Past rumours have suggested that the Sony Yuga (Xperia Z) and the Sony Odin (Xperia X) may be very similar in terms of specifications but very different when it comes to looks. A rumour yesterday indicated that the Xperia X may be a somewhat cheaper variant of the Xperia Z which looks set to become Sony’s next flagship device. The truth may be somewhat different if Vietnamese website SECafe is to be believed.

This latest rumour suggests that the Xperia X will be a dual-SIM version of the Xperia Z. It adds that the Xperia X will be slightly thicker and heavier than the Yuga and will sport a textured or striped pattern on the back. It will also have a small back cover to allow the user to hotswap SIM cards without having to reboot the phone as well as access the microSD card. It will not be dust and waterproof like the Xperia Z.

Most interesting is the suggestion that the front-facing camera will be located on the bottom right of the device. This seems a bit strange at first but Sony may have a reason for placing it in this odd position. The light sensor will be in the upper left.

The device handled by SECafe‘s source was a prototype so there may be some changes before the design is finalized.

Sony is expected to unveil both the Xperia Z and Xperia X early next month at CES 2013.

Sony Mobile CommunicationsSony looks set to unveil two new flagship smartphones in early 2013. Codenamed the Odin (Xperia C650X) and Yuga (Xperia C660X), they are reportedly very similar in terms of specifications with different appearances. New details suggest that this may well be the case. According to a xda-developers thread, the two will have the following dimensions:

  • Yuga: 138.6 x 71 x 8.1 millimeters / 140 grams
  • Odin: 131.6 x 69.7 x 9.8 millimeters / 147 grams

A glance through the discussion thread reveals a few more details: Both will sport 5-inch 1080p HD displays, 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 chipsets (APQ8064, Adreno 320 GPU and MDM9615 baseband chip with LTE support), 2GB RAM, and 13MP Exmor RS rear-facing cameras. The front and back of both devices will apparently be Dragontrail glass (similar to Gorilla Glass). Additionally, the Yuga could be water resistant (IP67 certified?) and come with a 2,400mAh battery. The Odin would also work as an IR remote.

Sony could unveil both at CES 2013 with availability expected in the March/April timeframe. It is possible that only the Odin will make its way to North America with the Yuga to be limited to Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America.

Sony recently boasted that its next flagship devices would be able to compete directly against Apple and Samsung flagship smartphones. Does what you see here suggest to you that it will be able to?

Sony Mobile CommunicationsMore changes appear to be in store for Sony Mobile Communications in 2013. The manufacturer looks set to replace its current ST/MT/LT model number structure with a new five character convention. A new UAProf (User-Agent Profile) reveals not only this new model numbering but also what is likely one of Sony’s 2013 devices. Codenamed ‘Odin,’ it shows up with three model numbers (C6502, C6503 and C6506) in tow.

The UAProf reveals only a few details. The Odin looks set to be powered by Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with Sony’s 10.1.A.0.XXX firmware. The three models appear to be different regional variants of the same device.

With little else to go on, it remains to be seen if this will be Sony’s next flagship device. The fact that Odin is the chief god in Norse mythology may suggest that the Sony Odin could be a new flagship device. Hopefully more information will surface to confirm that in the near future.
