If most rumours agree that Samsung will use a dedicated event to unveil its next flagship smartphone, they cannot agree on when this event will take place. According to SamMobile, which has proven reliable in the past, the event will in fact take place on March 15th. Its “trusted insider” adds that the Unpacked event will take place at a “still top-secret” location.

The report adds that event invitations will be sent out when the Mobile World Congress wraps up. At the event, Samsung will unveil the Samsung Galaxy S IV (model GT-I9500) in black and white variants. The Galaxy S IV will then go on sale in early April but not globally. It appears that North America will have to wait until May or June.

Reinforcing the April launch, a number of accessories, including a number of cases and a wireless charging kit, are expected to launch in calendar week 15 which just happens to fall in early April.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV is expected to come with Samsung’s new Exynos 5 Octa processor with Mali-T658 GPU, Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean, a 4.99-inch Full HD (1920×1080) Super AMOLED display, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera and a 2,600mAh battery.

Samsung to unveil Galaxy S IV at dedicated event after MWC 2013?

Samsung

This one should not come as a surprise. Despite some rumours that Samsung will unveil the Samsung Galaxy S IV at MWC 2013, most have suggested instead that Samsung would use a dedicated Unpacked event much as it did last year with the Galaxy S III. You can now add CNET to the list for the latter hypothesis. According to “a person familiar with its launch plans,” Samsung will not make any major announcements at MWC 2013 and will instead hold a separate event for its latest flagship smartphone. This would certainly explain some of its recent announcements such as the Galaxy Express and Galaxy Xcover 2.

Most recently, Samsung used dedicated events to unveil the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II (among others). It’s a growing trend among manufacturers who use such events to give their products as much attention as possible both from the media as well as consumers. BlackBerry did so this week for the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10 and HTC is holding an event on February 19th just days ahead of Mobile World Congress.

Most rumours expect that Samsung’s Galaxy S IV event will take place sometime between March and April.

Samsung aiming to sell 10 million Galaxy S IV smartphones per month?

Samsung

The success of its Galaxy S II and Galaxy III smartphones has set the bar high for the next-generation flagship smartphone. According to Korean website Money Today, the manufacturer has set itself the goal of selling 10 million Galaxy S IV handsets per month, right from its launch.

As a comparison, it took the Samsung 50 days to ship its first ten million Galaxy S III smartphones while the Galaxy S II required five months to do so. Since then, the Galaxy S line has topped sales of 100 million units.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV (or Altius) is expected to come with a 4.99-inch FHD display, a 1.8GHz eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and optional wireless charging. It is expected to be unveiled at a Samsung Unpacked event in either March or April (although some rumours suggest a MWC announcement).

The report also adds that Samsung has a wide range of tablets in development. Aside from the already rumoured new 7-, 8-, and 10.1-inch models, we can expect to see 12-inch and 14-inch tablet models. There is no mention of an ASUS Transformer-like 13.3-inch tablet with optional QWERTY keyboard dock.

Next-generation Samsung Galaxy S smartphone codenamed Altius?

Samsung

We may not yet know the name of Samsung’s next Galaxy S smartphone (although most expect it to be the Galaxy S IV) but we may now have its latest codename. SamMobile reports today that Samsung has changed the codename from “Project J” to “Altius(J)” before adding a few details about the device itself.

The official name of the smartphone may not have been finalized yet. The number 4 is considered unlucky in many Asian countries including Korea. As a result, we could see the device launch under a slightly different name. Samsung apparently went as far as using model number GT-I9500 rather than GT-I9400 to avoid any potential bad luck.

As for new details about the device, the Samsung Galaxy S Altius will support wireless charging but not out of the box. Instead, Samsung will sell a separate wireless charging kit consisting of a separate dock and back cover. The report adds that it will use a slightly larger 2,600mAh battery than the Galaxy S III. The smartphone will be available in black or white (with additional colours likely to follow later if current models are any indication).

