Sony today unveiled two tablets at a press event in Tokyo. The two, codenamed S1 and S2, will both use Google Android 3.0 and feature rather unique form factors. The S1 is optimized for rich media entertainment while the S2 is geared at mobile communication and entertainment.

The S1 features an “off-center of gravity design” to improve stability and ease of grip. It will come with a 9.4-inch display.

The S2 features a clamshell design with two 5.5-inch displays which can operate together or independently.

Both tablets will come with Wi-Fi and WAN (3G/4G) support. They will also support Qriocity music and video services and feature PlayStation integration and PlayStation Network compatibility.

Both the S1 and S2 will be available globally in the fall.

Sony is recalling about 100,000 lithium-ion batteries due to overheating problems that can lead to fire and burn hazards for consumers. To date, there have been 19 reports of batteries overheating, including 17 reports of flames/fire (10 resulting in minor property damage) and two incidents where consumers experienced minor burns. The U.S. recall affects about 35,000 batteries but there are another 65,000 batteries affected in other countries.

This is not the first time that Sony has had to recall batteries. Back in 2006, it recalled several million batteries.

Almost a year ago, Sony pulled out of the handheld market everywhere except in Japan. Since that decision, only one new Clié; was released in Japan, the VZ90. Now, Sony has announced that it will pull out of the Japanese PDA market as well. No more Cliés. Instead Sony will consider partnering with others. Two potential partnerships would be with Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications for telecommunication-orientated products and Sony Computer Entertainment for gaming-orientated devices.

Sony’s exit in Japan now leaves only Sharp, Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard to compete in the PDA arena.
