Samsung Galaxy S

The Samsung Galaxy S will launch with several US and at least one Canadian carrier. To confuse everyone, it looks like almost every carrier has chosen to rename it: AT&T as the Captivate, T-Mobile and Canada’s Bell Mobility as the Vibrant, and Verizon as the Fascinate. So far, only US Cellular seems inclined to carry it as the Galaxy S (although that could still change).

Samsung Galaxy S specifications:

  • Processor: 1GHz Samsung Cortex A8 Hummingbird
  • Operating system: Google Android 2.1 with Samsung’s Social Hub
  • Connectivity: GSM/HSPA or CDMA/EV-DO depending on carrier
  • Other connectivity: A-GPS, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0
  • Display: 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED touchscreen
  • Input: Virtual QWERTY keyboard with Swype technology
  • Storage: 16GB onboard / microSD cards (up to 16GB)
  • Camera: 5MP with auto-focus, LED flash, and HD video recording/playback
  • Battery: 1500mAh
  • Connectors: 3.5-mm headphone jack
  • Dimensions / Weight: 64.2 by 122.4 by 9.9mm / 118g

To date, only T-Mobile has confirmed pricing and availability details. It will launch the Vibrant on July 21st for US$199.99 with a two-year contract. It will also preload it with The Sims 3 Collector’s Edition game, James Cameron’s Avatar movie and Kindle for Android.

Samsung Wave 2 Pro

Samsung today announced two new bada-powered smartphones, the Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330). The devices are quite similar but the Wave 2 Pro adds a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Both will slot in below the flagship Samsung Wave.

“The Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro are testament to Samsung’s continuing commitment to deliver a smartphone for every lifestyle,” said JK Shin, President and head of the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “I expect significant growth of bada smartphones volume thanks to the launch of mass market targeting Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro. We will continue to invest in our open bada platform and offer a wide range of choices and experiences for consumers.”

Both the Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro will be powered by Samsung’s bada operating system with TouchWiz 3.0 UI. They will come with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity (no 3G), a 3.2-inch display, 80MB of internal memory, A-GPS, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, a microSD reader (supporting cards up to 16GB), and a 3MP camera. They will be available in black, white or pink.

The Samsung Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro will be available starting in August in Russia and South East Asia. There is no word yet on whether they will be released in North America.

The first of the devices I mentioned back on December 28th has landed at CES 2006. Samsung has announced (Korean press release) the SCH-i830 smartphone and the folks at Gizmodo got to play with it a little bit. Grabbed some hands-on time with Samsung’s i830 smartphone—and had trouble putting it down.

This quad-band Windows Mobile 2003 SE phone comes with EVDO, 64MB RAM and 128MB of Flash memory. It has a 2.8-inch QVGA touch-sensitive screen and a slide-out keyboard.

Unlike the Palm 700w, it lacks a camera but is a bit thinner. But like the 700w, it will not come with built-in WiFi.