The report adds that Samsung is now planning to ship the Altius starting in calendar week 16 (the week of April 14th). It expects Unpacked events to take place either at MWC or sometime in March (although it does not mention the March 4th date again).

Rumour: Samsung Galaxy S IV to be announced on March 4th

A screenshot obtained by SamMobile may have just revealed that Samsung will hold its next Samsung Mobile Unpacked event on March 4th, 2013. The leaked invitation indicates that the event will take place in Pyeongchang, Korea and that the topic will be none other than the Samsung Galaxy S IV.

Rumoured Samsung Galaxy S IV event

If accurate, it’s likely that Samsung would hold additional launch events in other countries as well.

Unfortunately, a closer look at the invitation suggests that this is no more than a fake. Would Samsung really the slogan “You think it was the Galaxy” to introduce its next flagship device? The incomplete sentence with the word “unpacked” not even being capitalized is an additional sign that the screenshot is not legitimate.

While it is possible that Samsung could unveil the Samsung Galaxy S IV at MWC 2013, a specific event for the smartphone is more likely. And if past rumours are any indication, it could happen anytime between now and May 2013.

Did the Samsung Galaxy S IV just get benchmarked?

Whether the Samsung Galaxy S IV is announced at MWC 2013 or somewhat later, it’s likely that Samsung is now wrapping up the development cycle for its next flagship smartphone. The expectation is that it will bear model number GT-I9500 as its predecessors (the number 4 is considered unlucky in many Asian countries including Korea although a GT-I9400 has also been spotted), the Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, and Galaxy S III, bore model numbers GT-I9000, GT-I9100 and GT-I9300 respectively. If the model number is correct, the Samsung Galaxy S IV has just made an appearance on the AnTuTu benchmarking site.

In fact, both the international version above as well as the Korean variant, the SHV-E300S, appear to have been spotted:

The results appear to confirm earlier rumours that the the Galaxy S IV will feature an Exynos 5 Octa processor and the latest version of Android Jelly Bean (at this time as 4.2.2 appears to be in the works). Past rumours add that it will also come with 5-inch FHD AMOLED display, 2GB RAM, a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera.

Samsung display roadmap confirms 5-inch FHD display for Samsung Galaxy S IV?

Rumours that Samsung would unveil either a 4.99-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display or even the Galaxy S IV at CES 2013 did not pan out. But a product roadmap on display at CES 2013 has confirmed that the display in question is coming. Spotted by AnandTech, it shows the evolution of displays over the last couple of years. It culminates with the aforementioned 4.99-inch FHD display with a 440 PPI.

Samsung Display roadmap

Samsung boasts that this new display will have a low power mode and significant power savings (up to 47% with that new mode) over current generation displays.

The roadmap also shows a launch scheduled for Q1 2013. And which device has been rumoured to sport a 5-inch Full HD display for a while now? None other than the Samsung Galaxy S IV.

Could Samsung unveil its new display at MWC 2013 with the Galaxy S IV to have its own launch event afterwards (perhaps with Samsung’s new 8-core Exynos 5 Octa SoC in tow as well)?

That Samsung will release a successor to its very successful Galaxy S III is a near certainty. That it will be known as the Galaxy S IV is also very likely. As for what its specifications will be or when it will be released, that’s where things get murkier. Past rumours have suggested that Samsung could unveil its next flagship smartphone as early as next week’s CES 2013 or in late February at Barcelona’s MWC. Others have pointed to a later release, perhaps in April. Now Samsung Lebanon may have given us our best clue yet in response to a question about availability. It replied that “The Galaxy SIV won’t be released before May 2013.”

Samsung Galaxy S IV availability according to Samsung Lebanon?

It quickly added a clarification later: “What we said is only trivial since all Galaxy S series are released between late April and Early May, yet there’s no way for anyone to know the exact release date.”

Samsung Galaxy S IV availability according to Samsung Lebanon?

