Change
Samsung 63.7 29.0% 36.2 22.5% 76.0%
Apple 47.8 21.8% 37.0 23.0% 29.2%
Huawei 10.8 4.9% 5.7 3.5% 89.5%
Sony 9.8 4.5% 6.3 3.9% 55.6%
ZTE 9.5 4.3% 6.4 4.0% 48.4%
Total 209.4 100% 160.8 100% 36.4%

In the overall mobile phone space for Q4 2012, Samsung continued to hold first place with a 23.0% market share. Nokia held on to second with a 17.9% share, followed by Apple, ZTE and Huawei respectively. LG dropped out of the top five.

It will be interesting to see what 2013 changes will bring. Will we see RIM return to the top five and is there anyone that can take the crown away from Samsung? It certainly looks unlikely at thsi point.

Huawei Ascend P2 image leaked

Huawei has already sent out invitations to its MWC 2013 press conference. The smartphone silhouette on it suggests that the Chinese manufacturer has a few more devices to announce after unveiling the Ascend D2, Ascend Mate, and Ascend W1 last month. Among these is the Ascend P2 which is set to take on the mantle of world’s thinnest smartphone.

Rumoured Huawei Ascend P2

Along with the image, one interesting detail is revealed. The report suggests that the Ascend P2 will come with a 4.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080). Earlier rumours suggested a 5-inch HD (1280×720) IPS display along with a 1.8GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V2 processor, a 13MP AF rear camera and a 3,000mAh battery all neatly put together in a device no thicker than 6.45 millimeters. It still sounds too good to be true!

Huawei is expected to announce the Ascend W2, the thinnest Windows Phone 8 device, alongside the Ascend P2. In terms of specifications, it should be on par with the Nokia Lumia 920 or the Windows Phone 8X by HTC.

MWC 2013: Huawei press conference set for February 24th

After unveiling three devices (the Ascend D2, the Ascend Mate and the Ascend W1) at CES 2013, Huawei appears to be getting ready to announce a few more. Invitations were sent out today for a press conference to take place on February 24th, the day before MWC 2013 officially opens. The outline of a smartphone gives us a good indication of what is on tap,

Huawei press invitation for MWC 2013

As for what device(s) Huawei could announce, there appear to be two candidates if past rumours are any indication. One could be the thinnest Windows Phone 8 device while the second looks to be aiming to simply be the thinnest smartphone in the world. The Ascend W2 (or W3?) would be a new higher-end Windows Phone 8 device sporting a dual-core processor, a 4.5-inch HD (1280×720) display, and an 8MP camera. The Ascend P2 would pick up where its predecessor left off and should be less than 6.45 millimeters thin.

With a month to go before MWC 2013, there is still plenty of opportunity for more details to emerge about these two devices and any other that Huawei still has up its sleeve.

Now an advertising billboard near the cabstand line of the Las Vegas Convention Center has revealed the device ahead of its official announcement tomorrow:

Huawei to unveil Ascend D2 flagship and WP8 Ascend W1 at CES 2013

Dec 172012

HuaweiHuawei was among the manufacturers named by Microsoft when it announced Windows Phone 8 last summer. Huawei even indicated that its first smartphone powered by the new OS would launch by the end of the year. We will instead have to wait until early next year for a formal announcement.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Yu Chengdong has confirmed on Chinese-language Weibo that the manufacturer will unveil the Huawei Ascend W1 at CES 2013. Based on earlier rumours, it will be an entry-level device powered a 1.2GHz processor and with a 4-inch WVGA display, 512MB RAM, a 5MP rear camera, a 3MP front camera, and a 2,000mAh battery. It will also have 4GB of onboard storage. The Ascend W1 has also been the topic of leaked images and press shots.

Yu also indicated that the company will reveal a new flagship device called the Ascend D2, likely the successor to last year’s Ascend D quad. The Google translation is very poor but suggests that Ascend D2 might be yet another smartphone with a 5-inch 1080p display.

Huawei executive confirms upcoming phablet with “giant screen”

HuaweiSamsung effectively created a new device category with the Samsung Galaxy Note, the original “phablet.” Its success with it and its successor, the Samsung Galaxy Note II [product information], has not gone unnoticed and other manufacturers are likely to unveil their own such devices. Back in October, rumours surfaced that Huawei could be among them with its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate. A Huawei executive today appeared to confirm this move.

Without mentioning either the device name or specific screen size, Huawei Senior VP Yu Chengdong confirmed on a microblogging site that Huawei was working on a smartphone with a “giant screen” (assuming Google’s translation is accurate). He added that it would be released in early 2013 and that it would not only outperform the Samsung Galaxy Note II but would also be cheaper.

Assuming that Huawei does release a smartphone with a 6.1-inch display, it remains to be seen how it will fare. The Samsung Galaxy Note and Note II proved that there is a market for larger screened devices but Huawei appears set to test the envelope with a smartphone that may not be much smaller than a 7-inch tablet. Just how big is too big?
