Sony Mobile unveiled both the Sony Xperia Z and the slightly smaller Sony Xperia ZL earlier this week at CES 2013. Sony confirmed that the ZL, which was intended only for select markets, would be coming to Canada. Asked about the Xperia Z, Sony could make no such commitment for the Xperia Z:

Last night, Sharath Muddaiah, the Xperia Z’s Marketing Manager, gave Canadians eyeing the Xperia Z some good news. He confirmed came that both devices would in fact becoming to Canada during a Twitter chat:

Specific availability, carrier and pricing details have not been announced but we now know that Canadians will have a choice of two new Xperia devices in the near future.

Update (1/14/2013): After hearing conflicting stories about the Canadian Xperia Z availability, we reached out Sony Mobile Canada and received the following statement:

Everyone is really excited about the week we’ve had at CES. A global representative made an error regarding Canadian product availability. At this time we can confirm that Canadians will be receiving the Xperia ZL as previously announced, but we have nothing to announce about the Xperia Z availability in Canada at this time. We will share more news on future products as they are confirmed.

You may have to keep your fingers crossed a bit longer if you want to see the Xperia Z in Canada.

Sony will offer a charging dock, aptly called the Charging Dock DK26, for its just announced Sony Xperia Z flagship smartphone. From the pictures, it appears to be a rather straightforward affair. No ports, HDMI or otherwise are visible, leaving the dock to charge and cradle your device. At the right price, it could have its use.

The design takes its cues from the sharp lines of the Xperia Z. It measures 144 by 40 by 30 millimeters and weighs 55.4 grams.

There are no pricing and availability details yet but it’s likely to be available around the same time as the Xperia Z (later this quarter).

Sony has promised something “extraordinary” for CES 2013. Rumours have repeatedly pointed to the company announcing its latest flagship, the Xperia Z (and its smaller Xperia ZL sibling). It now appears that we have confirmation of this announcement tomorrow as someone has snapped the picture below at Sony’s CES booth:

The latest evidence that Sony has two new smartphones up its sleeve comes from none other than its own website. Press shots of the Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL have been located on the site and pretty much confirm that the former is none other than the upcoming Sony Yuga and the latter the Sony Odin. Without further ado, here they are:

The images line up well with earlier rumours. The Sony Xperia XL even seems to have its front-facing camera at the bottom right corner as one rumour suggested. Past rumours have indicated that both will be powered by 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processors and come with 5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) displays, 2GB RAM, and rear 13MP cameras.

Sony is expected to unveil both the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL at next week’s CES 2013.

Sony Xperia X to be dual-SIM version of Xperia Z?

Sony

Past rumours have suggested that the Sony Yuga (Xperia Z) and the Sony Odin (Xperia X) may be very similar in terms of specifications but very different when it comes to looks. A rumour yesterday indicated that the Xperia X may be a somewhat cheaper variant of the Xperia Z which looks set to become Sony’s next flagship device. The truth may be somewhat different if Vietnamese website SECafe is to be believed.

This latest rumour suggests that the Xperia X will be a dual-SIM version of the Xperia Z. It adds that the Xperia X will be slightly thicker and heavier than the Yuga and will sport a textured or striped pattern on the back. It will also have a small back cover to allow the user to hotswap SIM cards without having to reboot the phone as well as access the microSD card. It will not be dust and waterproof like the Xperia Z.

Most interesting is the suggestion that the front-facing camera will be located on the bottom right of the device. This seems a bit strange at first but Sony may have a reason for placing it in this odd position. The light sensor will be in the upper left.

The device handled by SECafe‘s source was a prototype so there may be some changes before the design is finalized.

Sony is expected to unveil both the Xperia Z and Xperia X early next month at CES 2013.

Sony to announce Xperia X and Xperia Z at CES 2013?

Dec 272012

Sony may unveil its next flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z, at the upcoming CES 2013. Previously known under the codename Yuga, it will be Sony’s first 5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) smartphone and its next flagship device.

The Google translation is not easy to read but it appears that Sony will first launch the Xperia Z (bearing model number L36h) in China perhaps as early as mid-January. It will sell for ¥4298 (about CA$685). There also appear to be two variants, the L36i and the L36a, that will be offered in other markets.

Rumoured Sony Xperia Z

Sony could also announce the Sony Xperia X (model L35h), described as a “sister” device with very similar specifications but with a number of differences as well (perhaps as Sony has already done with the Xperia T and Xperia TX). It should sell for somewhat less than the Xperia Z.

The report adds that both the Xperia Z and Xperia X will come with 5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) displays, a quad-core Qualcomm S4 processor, 2GB RAM, a microSD card slot, and a rear 13MP camera.

Sony may unveil three or four smartphones for the first half of the year.
