Rogers Communications today announced a new bilateral LTE roaming agreement with carrier 3 Hong Kong. Customers travelling to Hong Kong with a 2600MHz device will be able to roam on LTE speeds while in Hong Kong. The agreement makes Rogers the first carrier in North America and one of the first in the world to offer international LTE roaming to its customers.

“Rogers was the first carrier to launch an LTE network in Canada and today we are adding to our proud history of innovative firsts by being the first carrier in North America to launch LTE roaming,” said Raj Doshi, Rogers Senior Vice President of Products. “We know that Canadians travelling, whether for business or pleasure, want access to their device, email, documents, and the Internet. By offering LTE roaming, our customers can stay connected while travelling at the same blazing fast LTE speeds they experience in Canada on the Rogers wireless network.”

Rogers is planning to launch LTE roaming in additional countries throughout 2013 but did not provide additional details.

Rogers already offers a number of data roaming options. For example, International Data Day Passes start at CA$25 for 5MB.

Public MobilePublic Mobile yesterday announced that it is now offering US roaming to its customers. The rates will be the same as in Canada (CA$0.15 a minute to send or receive a call, free incoming texts and CA$0.15 for each outgoing text).

“Until now, the cost to roam while in the U.S. has been ridiculous,” said Public Mobile CEO, Alek Krstajic. “We are proud to bring Canadians fair prices and great value while they talk and text in the U.S. With the introduction of our 3G Smartphones we also look forward to introducing data roaming in Canada and the U.S. in the coming months,” added Krstajic.

Public Mobile has partnered with Sprint and coverage extends across the Continental US and includes Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Only Alaska and Montana are not included.

Data roaming is not yet available (in Canada or the US) but should be unveiled in the “coming months.”

TELUS

TELUS Mobility today announced that it will lower its roaming voice and data rates by up to 60 per cent starting on June 27th. Customers will also no longer require separate bundles and passes.

“After the launch of our new HSPA+ wireless network in late 2009, TELUS was able to offer our customers a true international roaming capability for the first time, ending Rogers’ monopoly in international roaming for Canadians. We quickly started working with carriers around the world to negotiate reduced roaming rates for our customers and we now want to make it as simple and affordable as possible for our customers to use their smartphones wherever they go, without coming home to a surprise on their bill,” said David Fuller, TELUS Chief Marketing Officer.

As one example, roaming rates when travelling in Western Europe will drop to CA$1.50 per minute (a reduction of up to 50%) for voice and CA$10 per MB (a reduction of 60%) for data.

The new international roaming rates will go into effect on June 27th, covering over 200 countries.
