When Sony completed its acquisition of Ericsson’s share in their joint venture, it announced that its new subsidiary would be known as Sony Mobile Communications. It has now launched a new website called SonyMobile.com and is phasing out the SonyEricsson.com website.

Information is already available for a number of countries. The U.S. features the upcoming Xperia ion while the UK focuses on the upcoming Xperia S. A section for Canada has yet to launch unfortunately.

It also appears that Sony Mobile will use the @SonyXperia Twitter handle but it is not active yet.

This will not come as a huge surprise. Sony Mobile Communications has sent out invitations to a press event on the eve of Mobile World Congress. Fresh from its announcements of the Xperia Ion and Xperia S, we can expect Sony to unveil some new devices at the event.

Sony Mobile press event for MWC 2012

As for what devices Sony could announce, recent leaks have given us a few options. We could see the Xperia P (LT22i Nypon), the Xperia U (ST25i Kumquat) and still unnamed LT21i (Tapioca) andMT27i (Pepper). All have recently surfaced on a leaked 2012 Sony smartphone roadmap with an April release date (except the LT21i Tapioca which has a July launch date).

The theory that Sony could go with a single letter naming convention for some of its 2012 smartphones got another boost today. We already know that the Sony Ericsson LT26i “Nozomi” officially became the Sony Xperia S. The Sony ST25i “Kumquat” also appears set to use a single letter as its model name as the Sony Xperia U. It now looks like Sony LT22i Nypon will be known as the Sony Xperia P.

All three devices are now posted on Postel, the Indonesian Telecoms Regulatory body’s website:

Sony Xperia P?

A couple of pictures of the Sony LT22i Nypon surfaced last week. It is rumoured to be very similar to the Xperia S but with a 1GHz dual-core ST-Ericsson NovaThor U8500 chipset, a 4-inch qHD display, and an 8MP camera.

A Sony smartphone roadmap leaked this week revealed at least a portion of the devices the manufacturer would bring to market in 2012. Among those was the already leaked Sony ST25i ‘Kumquat.’ Now details have emerged about the Sony LT21i ‘Tapioca’ and Sony LT22i ‘Nypon.’

The Sony Tapioca will be an entry-level smartphone with the following specifications:

  • Processor: 800MHz single-core
  • Operating system: Google Android 2.3.7
  • Cellular connectivity: WCDMA
  • Other connectivity: 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Display: 3.2-inch HVGA (320×480)
  • Input: Capacitive touchscreen
  • Memory: 512MB ROM
  • Storage: 4GB onboard
  • Rear-facing camera: 3.2MP

There are few details about the Sony LT22i Nypon but it should come with a bright 1000-nit display which should make it easier to read on sunny days. Based on price, it looks set to be a mid-tier device.

There is no word on whether either of these will make their way to North America.

Sony Tablet SSony has already confirmed that it will upgrade the Sony Tablet S and Tablet P to Android 4.0. Missing until now was a time frame.

The manufacturer yesterday told The Verge that it plans to offer the updates at about the same time that it offers the update to its Xperia smartphone line. This suggests that the update could begin as early as March or April.

One new detail also surfaced. Sony plans to add “some really cool unique bits” to Android 4.0 for its tablets. Exactly what those would be was not revealed though.

Sony EricssonWe may now have an official name to go along with the leaked pictures of the Sony (Ericsson) ST25i ‘Kumquat.’ Posted on the Indonesian Telecoms Regulatory body’s website (a body similar to the U.S.’ FCC) is an entry that suggests it could be known as the Sony Ericsson Xperia U. With Sony acquiring Ericsson’s share in their joint venture, it is likely that the Ericsson portion of the name will be dropped as we have already seen with the Sony Xperia S and Sony Xperia ion.

Sony Xperia U?

If this is in fact the final device name, it would suggest that Sony could be using a single letter theme for some of its 2012 devices (like the Xperia S).

Just days ago, a leaked Sony Mobile Communications roadmap revealed that the Xperia S announced at CES would soon after be followed up by three additional devices. Among those is the Sony Ericsson ST25i ‘Kumquat.’ A picture of it has now surfaced with the Sony Ericsson name. The image still shows it as branded Sony Ericsson but that’s likely to change by the time it is officially announced.

Rumoured Sony Ericsson Kumquat

The Sony Ericsson ST25i ‘Kumquat’ is rumoured to come with a 1GHz dual-core processor, Android a 3.5-inch FWGA (480 x 854) display and a 5MP camera. It also sports the transparent element at the base that defines Sony’s new “Iconic Identity.”

With a launch date as early as April, it is likely that an announcement will be made at next month’s Mobile World Congress.

A leaked document has given us a glimpse at what could be Sony Mobile Communications’ 2012 smartphone roadmap. If accurate, some 12 devices will be launched between March and September. While specific to the Indian market, it should apply to the rest of the world with some small scheduling differences.

Rumoured Sony 2012 smartphone roadmap

A number of devices on the list have already surfaced. The Xperia S was announced at CES. The Pepper (or MT27i) was the topic of earlier rumours and is set for an April release alongside the Kumquat and Nypon.

Another five devices should follow in the summer. Based on price alone, the Sony Hayabusa could be Sony’s summer flagship device. Three more devices would then follow in the past. The Mint I, the priciest device on the list, could be Sony’s flagship device for the holiday season. It’s unclear if the rumoured LT28at could be either the Hayabusa or the Mint I.

All devices listed will apparently run Android.

2012 is shaping up to be a promising year for Sony.

Motorola may not be the only smartphone manufacturer looking to release fewer models in 2012. Digitimes is reporting that HTC, Research in Motion and Sony (as well as the aforementioned Motorola) are all looking to reduce the number of devices they release to focus their marketing efforts more tightly.

Both Apple and Samsung (to a lesser degree) already use such a strategy. Both have been very successful with it. Samsung sold over 10 million Galaxy S II devices in the first six months they were available. Apple iPhone sales in the last quarter alone could top 30 million with the iPhone 4S accounting for the lion share.

The focus on fewer models should also give manufacturers other benefits. Not only should they should be able to achieve higher economies of scale but both the sourcing of raw materials and shipping logistics should be simplified.

Sony EricssonShortly after acquiring Ericsson’s share in their joint venture, Sony announced that future devices would be branded as Sony devices. At CES, the company also announced plans to rebrand its mobile division to Sony Mobile Communications.

Future devices, including the just announced Xperia ion and Xperia S, will be launched under the Sony brand.

Interestingly, Sony Ericsson’s green sphere logo (pictured here) may stay. It appears on the backs of both the Xperia S and Xperia ion. Will it still be there when both hit the street?

The rebranding is expected to be completed by the middle of the year, assuming that Sony’s acquisition clears all the necessary regulatory approvals between now and then.

Sony Tablet SIf you have been eyeing the Sony Tablet S (which will be upgraded to Android 4.0) and it did not show up under the Christmas tree, a price drop in both Canada and the US may be the news you were waiting for to take the plunge. The 16GB version is now available for $399.99 (down from $499.99) and the 32GB one for $499.99 (down from $599.99).

The Sony Store is also offering five free PlayStation games (Hot Shots Golf 2, Jet Moto, Destruction Derby, MediEvil, and Cool Boarders) with each purchase.

Sony is but the latest tablet manufacturer to cut prices but its moves are certainly not as dramatic as what HP did with the HP TouchPad or RIM with the PlayBook.

When Sony Canada first unveiled the Tablet S, it gave Gadgetorama a short demo. Check it out to see it in action.