Did someone let the cat out of the bag a bit early? Or was it a genuine mistake by someone who is not aware of Samsung’s product roadmap? For the record, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S III last May. A successor a year later is not implausible. We’ll know when Samsung decides to tell us…

Samsung Galaxy S IV to launch with S Pen stylus in April?

Samsung

If the latest rumour out of Korea turns out to be true, the S Pen currently found on the Galaxy Note devices will make its way to the next-generation Galaxy S flagship smartphone. An anonymous Samsung executive allegedly explained that the move is part of the manufacturer’s plan to unify its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note sub-brands. It would also allow Samsung to differentiate its next flagship smartphone from the large number of 5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) competitors that are coming.

Supporting earlier rumours, the report adds that the Samsung Galaxy S IV will come with a 5-inch Full HD AMOLED display. It will be powered by Android Jelly Bean and come with a rear-facing 13MP AF camera and a front-facing 2MP camera. It will be about 9.2 millimeters thick, making it slightly thicker than its predecessor.

On the processor side, things look to be somewhat undecided. It could use a quad-core Samsung Exynos 5440 chipset or an ARM big.LITTLE architecture-based one that would pair an energy efficient Cortex A7 processor with a more powerful Cortex A-15 one for additional power when needed.

The report also indicates that the Samsung Galaxy S IV will launch in April.

No ‘unbreakable glass’ for Samsung Galaxy S IV?

Dec 162012

SamsungRumours earlier this month suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S IV, the successor to the very successful Galaxy S III, would come with a “unbreakable glass” display. Now comes word that this will not be the case. “Flexible screens are still a while off,” a source told The Verge earlier this week. But the source confirmed that it will come with a 1080p display.

As for a release date, the report indicates that it will not take place at CES 2013. MWC in late February has not been ruled out but Samsung could again used a dedicated event as it did for the Galaxy S III last May. Perhaps in April as suggested by earlier this month?

As for rumours of a 6.3-inch Galaxy Note III (perhaps an eight-tenth of an inch larger than the Galaxy Note II), the source indicated that “At some point in the next year, and it could be very late in the year, we might fill in the largest gap in our screen size lineup.” It would appear that those rumours may not be as farfetched as many think…

Samsung Galaxy S IV to sport an unbreakable display?

SamsungThe Samsung Galaxy Note II was to have been the first Samsung device with an unbreakable display. That honour now could instead now fall to the Samsung Galaxy S IV. According to Reuters, the latest smartphone is already in development as “Project J”

The report does not provide any details about this unbreakable display. Could it be Samsung’s own UBP (Unbreakable Plane) display? Or could it be Corning’s upcoming Willow Glass? UBS analyst Nicolas Gaudois indicates it could be a UBP display. Stanford Bernstein analyst Mark Newman goes even further: “Either the Galaxy S IV or S V will have unbreakable and even possibly flexible and foldable displays by 2014.”

Other rumoured specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S IV include a quad-core processor, a larger display offering 441 PPI, likely a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, and a 13MP camera.

Reuters also suggests that the Samsung Galaxy S IV could be out as early as April 2013, about a month earlier than the Galaxy S III’s international release.

Samsung working on three major device projects and quad-core Exynos 5440 SoC?

SamsungThat mobile device manufacturers are constantly developing a next generation of devices goes without saying. So, it should not come as any surprise that Samsung is working on the next round of devices. According to SamMobile, it has at least three major projects currently underway.

The most interesting appears to be “Project J.” It appears to be none other than the next generation of Galaxy S smartphones, including what is likely to be the Galaxy S IV. Few details are available about the next flagship smartphone but it is expected to sport a quad-core processor, the latest version of Android, a 5-inch full HD AMOLED display, and a 13MP camera.

Also on tap is the “new basic Galaxy Note II,” a lower-spec version of the Galaxy Note II [product information]. Intended for Europe, it will retain a large display but will not have S-Pen capabilities and could also lose the Super AMOLED display.

