Samsung sells 50 million Galaxy S and S II and 7 million Galaxy Notes

SamsungOn the heels of the launch of the Galaxy S III (available in Canada on June 20th), Samsung today announced that its predecessors, the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, have together topped sales of 50 million units. The original Galaxy S, available since June 2010, has now sold some 24 million units. Its follow-up, the Galaxy S II has sold 28 million units in 13 months, making it Samsung’s fastest selling device to reach this milestone. Since Samsung’s last sales announcement in February it added an additional 8 million sales.

The Samsung Galaxy S III could well top these impressive numbers. Samsung announced about two weeks ago that pre-orders for its latest Galaxy flagship had topped 9 million.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note phablet also continues to do well. It has now sold over 7 million devices in the 7 months it has been available. It was only two months ago that the Note topped sales of 5 million units.

Samsung shipped some 300 million handsets last year and is aiming to sell 374 million in 2012 with smartphones making up as much as 150 million of that target.

Samsung to review Galaxy S and Tab Android 4.0 decision

SamsungPredictably, Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab users did not react favourably to Samsung’s decision to not update the two devices to Android 4.0. A report by Korean ajnews indicates that the company is now reconsidering its decision due to a strong customer response.

The report suggests that Samsung has not completely changed course but will revisit the issue and see if it can deliver the update. How it would do so remains to be seen but it could follow HTC’s route (when faced with a similar issue with the HTC Desire. In the end, HTC delivered a “development only” update that removed most customizations including several HTC applications.

No word has been given on timelines (assuming Samsung even goes ahead) or whether all regional variants of both devices would be covered.

No Android 4.0 updates for Samsung Galaxy S and Tab

Posted by  Comments Off on No Android 4.0 updates for Samsung Galaxy S and Tab
Dec 232011

SamsungSamsung earlier this week outlined its Android 4.0 update plans. Noticeably absent were the original Galaxy S smartphone and Tab tablet. The company has now confirmed that neither device will be upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It explains that neither device has enough memory to support the ugpraded OS, its TouchWiz interface and other “experience-enhancing” software.

The announcement is bound to displease a few (especially with sales over 10 million units), especially as the Galaxy S smartphone uses the same processor as the Galaxy Nexus S which Samung manufactured for Google and comes with the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor. Samsung explains that the Nexus S only has to support a plain vanilla Android version where as the Galaxy S has a number of add-ons such as the aforementioned TouchWiz, carrier services, video calling software and mobile TV in some markets.

Should there be suficient customer pressure, I wonder if Samsung will do as HTC did earlier this year with the HTC Desire Android 2.3 update.
