There is some unexpected but good news for Bell Motorola ATRIX HD LTE owners (including Gadgetorama’s own) tonight. The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean upgrade is now rolling out. It’s a pleasant surprise as Motorola’s latest upgrade schedule had indicated that the update would not be begin to roll out until Q1 2013.

Motorola Facebook teaser is not for the DROID RAZR HD

Motorola yesterday kicked off a Facebook teaser campaign asking users to guess what phone it was hinting at. Most of us expected the campaign to culminate in the announcement of a new smartphone with the DROID RAZR HD as the likeliest candidate. Today’s hint rules out the DROID RAZR HD, revealing that the device in question is already on sale in the U.S.:

Guess the Smartphone: I’m really fast! I browse the Web, multitask and power through emails with my 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. And just a note, I’m in market in the U.S. from Motorola already. Which smartphone am I?

As for what device Motorola is teasing us with, it appears that it is none other than the Motorola ATRIX HD which is already offered by AT&T (and coming to Bell soon here in Canada).

August 2012 Motorola device announcement

Looking back at yesterday’s first hint, Motorola never does say that the device is in fact new. Chalk this one up to one of those cases where we saw what we wanted to see! As for the DROID RAZR HD, we’re now back in the dark as to when it will be announced.

Motorola Canada recently announced that Bell Mobility would soon exclusively launch the ATRIX HD LTE as its superphone. Gadgetorama yesterday got an early look at this LTE-enabled device.

As for my own first impressions, I was impressed by the 4.5-inch HD (1280×720) ColourBoost display. It is quite thin (8.4 millimeters) but not quite as thin as the RAZR and the LTE support will ensure some impressive download speeds – a useful feature for Bell’s video services. The video below gives you a good overview of what you can expect (including a good overview of Motorola’s SmartActions):

The Motorola ATRIX HD LTE will be available exclusively in Canada through Bell Mobility later “this summer.” Pricing has not been announced yet.

Motorola ATRIX HDMotorola this week announced the Motorola ATRIX HD for both Bell Mobility in Canada and AT&T in the U.S. Phone Scoop has learned that, unlike other recent Motorola smartphones, the ATRIX HD does not support Motorola’s Webtop software and Lapdock accessories. A company spokesperson explained that the omission was a decision made to keep the price as low as possible:

“Motorola Atrix HD was designed for people who get excited about new technology that is relevant to their lifestyle, but are also price conscious. So we’re offering the experiences and software that this target would be most interested in and still be able to make it affordable.”

While the Lapdock and Webtop concept which includes the Firefox browser as well as access to both phone data and apps is really interesting, the execution and price of the dock has not lived up (yet) to the promise. Motorola recently previewed the next version of Webtop, suggesting that we will see it in future devices.