On the tablet side, Samsung may be looking to take on the ASUS Transformer with a new 13.3-inch tablet wtih optional QWERTY keyboard dock. Samsung is still evaluating what operating system to use for this new tablet.

2013 could also see Samsung unveil a quad-core Cortex-A15-based Exynos 5440 SoC. Clock speed and other details remain unknown but it appears to be the quad-core equivalent of the Samsung dual-core Exynos 5250 which powers the Google Nexus 10 [product information].

It looks like Samsung will have an exciting 2013!

Samsung 1080p display production issues to delay Galaxy S IV launch?

Posted by  Comments Off on Samsung 1080p display production issues to delay Galaxy S IV launch?
Nov 212012

SamsungThe launch of the rumoured Samsung Galaxy S IV may not happen as quickly as we all want. Rumours last week suggested that it could launch as early as Q2 2013 but warned that Samsung was facing production challenges. A report today also suggests that Samsung Display is having a hard time ramping up mass production of the display intended for Samsung’s next flagship smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV could launch with a new 4.99-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display. Samsung is looking to unveil the display at CES 2013 but mass production is hampered by a lack of sufficient high-end technology. According to Digitimes, it has turned to 3M for help but challenges remain despite the more advanced LITI technology now used. For some reason, blue-colored materials are especially difficult to work with.

Given that Samsung has yet to announce the Samsung Galaxy S IV, let alone release dates, it remains to be seen how these challenges could affect its plans. At risk are its own internal timelines but how that affects us remains to be seen.

At this time, it would appear that the Samsung Galaxy S III may remain king of Samsung’s smartphone hill for a while longer.

Samsung Galaxy S IV specifications begin to leak?

Posted by  Comments Off on Samsung Galaxy S IV specifications begin to leak?
Nov 202012

SamsungSamsung Galaxy S IV rumours have so far focused for the most part on its 5-inch 1080p HD display. New rumours have now begun to give us a sense of some of the other specifications we can expect from Samsung’s next flagship smartphone.

Among the new details coming to light is that the Samsung Galaxy S IV will be powered by a 2.0GHz quad-core Exynos 5450 SoC (codenamed Adonis) and come with a 13MP camera. The latter may be more likely as Samsung considered it for both the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II before opting for 8MP cameras instead.

While a quad-core Cortex-A15 SoC may be just around the corner, it remains to be seen if Samsung would use it in a smartphone. It would likely deliver impressive performance with battery life a likely tradeoff unless paired with a larger battery.

With CES 2103 and MWC 2013 both coming up early next year, it remains to be seen if Samsung will use either event to unveil the Galaxy S IV or wait a bit longer and give it its own event later.

Samsung to unveil 5-inch 1080p display for upcoming Galaxy S IV at CES 2013?

SamsungThe next generation of flagship smartphones looks set to come with 1080p displays in the 5-inch range. HTC kicked things off with the HTC J Butterfly and Verizon DROID DNA but it will not be alone for long. Sharp already offers such a model in Japan and more devices are on the way. According to Korea’s Asia Economics, Samsung could unveil a 4.99-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display at CES 2013, likely for its upcoming Galaxy S IV.

Samsung’s AMOLED display promises to be thinner and use less power while offering better contrast than similar LCD-based displays. It will offer a comparable pixel density of 441ppi (pixels per inch).

Mass production of the display could start in early 2013. The Google translation of the article is rough but suggests that the process is not without its challenges. If Samsung can work out the kinks, the display will make its way onto the Samsung Galaxy S IV which could be unveiled sometime in Q2 2013 (roughly a year after the Samsung Galaxy S III). Rumours (quickly denied by the company) earlier this fall have already suggested that Samsung could unveil its next Galasy S flagship as early as MWC 2013 with a 5-inch OLED display in tow.
