The Google Nexus 4 is the subject of two new ads, one each from Google and LG. Google’s ad focuses on Photo Sphere, a feature introduced in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. LG’s ad is more encompassing, showing different people using the smartphone for different purposes by using different tools including Photo Sphere, Google Now, Wi-Fi Display, and Android Beam. The latter also features a number of shots of the reflective pattern on the back of the smartphone.

Now, if Google and LG could only do something about those scarce and erratic” supplies and get these in the hands of all the people wanting one…

Dec 112012

LG ElectronicsThe LG Optimus G2, likely the successor to the still new LG Optimus G [product information] may be in line for a larger display than first reported. Rather than a 5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) LCD display, it could sport a larger 5.5-inch Full HD one.

There is no word on additional specification details. A past report indicated that the Optimus G2 would come with a 2.0GHz quad-core MSM8974 Snapdragon S4 Prime processor, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie (which as yet to be formally announced), LTE connectivity, and a camera with backlight prevention technology.

According to the Asia Economic report, the Optimus G2 will be launched within the first half of 2013 to take on the Samsung Galaxy S IV.

1080p display LG E940 for AT&T surfaces on benchmark website

Dec 102012

Remember LG’s rumoured 1080p HD F240K smartphone that surfaced last month. It now appears that a variant may be headed to North American shores as well. The LG E940 has been spotted on the GLBenchmark website. As usual, little is revealed but there are the usual few details that can be gleaned. Among them is the parameter, android.os.Build.PRODUCT, which reads as geefhd_att_us, suggesting that the LG E940 is headed to AT&T.

GLBenchmark results for LG E940

Other details revealed by the test results indicate that the LG E940 will run Android 4.1.2 (although that could still change by the time it is announced) and sport a Full HD (1920×1080) display. While there is no size for the display, we can expect it to be no less than 5-inch like other smartphones sporting a 1080p display. It will also come with an Adreno 320 GPU, suggesting a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC.

With plenty of carrier announcements normally taking place at CES, could we see the LG E940 announced then? With AT&T set to carry it, we could also see it make its way north of the border – Canada needs a smartphone with a 5-inch 1080p display.

Google Nexus 4LG has confirmed what many had predicted: It is struggling to keep up with the demand for the Google Nexus 4 [product information]. Not only did it sell out in minutes on its debut on November 13th but it has remained difficult to find since then. The Google Play Store continues to sell out of it in mere hours (including Canada) wherever it is is made available again.

Asked about the Nexus 4 stock situation, Andy Coughlin, the head of mobile at LG UK, told CNET UK that the phone “had proven extremely popular, and as such retailers have been met with huge demand”. LG’s Korean headquarters added that Google underestimated initial demand for its latest Nexus smartphone, explaining why Google so quickly sold out of its initial supply.

LG is working with Google to address the demand. “We are working closely with Google to ensure that those who wish to purchase a handset are able to do so,” he said.

Neither Google nor LG have given any timelines as to when they expect supply to catch up for demand for the Google Nexus 4. Nor have they provided any specific figures for either the first dale of sales or cumulatively.

LG ElectronicsSuch is the pace in smartphone development these days that a device is barely hitting the market that its successors are already in the works. LG is the latest manufacturer that appears to be getting ready to launch a 1080p display smartphone in early 2013. The LG F240K has been spotted on the GLBenchmark website sporting some increasingly familiar future flagship device specifications.

The LG F240K (a Korean version of the LG F240?) could be very similar to the Verizon DROID DNA [product information] and HTC J Butterfly in two key specifications: A 1920×1080 HD display and a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro with Adreno 320 GPU. It is powered by Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean at this point. That could well be updated to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean by the time it is announced.

Google employee leaves behind LG Nexus 4 at bar

Oct 262012

GoogleWhere have we heard this story? Guy walks into a bar and hours later walks out, leaving behind a prototype smartphone. It’s already happened twice with Apple iPhones and now appears to have repeated itself with a LG Nexus 4.

It all happened at the 500 Club in San Francisco. A bartender found the lost device last month. He thought little of it at first as about 20 phones get left behind every week. But this one went unclaimed. Locked and without SIM card, the bartender had no way to identify who it might belong to. He recognized that the ‘not for sale’ sticker and Google logo on the back made it more unusual as well. Things got interesting when he showed it to someone who recognized it as the yet-to-be-announced LG Nexus 4.

From there, the story involves Google’s security team, a wild goose chase, police in riot gear, lawyers, and offers of free phones in exchange for keeping the story quiet. Read the Wired article for a story that reads like a movie script.

The morale of the story: Unreleased smartphones and bars don’t mix.
